King Creole is directed by Michael Curtiz, who directed Casablanca. After production ended. Elvis said "now I know what a real director is like." Nancy Sinatra is the only co-star other than Ann-Margret to have her own songs in an Elvis movie, so yes, she sings. And thanks for using your experience in Indian encampments to inform the reviews.

For his movies in the 1960s my favorite is "Follow That Dream." A close second is "Wild In The Country." But Gladys Presley didn't die just before the filming of the latter. She passed away three years prior. The character of Wayne in "Loving You" was played by Ken Becker. He played the same kind of role in three other Elvis films. But in "Loving You" he was 26 years old --just four years older than Elvis --certainly not a 38 year old. The yoga scene in "East Come --Easy Go" was detestable to Elvis. He flew into a rage in his trailer afterwards. When he was asked to do "Old MacDonald's Farm" --he said something to the effect of "Has it really come down to this?" The song "Hey, Hey, Hey" was one of his worst movie songs. A runner-up would be "Dominick" which he was supposed to be singing to a bull. Elvis objected, so he sang the song to two girls which would have been puzzling to any viewer.

This was a fun little ride. Let me preface this by saying that I like Elvis movies because I like Elvis. My personal favorites are "Follow That Dream" and "It Happened at the World's Fair," and I don't think "Girl Happy" gets enough credit for being what it is -- an escapist Elvis farce. (But I don't think I've seen it in the 20 years since I've been married, so there's that.) I haven't watched some of the early dramas with an adult eye in a long time, but I have heard that despite its low Rotten Tomatoes score, "Change of Habit" has gotten more positive critical reviews as time has passed, in part because it was one of the first movies that tackled autism even if what we know now isn't what we knew then; there were some pretty heavy themes going on there, and the soundtrack is quite good. I've always thought that "Tickle Me" was the worst movie, but growing up it was also one that I had seen least. The movie that is a struggle to watch is "Double Trouble"; the whole Weir Brothers thing turns me off. Other thoughts: Although people want to rail on Elvis, there were some decent directors and producers who should probably shoulder some blame. "Flaming Star" was directed by Don Siegel, and Hal Wallis made Oscar-winning movies with the receipts of his Elvis movies. After a certain point, the scripts never rose to the talent of the star. Story I heard was that "Charro" was supposed to be a much more gritty western, and Elvis and "someone" were talking about how the script had changed so much and Elvis asked why? "They wanted an Elvis movie," he responded. To which Elvis said, "Screw 'em, let's just get this thing over with." BTW, Elvis bashing the dude's head against the jail cell bars is probably my favorite Elvis scene; it makes me giggle when he gives the guy a headache. You can find Raquel Welch taking a shower. I think I remember seeing Terri Garr, too, but don't remember where. The movies aren't 70 years old (yet). C'mon Dudes, you're teachers, and some of us are holding on to our youth like there's no tomorrow. Like someone else mentioned, you have to understand that these were made in a different time, so the lens you look at them with has to allow for that. These were largely '60s beach pictures and Frankie Avalon could have just as easily been the star. Elvis will typically be criticized for not being a great actor, but Frank Sinatra wouldn't have made those roles any better. The thing that bothers me is that the mid- to late-60s movies have tainted Elvis' legacy in Hollywood in much the same way the last two years of Elvis' life tainted his concert legacy and made him more of a punchline than he deserved. "Vegas Elvis" was pretty awesome until he became so physically miserable and his health and appearance went south. By the way, there was nothing regrettable about your list. It had to be done, and you guys treated it fairly. Keep up the good work.
@nenabunena2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I'm not from the US, I'm from the Philippines so we don't have a preconceived negative notion of elvis. I'm a new fan since the film and I'm on an elvis marathon. So far his 70s output and concerts were good, he was thin up to 74 and chubby in 75 but just got very overweight in the last 2 years of his life but his health was deteriorating rapidly and that 2 years does not represent the 8 years of the 70s. I've watched all but 4 of his films and found a lot of really good films, a lot of fun rewatchable films, and a lot of ok films, and really just 1-3 bad ones, kissin cousins being the worst imo.

“King Creole” is the only Elvis film I have on DVD. If it reminds you of James Dean, that’s probably because Dean was supposed to play Danny Fisher and Elvis replaced him after he died. It was helmed by Michael Curtiz, who directed “Casablanca” as well as a few other classics. The cast included Walter Matthau; Carolyn Jones (aka Morticia Addams); Dean Jagger; and Dolores Hart, who eventually left Hollywood behind and became a nun. Too bad she wasn’t cast in “Change of Habit”! I’ll probably pick up “Viva Las Vegas” at some point.

One complaint: You find too many things "a little weird" which bothered me because 1. not everything you said is weird is actually weird, and 2. you are judging past behavior based on how people are trained to think in today's pc world. Not a fan of 'presentism'. In fact, I could argue that people back then were more 'normal' than today!

