An Evening Fly Fishing for the Wild Brown Trout in Devon

My fly fishing has been restricted lately, mainly by the weather not being ideal and also just trying to find the time. I'm nipping down to the river to snatch a few hours when I can, I'm not finding it easy but it such a beautiful place to be.

Couldn't agree more. All of our rain fed rivers are in need of rain. I was out last week. Plenty moving but all fish came short to the fly. I tried various patterns but to no avail. And the bright sunshine never helps. Still enjoy the videos all the same. Great that you share your experiences

The fish lie over on the right bank looking upstream, very few are near me apart from the Grayling but I don't mind missing them.

It seems most are saying the same, only really getting rises around 9 onwards. I found this to be the case on my last trip. Thanks for watching and for saying hi

Thanks for sharing, this time of year from 9 until dark is magic time! I put kids to bed and jump to my wee river. Im still trying to get over the fish I hooked last night, would have been a PB but at least I seen the horse!!! Ahh well.. keep it up! Thanks 👍

well done mate. i fished the Dorset Stour at Wimborne close to me. Had 25 Paddleboarders through my swim. No regard for nature sadly this is the future. nice fish by the way.

Thanks Brian. I’m fortunate that on my river we don’t get other users, just dog walkers. The canal is a different matter though. It means we get an audience when they see a big pike with big teeth!

Lovely bit of river that you’re on. Unfortunately I’m in the wrong postcode 😕 for that part of the river. Good little film tho’ and the drone adds a good flavour. 🙂

Nicely done Paul, yes it's tricky at the moment! I managed some fish off the Yeo last night with a small Bwo spinner but I had to wait until 9pm for my first rise. Like the drone footage, the Exe is bigger at Tiverton than I realised, I did fish it years ago at Thorverton but I don't remember it being so wide. Rain forecast for Saturday/Sunday so maybe things will improve?

Hi Chris, the river does look a bigger on the drone footage even to me, it’s funny how a different perspective changes the scale. Hopefully the rain will help, the Exe does normally improve after some rain, fingers crossed it helps the Yeo too. Thanks for watching

Excellent film, very professional ! at least you broke the blank, I think in those conditions I'd be setting out at 8.30 pm and fishing till 10.30 0r later. is it possible the trout you thought you saw in the slack was chasing minnows? I've cut a fly line before on mussel shells in an estuary! pray for rain......👍🤣

You might be right about the trout in the slack water, it was full of small fry. I’ve also been out late a couple of evenings now and it’s made a difference, I’m just not very good at watching the clock until 8.30pm…. Thanks for watching

Hi Paul, smashing video and a nice trout, our rivers in Wales need water as well and not much rising most decent size fish are in the deep water and do get caught on nymphs but I am a dry fly lover so not really into that. cheers Mike

Hi Mike. I’m with you, I only fish the dry fly as I just prefer the sight of my fly being taken. Fingers crossed that the rain die this weekend will help the river, although it won’t be great for my barbecue plans! Thanks for watching

Hi Bob, it’s the Tiverton Fly Fishing Association but you need to live within a 7 mile radius to join. However there are other local clubs without the distance restriction on the River Exe

Another great video Paul. I have a recommendation for dry fly line john norris £14.99 I used it this year with my agility 2 it cast effortlessly really good have you ever had any problems with sections of your agility rods snapping mine snapped the second from the end while playing a 9inch brownie?

Hi Luke. I’ve just bought two new Maxcatch lines for £10.50 each, I’ll take a look at the John Norris line. My first 10 foot Agility snapped at the join of the top section. I put that down to my abuse as I’m not very gentle with my kit but maybe it’s a manufacturing defect. If it breaks again I’ll probably get a Maxcatch rod. Bit of advise, I know you want to get on and catch for the camera, but in a pool that calm your wading is far too noisy, you have to creep up on wild trout, think Gurkha or Commando not Brigade of Guards , If necessary time lapse the wading , if you worry the viewers lack patience. Round about 30 to 40 years the fly fishing apprenticeship starts to pay off. Good luck.

Making far to much noise especially in the water... sit for 10 mins watch... fish move but be stealth... from my angle it looks like you'd scare anything in there... get down more
