I was in grade 6 when I was introduced to my idol. It was his STAR Margarine slam dunk commercial. From then on, I followed him on his Swift days to Sunkist where he won his 1995 MVP, PopCola then traded to Ginebra (was never a kabarangay but because of him I became one). Mapa Fedex, Redbull, TnT I was cheering for him. Mabuhay po kayo idol!

Nakakahinayang na kapag may mga "punchline answers" na si Mayor Vergel, eh biglang nagla-lag. Pero mas nakakahinayang ang missed opportunity for a 3rd grand slam in PBA history for Sunkist, na napunta sa Alaska instead the next year. Although I don't follow the PBA that 1995 Governor's Cup, that story or issue flies around in the radar. Word is out of sudden contractual issues with their import Steven Smith that led to his poor performance. Sir Vergel was quoted "pagod lang ako" in a tabloid on his own slump. Sunkist had Alaska's numbers as the latter being the consecutive bridesmaid. Sayang lang at "no comment" pa rin si sir Vergel sa kuwentong iyon 25 years later. Yoyoy Villamin trading for Alvin Teng would be a factor. And yeah, hindi pa ganun kauso ang small ball (or two skilled swingmen playing together) concept sa PBA that time, although pinagsasabay ni Coach Tim sina Jeff Cariaso at Jolas. Bakit hindi ginagaya ni coach Derrick Pumaren? Puede rin that the team had a championship hangover in 1995. Or read between the lines in this interview, sir Vergel prefers a new coach. Kaya nga when RFM franchise traded Kenneth Duremdes to Alaska (1997 Gov's Cup), para syang nakawala sa koral. Vergel said he doesn't mind playing along with Kenneth. I guess he's sincere. Or coach Derrick would be too reluctant or stubborn to go to that plan (mapanood nga ang episode na siya naman ang guest).
