While out scouting for a location shoot for the movie RV Nomads we head off into the mountains of Southern Colorado and find ourselves on the Otto Mears Toll Road between Bonanza and Salida Colorado where we put the truck to her first true test of her new capabilities as an overlanding vehicle. I enjoyed your video. Your bride was quite apprehensive, and rightfully so. Frankly, I think you were quite fortunate that the trail was just wide enough to accommodate your truck! Strongly urge you to air down your tires as it reduces the chances of punctures as well as improving ride. Good job!

Great video. Informative and entertaining. The intro is classic! My wife and I have had that same conversation (on a different road). It must be much worse for the passenger. Please feel encouraged to share more "truck hikes".

In '97, we rode our Goldwing on the "Road to the Sun" and wife would only go from east to west. There was no way she was riding on the back on the cliff side. No guard rails and a huge drop to the lower valley! I feel your pain Stacy!

We did the Going to the Sun in our F250 back in 2014. Gary’s chomping at the bit to do it again with Elsie. It’s a beautiful drive but yes terrifying at the same time.

When I was 15, my dad drove the family on the going to the sun highway, on the cliff side, in a 76 Dodge Tioga class C rv. I rode in the over cab bunk looking out the window. You know the road is tiny when a motorcycle takes up a whole lane. I'll never forget that!

Love love your truck and adventures. I too have an f150 lifted with a canopy. I was planning on putting some form of a roof and canopy rack but just didnt know what kind to get. After watching your video, it gave me the inspiration to get this kind of set up.. I always worry about getting stuck because of the size of the vehicle. Did you run into any tight issues that made it un passable.. Thank you for sharing!

We went with a BDS 3 inch lift front and back with a leveling kit, Bilstien coil over shocks in front and heavy duty Bilstien shocks in back with Firestone airbags and on board compressor with remote. We went with 35 inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers on 20 inch rims giving us a total lift of 5 to 6 inches.

No offense, (great video), but it would be a bit more enjoyable (for viewers) if you brought some windex and something to clean the windshield when you're videoing through the front windshield. lol Those were some pretty scary "narrow" & steep spots out there, but great fun, huh? Did you meet any other vehicles while off-roading? Enjoying your videos and have subscribed. My husband and I will be selling the house in a few years, hitting the road in an RV and seeing North America - can't wait to be doing it full time like you guys! :-) Until then, we are enjoying living vicariously! ;-)

Wait a minute why can't you film on Forest Service? I film on Forest Service land everyday all day except for when you go into a national park you can't fly a drone that's the only restrictions it's public land it's not owned by the queen anymore

We couldn’t film for the movie we were going to be in. As a youtuber I have no issue filming on forest service land but when you film for something bigger such as a movie the necessary permits are necessary.

If you want out get out but the whimpering and drama is distracting the driver at a critical time so if you can't be quiet and stop with unnecessary noises then its better you get out and walk but know that your walking pace is going to put you miles behind the truck. A driver relies on the passenger in these situations to point out obstacles and be realistic about concerns or potential issues. If you're constantly simpering then you're not a reliable or useful co-pilot.

When Colorado says high clearance that does not mean full size 4 door truck! Some of those roads have switchback that truck could literally not get around!
@RVingtoAlaska
@RVingtoAlaska 6 жыл бұрын
We know the capabilities of our truck and have shocked most of our Jeep friends with what she can handle. She’s not a full-size truck (5 1/2 foot bed) so she handles better than most and trust me if we are in a situation we can’t handle we know how to use reverse. This truck has taken us to some pretty epic locations such as the Crystal Mill so we will keep pushing. That’s why we built her the way we did so she can handle terrain such as this.
@Tatiacha
@Tatiacha 6 жыл бұрын
I was not implying the truck was a long bed. Overconfidence can be incredibly dangerous. The truck can be outfitted awesome and still just be too big. There are roads even a 4 door jeep vs a 2 door jeep is too big. One full-size truck, short bed, regular cab, got into a situation that inches longer there would be no way out of. It took a whole crew of people from the jeeps backed up behind him a couple hours to get him around the corner. Backing up that particular steep grade in that circumstance was not an option. I lived in CO for many years, no matter how capable the vehicle or driver there are places only size matters. Be careful out there!
