My best tip to flatten panels is to heat the paper from the other side. Usually, the paper bends back then all by itself.

We are on the same page--I have been doing Christmas cards in July/August for years. Also, printing is less expensive and faster in the summer if you go that route. You asked what we used to flatten things. I am a bookbinder, therefore I do not lack for weights in all shapes and sizes, but my newest favorite is an 1800's sidewalk light from England that my sister gave me last year. It is approximately 10" square, 1 1/4" thick and has a very smooth bottom that I weight down many cards at a time. It weighs 10 lbs. Coolest thing ever as well as very useful. They were made to embed in a grid in sidewalks to light basements before electricity. Love your designs and your wonderful smile and humor. Thanks for sharing your skills with us.

True story: I moved to MN in the spring of 1990. I grew up in the PAC NW and thought, "Oh, similar climate probably." The first spring I was here I almost passed out daily from the heat and humidity. Candle sticks literally were melting in my apartment. I had NO money but I went to Sears and bought what was practically the last AC unit in their store, charged in on a credit card, installed it in the window and didn't move for hours. It took me an hour to get the box up the stairs, too. Lol. I had bruises on my body from forcing it up while my boyfriend (now hubby!) was at work. It was a rude awakening to that charming midwestern heat and humidity.

My favorite flattening trick is to place my card or panel between copy paper (to protect it) and then run it through my die cutting machine a few times with no dies. The pressure really helps flatten it out. If possible, I instead run it through my Minc machine. Obviously that won’t work with heat embossing though.

Christmas in July! Lets do it, we've got the time this year don't we! All items are lovely and I can feel the chill in the air. (or is it that my partner turned up the air con?) I REALLY liked the clothespin to hold the item that you are aiming the heat tool towards. I usually have used tweezers, but they heat up as well. The wood pin will not. I have hit the subscribe button!

To flatten things...take two cheap bamboo cutting boards, drill a hole through both boards large enough for a carriage bolt. Then use a carriage bolt with wing nuts on each end and you have an inexpensive book/card press. If you are flattening several layers or cards and worry about glue leakage, use coffee filters to separate them...they also wick up excessive moisture.

I use a heavy book to for flattening; BUT if I need it fast, I run it through my Big Shot, using an embossing folder and the sandwich for it, BUT I put the card on the outside of the folder. The pressure from that stack is pretty effective. Another thing I do for some cards is to emboss them, which flattens them, then I run it through again on the outside of the folder, which removes the embossing but gives it a bit of subtle texture which works nicely for some designs.

When I saw you on your Christmas hat in my email this morning, I thought you were a bit crazy!! But with Covid......why not get an early start? Heaven knows we’re going to need a whack of Christmas cards this year, as we won’t have had the opportunity to see sooooo many of our friends and family!! Your projects are all adorable!!

Yeah, I've never done any Christmas in July stuff but then again, I wasn't a card maker until a few years ago and now, seeing how hard folks work on their handmade cards, it TOTALLY makes sense on why people would get started, ahem, a bit earlier. I also do a digital printed card for my friends and family but I send handmade cards to my crafty friends.

I make close to 70 cards every year. I consider it part of my Christmas present to my loved ones. Hubby always freaks over the postage bill. He has no idea the time and cost into each one. I typically recieve about 5 cards at Christmas, but I will make them as long as I can.

Karla Bostic what our hubby’s don’t know, doesn’t always hurt them!! Just saving them pain and anguish!!! 🤣😂. You’re a wonderful person to brighten the days of so many family and friends.....especially in these days of technology, getting a snail mail card is always a joy.🥰

Thanks Cindy. I made 600 cards for cancer patients last year. That was rough but truly worth it.

I love that card! Although since I only use white envelopes (so far), I think I would make the what a layer to attach to red cardstock. I usually start my Christmas cards in July, so thanks for the idea! And when I need to flatten something, I use one of my son’s over[riced college textbooks that he didn’t bother selling the end of his senior year! It’s so heavy, I don’t have to put it under anything else!

You know, I have done that one, too! But from time to time, depending on how old my plates are… that has left a mark on my card. Although, I have also done the put your card between a folded piece of paper. Do you do that too, to protect from any impressions being left on your card/paper?

Love your cards, Kathy! They may be simple but there is just something about them that makes them stand out! The design, I guess. Just a quick question...I was wondering why you use 2 different bone folders. Thanks!
@czdesign
@czdesign 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, yeah… well, I messed up my Teflon bone folder tip once by using it for something I should not have used it for. So… when I go to make the score, it slips out of the groove. BUT, I love it for pressing the fold because that bone folder does not leave a sheen that can come from the others.

Hey, that’s my hole punch! Also about 30 years old. I also have the thingy that puts in eyelets and it makes a smaller hole (just not as clean). Anyway, thanks for giving me a burning desire to purchase more dies! I promise not to tell my husband who you are. 🤣

Cathy Zielske - just between the plates as if you are die cutting wo the dies- if the plates are well loved, then add card stock to not leave imprint - stay cool!
