Hey guys, GullYY here! Welcome back to another epic Polytopia video! In this video, we take on Chris, a Pro Player for the Krakens team on PolyChampions. What ensues is an epic late game battle, and a good learning experience! I hope you enjoy! Oh, and tell me in the comments what you think of this video format.
PolyChampions explanation: PolyChampions is a team-based competitive league for The Battle of Polytopia. Each team has a division of Junior and Pro players. Pro players demonstrate outstanding skill and understanding of the game; they are the best of the best. Chris is a Pro player for the Krakens team, and was recently elected as team leader as well. So yes, he's a very good player lol.
If you are good at Polytopia or want to get better, definitely consider joining the PolyChampions Discord server. I've gotten a lot better at Polytopia since I joined, and more importantly, I've made a ton of new friends! Invite Link: / discord

I don't have the time to join poly champions but this has to be the best content I've seen from you. As I'm watching the replay I notice stuff right before you comment on it. - Why didn't you preserve that critical city in the early game -> Explains mistake - Woah why did the catapult line go back -> (I haven't finished the video yet (18:55) but I figure it's another bait because he is going for chivalry when you go for your knight push. Makes more sense that he just has bad vision and would rather play deeper defence) you point it out - Why aren't you pressuring that Eastern city?? -> Bad catapult placement. I honestly think after you had knights ready for so long you were just subconsciously concerned with your chain placement - I actually didn't see the micro chain, awesome! Seeing your critical analysis in hindsight is just so much better! Especially against a player that is actually presenting a very hard defense (one that probably would get frustrated trying to break) and I hope to see more content like this! I rage quit after the Diplo Derby (I'm ZaiquiriW) and haven't played in some time but man am I feeling it now. One day... poly champions.

@@sevrothegoblin5212 Hey Zaiquiri! Thanks for the comment! GullYY and I talked at length about this game (as he said), and I'm glad that you got something from it. I noticed you're wondering why I shifted my catapult line back. At that time in the game, I did have enough vision, but I was concerned about the fact that GullYY had, at that point, amassed enough knights to kill one of my giants and chain through my catapults. As I had too many catapults to space them out properly, I needed to make sure that he didn't have the opportunity to go for a chain. Simultaneously, I was hoping that he would send in the giants he was using for ZoC (Zone of Control) in the center to attack my cap, because then I could begin picking them off by having enough angles of attack to use knights. This ended up working quite well.

@@csantoro7738 I was talking with my partner about how baiting him with the initial knight on the right basically proved he would push with his giants and give you an opening (eventually). Honestly just forgot to type the part about you not having vision. Really GG

I think an interesting takeaway that you didn't comment on is how important it is to minmax your economy. Chris had perfect use of forestry throughout the game from what I could see. Every single one of his cities has perfectly gotten to its highest possible level (or had the potential to do so) with monuments accounted for as well, and all access trees were chopped. On your side there were a lot of unchopped trees, leaving you with a lot of unused stars every turn that could've been used in critical situations, and a few cities that could produce an easy giant simply didn't make one. Another potentially big play with chopping you could've made was at 11:30 where you could chop all the trees in the city you're about to lose, getting 2 free stars and ensuring the opponent can only get it to level 2 (which they need roads for as well) and making level 3 only possible with a monument (which he needs for giants). I quite enjoy this replay analysis, and I hope to see more in the future :)
@csantoro7738
@csantoro7738 Жыл бұрын
Hey Justeeni! Great point about minmaxing eco. I did calculate out each giant, and if you want, I'll DM you the replay file on discord you so can see my side. As for the chopping play, yes he absolutely could have done that. It was most likely a tunnel vision mistake, where he perceived the city as lost and thus focused on other parts of the game. I absolutely agree that it would have been an excellent play, even moreso because it would have removed the forests I needed to stop his knights from slipping through.

