“Ignore the chords” 🤣 That reminds me of the best advice my HS band teacher gave me when trying to be all Abersoldesque: “This time just play garbage” and that was so liberating!

Absolutely! When you realize that you don't HAVE to play what the chords are telling your it can help you start to think more about your phrases. The idea with that line of thinking is that you return to the tonality that the song is in (or you just stay there the entire time). Sounds like you had a great teacher!

Thanks for this video, Steve. Rhythm changes have always been my achilles heel in improvisation, so I think this is a good time for me to start changing that. I'm bookmarking it so I can keep coming back to it later.

Hey SK: I love the great ideas here. Thanks! I would like to point out that the audio on your videos seems messed up: kinda thin and distorted? I’ve checked out a couple of them with the same issue. I’d love to be able to hear these great ideas more clearly. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Rhythm Changes have always been a challenge for me so it’s great to get some hints on "cracking the code", lol.

Thanks Mister Patrick! The audio at the beginning of the clip is strange because I have a flanger effect on the sax - I was just having a little fun with that one :) As far as the other videos, I am not sure what you might be hearing there. I record these with a USB studio mic and the audio quality is fine on my end from what I can tell. Not every video is perfect but it should be pretty clear. Can you provide some more examples of what you are talking about? And my pleasure - enjoy the process. There's a lot to work on with this progression but its all worth it :)
