Love this ! 1). We need to treat the people who “work with their hands” with the same respect as we afford to professionals who “work with their heads”. 2). We always had the capacity to cut child poverty in half. We just chose to do it.

The issue with Black Americans is not that they didn't receive help after slavery ended but that they were oppressed, terrorized, and returned to slavery under a different system. Just think a slave's soul purpose was to work from birth to death which means they knew how to do ALL that was needed to not only sustain themselves but to be prosperous. They could farm, they were blacksmiths, ranch-hands, cooks, medical assistants, you name it. So to say they couldn't be self sufficient is false. All they needed was a place to grow. Every immigrant coming to America was given the freedom to flourish. 40 acres and a mule is a small price to pay for 200 years of labor, even indentured servants got a few acres after 7 years of unpaid labor. Anyway, I'm a big fan of GPS. Fareed Zakaria is wonderful. He enlightens and inspires me more than any other journalists I know.

Impressed by Fareed's knowledge and insight in such a vast range of topics. He brings them together and integrates them to understand the overall picture and then uses them to draw learning takeaways. This is not easy. I agree 100% that this pandemic has given us a chance to look at life and priorities in a different light.

Thank you for his! Wonderful conversation. Little LBJ story. I met him when I was in Girl Scouts, maybe 1957or 1958. Our troupe, on an outing to Washington, DC (from Maryland) took the little underground train between the capital and the Senate offices (?). As we got off, LBJ walked up to go in. ''Oh, girls, our leader gushed loudly, this is Senator Johnson, a very important man in our government!'' He heard, grinned, and shock hands with each of us! We were about 11 years old. Since then, I connected that grin and handshake--and the important good works he achieved as president with the pleasant awe I felt then!

It's surprising that Fareed didn't anticipate the resistance of mask wearing in western democracy where personal freedom is held as the highest priority. He also didn't understand Eastern culture where mask wearing has been around for hundreds of years and communal responsibility is the highest priority. In fact people in East Asia immediately put on masks without the government asking them to do so. Self reliance is the virtue in East Asian culture. Democracy by its nature is chaotic and the US constitution was purposely written to prevent centralization of authority. It's no wonder that western democracy fails to protect its citizens in this regard.

Spot on. The rise of the quaternary sector (content producers) has made primary and secondary sector workers feel side-lined. An example of this is the hostility towards Hollywood. The GOP represents the farm owners - the farm workers follow them.
