UK is a really poor country now with a crust of rich people floating on top. What did you expect? Constant adverts on TV and radio for stuff people cannot afford, resentment builds, and now you are where you are. When government ministers and people like Michelle Mone are filling their vaults with vast sums of cash for nothing, how do you think the public feels about that?

You could, honestly, make a comparison between this shoplifting problem and a lot of journalists, and politicians, now a days. They have no conscience or humaity anymore. Many british journalists don't care if they are defaming someone's character, especially Prince Harry, so long as they are making money. Politicians are the same. So i guess it's becoming a societal problem. It's such a shame that there are fewer consequences to be found. That's why I love your show. You are honest and witty. You point out hard truths to people and you call out their lies. You promote people to use their consciences. We need more people like you. More channels like this one. Thank you. 😊 👍👍

Is it really too hard to understand that currently a generation is growing up that sees day-in day-out that there are no consequences for your criminal behaviour if you're just rich and powerrful enough? That's the world we created for them, that's the social role models we are setting.

Working in food retail for 3 yrs, I can tell you the following: 1) It's on the increase from All walks of life 2) Almost 99% of people we catch just get the items taken off them and told to leave - ZERO reports to the police or EVEN the store head office! 3) More and more people who look like your granny, grandad, mum & dad are trying to take without paying. 4) We have people who try to nick EXACTLY the same thing every time they come in the store. We have names for them... 'Spam man', 'beef lady', lamb woman... 5) and finally - the violence is on the increase! At sone time, when I was young, no one EVER ever hit someone working in a food store - trust me - they do now!

I have often been thimkimg about this when Brexit been discussed and the exceptionalism that I feel i see in many areas. This will never be fixed without correcring the description. I think this applies to many former colonial states but UK is so affected in tne society and in someway tbe old description legitimate it today.

look at the sorry state of affairs in san fran. not only do they NOT prosecute for thefts under 99.99, but if a shop keeper persists in calling 911 for what are now considered 'petty' thefts, the police are threatening the shopkeepers with charges on the grouns that they are 'wasting' police time. this new attitude to 'crime' is wiping out the small to middle size business in areas of usa, and some larger businesses are refusing to service certain areas. bad state of affairs.

I've worked on retail nearly 20 years and I cannot believe how bad the shoplifting has gotten, and there's nothing we can do. It's so frustrating. I've been threatened on multiple occasions by regular shoplifters with needles and stuff, and when they get arrested, they're out the same day! It all feels so absolutely pointless, and makes me wonder why we bother at all. We may as well just stand outside with signs that say "please, come steal our stuff!" 😞

Piggly Wiggly was America's first self-service grocery store founded in 1916. At this rate stores may have to go back to keeping everything behind the counter. Grocery stores in America are moving out of areas when shoplifting rates make the operation unprofitable resulting in 'food deserts'.

*Absolutely love* how articulate James is, especially when smacking down Right wing nonsense. Here in America, we similarly have seen a dramatic rise in organized shop lifting. Of course... OF COURSE the Right wing is beating the drum of "liberal policies" being the cause just like the guy who wrote in, who James so satisfyingly smacked down with the "13 yrs of Tory rule" line! 😁😁 The prob is we haven't had sole control by conservatives so they're able to convince "normies"(ppl who don't pay close attention to politics) that its Lefty policies even though Ruby Red Republican states here have cities with higher rates of crime.

I would love for rehabilitation to be more focused on so that when they are released they aren’t at risk of reoffending. Win for us, win for the prison system, win for taxpayers and win for the shop lifter. Win for society at large. Just locking up people for years over and over and over again doesn’t help anyone.

As a musician, I have given up touring in Europe post Brexit due to the additional costs of visas, work permits, carnies and taxes on merchandise. Thanks England! It might be OK for pop musos who are as rich as Roger Daltrey and can attract huge audiences but for those of us who perform on the cultural, traditional circuits, it is no longer financially viable. Of course bands toured in Europe before 1974 but not many and for the non famous bands, the pay and conditions were not great (think of the Beatles accommodations in Hamburg).

