Every time I hear Stephen Fry speak I am enthralled. The way he has with words is so akin to Wilde, and yet so modern that I am always in awe.

Does he really do these shows, just walk up to stage and talk for an hour, in different venues around the world without a pre-written script and different subjects every time? Remarkable man!

Him and I share two things in common. The first is that we both spent time in libraries while other boys played on the field and the second is that we both had a moment where we realized that language can have both beauty and power.

The way he is talking about language and music makes me wish I could meet him at least once to tell him that he is not only my favourite person to listen to when it is about language and linguistics but also my favourite musician. Even though he says he can't sing or dance. The way Stephen Fry uses language is - as people say - music to my ears.

I'm not sure about the greatest thinker. But he certainly is the most multi-talented and engaging person of our time. Given his level of intellect, he should really be an arrogant shit - but, of course, he's not. That, combined with his searing honesty and humour, is why everyone seems to love him. And rightly so.

John Craske, where did it begin that with intelligence of a certain level came arrogance by default?

Stephen fry is amazing! He would also make a very good preacher - the way he talks about the beauty of literature and its ability to touch out lives is how many people feel about God.

I definitely enjoyed the plays more than Dorian Gray - I'm really drawn in by the wit and colour of the plays, like most people. Must have been amazing to have had a convo with or to even have met Wilde but I think a difference between WIlde and Fry is that Wilde didn't put all his art into his life, which he claimed to have done, but held some back for his works. I do like Fry and find him interesting but I'm still waiting for that killer novel or poem or something.

I didn’t realize that I was gay until I was about to turn 18, and my mother and father were the first people I told. I can understand where Steven is coming from when he was afraid to divulge to his own mother about his sexual orientation, even though he wasn’t expecting his mother to have known it before he died, but I was pretty sure when I divulged it to my own parents they would not condemn me. What immediately struck me as funny at the beginning of this video is how he brings up the delineation between the Dutch who refer to their home as “the Netherlands“, and the rest of the world population whom refers to it as “Holland“. I used to have a friend and neighbor who was a Dutch immigrant named Joost Van Berge that referred to his mother country as “Holland“ instead of “the Netherlands”.

You didn't enjoy Dorian Gray? It's basically a Victorian update of the Greek idea of platonic love between two males. Wilde was one of the most intelligent classicists of his day. Didn't he get a double starred first at Oxford?
@Bastiat90
@Bastiat90 12 жыл бұрын
Really? For me, the plays were always second fiddle to the novel: I believe it to be his magnum opus, but to each his own. One man's rubbish is another man's treasure and all that. I think Wilde lived the life of his work: decadence, sex, drugs etc. A rock star if you will, like Mozart. I think he lives vicariously through Lord Henry Wooton.

yeah I see now this 3rd party stepped in and threw all these insults at you, the original guy probably isn't aware he made all these great waves. Anyway, as Wilde would say, 'If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you'

Now, Oscar Wilde was a true genius. Far more interesting and profound than Fry. The Picture of Dorian Gray is perhaps the pinnacle of Victorian literature. Every page contains some beautiful aphorism.
