Great video and exercise idea. I find a bit overwhelming the initial part of the lesson with all the different chord types. To start with I would stick to the basic most common chord types (maj7, min7, 7, m7b5, maj6, min6) that we find in most standards. Thanks Matt!!

Thanks for this video. At some point you start referring to 5 starting notes. I missed how you arrived at 5. I would have expected 4 because these are 7th chords. Thanks again for all your great videos!

Thanks for watching! When I say "all 5 of these notes" I mean the 5 *starting* notes: E, F, F#, G, G#

Matt, just thinking outside the box here... seems like this exercise could be simplified to using just triads, although jumps might be a bit much in some cases. this would significantly reduce the types of options to consider since maj7 and dom 7 triads are the same for a triad for example. so might just be 4-5 types of triads to consider vs ~20 types of 7th chords types to consider. of course, using full 7th chords would be best and sound much better, but starting with just triads might be cool first step. really terrific exercise!!

This is exactly what I practice. All possible triads combo/inversions from the low E up chromatically up to the 12 fret

I just tried it over Out of Nowhere, and it seems to work well, especially if i also allow myself to use A on the E string.