How 'as a country' were we not ALSO key to ending Slavery, and not just here in the UK? I'm always intrigued as to how the whole 'sins of the father' stuff is considered justice, even biblically. US slavery ended over 150 years ago. Five generations have come and gone since then. Most of us are fully supportive of helping the chronically impoverished in our current society, using current means of assistance. But to turn focus back to the Victorian era to try to determine beneficiaries and victims? Absurd. And by the way many families in the south were bankrupt by the end of the war as the confederate government took everyone’s’ savings to finance their campaign. Most families in the south received pardons signed by President Lincoln for having owned slaves and fought on the side of the south. Are those pardons abandoned, rescinded, cancelled?

I have often watched the short bits of James show and love the way he presents. As for the shop lifting I think the UK is liveing in the last days of its empire. I was born in the UK just after WW2. and left 26 years later. The negative changes in the country I grew up in are excelerating, and all the politisions are just hoping it will last till they collect their pensions and head for the coast. I am not sure what the solution is, but I don't see how more growth and the introduction of AI is going to help.

Interesting story about shop lifting. Here in the US we have the same problem…but I remember being in J-Burg in 2002 & EVERY store was locked & bared. If you wanted to come in you would have to wait until the shopkeeper opened the door. Where I previously lived I saw tweakers stealing needles from the bins at my local Farm store. When I reported it they said the same thing….they know it’s happening but don’t try to stop it. And farmers need to be able to buy the needles so they have to stock them w/o being under lock & key. A world gone crazy.

How much does rent cost? How much does it cost to buy a home? Electric bills? Petrol? Weekly groceries? How many shops are understaffed and underpaid staff? What are the employment opportunities for youths? What economic policies have been implemented in the past 5 years that have benefited the middle or working class? This is the same exact story told from the same perspective of “nobody is doing anything about it” and we need more policing and harsher penalties for these “gangs”. How low have we sunk that the answers to austerity policies and tax cuts for the rich and their companies is more police. Same arguments and solution American has been pushing.

well james, when they make you pay 60.00 to travel ten miles to where you're going, in the name of 'environmental legislations', OR, you can travel 39 miles, toll free to get to the same destination, WHERE ON EARTH IS THE ENVIRONMENTAL GAIN?

It's not a poverty thing. In my experience most of the shopkeepers and service personnel who complain about shoplifting would be absolutely mortified if they saw someone shoplifting basic essentials, and would not classify it the same way. It's one of those "I didn't see anything" moments compared to "I saw you, but I can't do anything about it." which is far more the norm.

I absolutely agree with this. A lot of the stuff that's stolen from my store are things like big packs of washing tablets or Yankee candles. They're only stealing those things to feed addictions. It's really sad.

@@stephaniejohnson229 notice noone has a problem with the rich, even if they are addicts as long as they can afford their drug, luxury rehab, etc. its not addiction, it's poverty. i was an addict for 10 years (6 years clean now) yet i never stole. though i did know some who did. and NONE of them liked having to do it. Poverty is the mother of all social ills.

also the reason people don't steal bare essentials is also cos it is easier to steal a small expensive item and then use the money from selling it to buy essentials than it is to try and steal a trolley full of a weeks shopping.

Once all and every slap become a child abuse, parents stopped having a way to keep kids in line. Then what the kids did stopped being a shame on the parents. Put all of it together and you get kids that can do what they want and nothing will happen, not even at home. Now let those kids grow up and now you have adults the behave the same way.

I think there is a balance between slapping kids and having zero consequences. After all, shoplifting was still a thing even when kids were slapped. It is possible to teach kids right and wrong and instil discipline without resorting to physically striking kids. I managed it with my kids.

the class division and and poverty in a country with huge amounts of wealth held by a few are the main issues. honestly, it don't even matter how far back the generational wealth goes. until we come together and accept that we are ALL the inheritors of ALL is society's wealth, and that no individual can ever create wealth on his own and thus the wealth belongs equally to all. we will continue having these problems until a fairer redistribution happens. which i don't see ever happening since even or labour party is now just a tory with a red rosette on. and our left media are neo-liberal mouthpieces. yes even JOB unfortunately. i was disappointed by how softball he was in his interview with Keir Starmer Kid Starver)

Proud to say I regularly may ‘shoplift’. Only from supermarkets/ big chains, wouldnt steal from smaller corner shop types. I think it is a slightly different problem to the one being described, as shoplifting from supermarkets is usually through the use of self service checkouts. Also worked in retail recently and none of the work to keep an eye in shoplifters is really part of the job anymore. Centre security can’t do anything, police can’t/won’t do anything unless it’s a significant amount, and it isn’t in any retail contracts to do any theft prevention.