I like the match review format. Maybe you could let it run through both perspectives? It might be more interesting to see the other person's view on what is happening and what their plan might be. I do like the idea of you commentating on mistakes that you made so we can learn from them, but also I enjoy live commentary a lot more than whatever not-live commentary is called. That's kinda my main issue with this format. Maybe you could do live commentary but add in segments of future you explaining mistakes? I also like the idea of us seeing from both perspectives instead of just one. I think it would be nice if you try out multiple options over the next few videos and see what works for you. It also might be nice for the viewers if you don't just pick one so that we can get some variety. However, it's obviously totally up to you, and pick whatever works for you.
@csantoro7738

One thing that's really difficult about doing live commentary is that usually these games are not played in 1 sitting. This game, in fact, was played over the course of about 1 week, meaning that for GullYY to do live commentary he would have had to sit down and record himself each turn, which is a little bit inconvenient. However, with the new live game format, I'm sure I could set up another game with him if he wants to do a live recording for a video!

Spies are probably the best late game unit. Everyone’s cities are bigger (more daggers) and in a late game attrition fight where everything’s about getting the small placement advantages, a spy is the best way to either launch a surgical strike to take a single city with a lot of force, or to wreak havoc behind lines. defense bonus daggers aren’t chain kill-able by knight at full health, and you can if not take out catapults, you distract them from your giants. Plus you’re damaging your opponents economy. You’d need to be building one or two spies on the regular, but having a couple less catapults or knights is worth it In this game, that northwest city you couldn’t attack, well if you had a spy instead of one of those catapults, you could’ve been threatening to take it. When he attacked your central city with all those units hidden in the clouds, it was basically a more expensive spy surprise attack (and that’s the move after which you resigned) Ok I’m obviously biased, cause spies are my personal favorite strategy, but I’m a decent player, have beaten people ranked considerably higher than me with it, and using spies late game has so far always worked (trying to rush diplomacy early games a different story, don’t recommend unless you’re rushing embassies in games with lots of people)
@csantoro7738
@csantoro7738 Жыл бұрын
Hey Frey! In my experience, you are mostly correct about cloaks. However, there is one problem here, and that is deciding when to go for cloaks. There are generally stages to these kinds of endgames, and most will start with mathematics, which induces chivalry as a response (chivalry is and will probably always be the best counter to catapults). Because of this natural tech progression, which most tribes follow, there is never really a good opportunity prior to knights and catapults to go for Diplomacy, especially in a 1v1 where embassies provide no value. Thus, although cloaks are very effective, this game did not go on long enough for them to be a good investment. Remember, getting the technology would basically take a turn's worth of income, which is simply not feasible in a game state where maxing out on units is pretty much required to maintain pressure.

What are some efficient ways to deal with a giant (either killing, forcing it to retreat or heavily injuring it)? I saw you hitting them with swordmans, when should that be done and when should it not? If you can, can you answer this more general answer: if an attack doesn't kill the enemy, in which situations is that attack good?

Lowering the amount of damage they can return, a giant does more watch damage then defending damage, that's why you typically avoid putting your Giants next to your opponents giants. Also done units just have overall terrible defense but have good amounts of damage (knights, riders, catupults, etc) if you hot then before they attack they will do way less damage later then what you received when you hit them (especially catapults). It's all about making so they can't hit hard back.

19:27 dude, one cloak and Chris would be in so much trouble you throw all units and while you do that you train cloak and put it there, not capture but threat and Chris would get scared and would not leave empty citys and TA-DA you can hit them with knights

How to fight against bardur? I’ve been playing a few games using yadakk and lose to bardur every time. I can’t stop those giants and catapults. My opponent could get a giant on turn 7-9, and I am still using rider to expand.

Bardur is one of the best tribes, so it's normal to get overwhelmed. Not sure about how you could overcome them, I'm not a good player.

Unless you get an excellent spawn, Bardur will usually win out over Yadakk. Because Bardur can level up their capital on turn 0, it enables a technology progression that sets up early giants and quick expansion. Imperius and Kickoo have similar capabilites, although Kickoo is much stronger on maps with more water.

@@mysticcr8tor773 they stopped playing on that account a while back, I think it's been a few months since they logged into that account. Their current account is about 1500 in-game ELO if I remember correctly. There are other top players in the 1900s though, and most of them probably have 1000+ hours in the game.

great game but actually not a fan of this format. i think it lacked the interactivity and live-reaction the og format had. this was probably more of a reflection hindsight thing and probably more educational in terms of strategy