Great discussion! Thanks for doing this. Been an Elvis fan since I was 9 years old as the movies were often on weekends during the day (early 80s). It can be hard to rank because, for example, Stay Away Joe is in many ways his worst movie but there are some excellent scenes and Elvis looks so cool and comfortable in his skin. Note when he is at the party and casually grabs a match out of his friends shirt pocket to light his cigar. Elvis looks great in this and is having fun. Too bad it’s such a bad movie. Girls Girls Girls is another one where Elvis looks fantastic and has great energy but the script is very light and he deserved better. I actually enjoyed Clmabake as I love the prince and the pauper premise, chemistry with Shelly Fabares, Bill Bixby (who I grew up with watching Incredible Hulk, some good songs, and an overall heartwarming story). Having said all that, here’s my stab at a ranking: 31. Easy Come, Easy Go 30. Double Trouble 29. Kissin Cousins 28. Speedway 27. Frankie and Johnny 26. Tickle Me 25. Harum Scarum 24. The Trouble with Girls 23. Paradise Hawaiian Style 22. Stay away Joe (because of Elvis energy and look) 21. Spinout 20. Charro 19. Clambake 18. Girl Happy 17. Girls Girls Girls 16. GI Blues (love the soundtrack tho) 15. Jailhouse Rock 14. Fun in Acapulco 13. Live a Little, Love a Little 12. It Happened at the Worlds Fair 11. Roustabout 10. Loving You 9. Viva Las Vegas 8. A few things... 1. In Roustabout Raquel WELCH (not "Welk") was one of the girls in the outdoor shower scene. I don't remember Teri Garr in that film but I do remember her in a non speaking role in Viva Las Vegas. She was one of the dancers in the C'mon Everybody sequence 2. Future superstar Kurt Russell famously appeared in It Happened At The World's Fair as a kid who kicked Elvis in the leg! 16 years later Kurt would actually play Elvis in the 1979 miniseries of the same name. 3. Among Elvis' leading ladies were Carolyn Jones (Morticia Addams from the Addams Family) in King Creole, Barbara Eden (I Dream Of Jeannie) in Flaming Star, Bond Girl Ursula Andress (whos dialogue was dubbed by another actress) in Fun In Acapulco, and Donna Douglas (The Beverly Hillbillies) in Frankie & Johnnie. Most actresses served time in only one Elvis film each but Shelley Fabares from the Donna Reed Show was in three! (Girl Happy, Spinout and Clambake) 4. You are correct about Elvis not wanting to rewatch Loving You because his mother was in it. He also never watched Jailhouse Rock because his co-star Judy Tyler was killed in an auto accident shortly after principle photography wrapped and 3 months before the film was released. 5. The original title of Love Me Tender was The Reno Brothers but it was changed to capitalize on his latest single which was featured in the film. You guys briefly mentioned his leading lady Debra Paget. That very same year of 1956 she had a memorable role as the slave girl Lilia in the The Ten Commandments. Elvis reportedly developed a huge crush on her and allegedly even proposed but she wasn't interested. 6. Yes, that was the legendary Bill Bixby in Clambake and Speedway. Long before The Incredible Hulk he starred in the 60's comedy series My Favorite Martian and the early 70's comedy/drama The Courtship Of Eddie's Father.

@@arveespelien1116 it's one of my faves because it was on TV in the early 70's when I was a nipper at Christmas and my Dad had bought himself a cassette recorder and he put the microphone to the TV and recorded it,so we heard the songs over Xmas!

Well, regardless of how we view the movies that Elvis hated doing, none of them never went under! EP still made his money from them and there still around!

Frank Welker didn't voice Shaggy on Scoobie Doo. He did the voice of Fred and later did the voice of Scobbie. Shaggy was voiced by the great Casey Kasem of American Top 40 fame. Casey also did the voice of Robin on the original Batman cartoons.

5 minutes into this video, you kept saying "us" but I thought the other person meant an unseen collaborator of the channel, it wasn't until you stood next to each other I realized you are two different people, or this is some "Kissing Cousins" style film trickery, idk I'm just starting the video.

I have them all on dvd and blu ray I was born after his death as well, they are a product of their time and shouldn’t be judged in modern eyes Before Elvis movies you had the talking horses singing cowboys type of entertainment that made no sense it’s just entertainment for family’s to enjoy The elvis films weren’t made for Oscar’s and awards they was made for elvis fans and it was the only way most of the world could see him so he had to sing in them not every song is gonna be great but the films stand up purely based on Elvis alone

I love to watch Elvis movies, they are a combination of drama, comedy, action, romance, and musical and I don't care what are others talking about. other says, Elvis should have done serious movies what? all movies are not serious, all are scripted and designed to please or entertain viewers period.

super weird comment section. a lot of all caps, and a lot of cranks offended at the idea that some of these throwaway movies from 60 years ago haven’t aged too well.
@Rewiretube2 ай бұрын
Yeah, whenever we write something Elvis-related, we tend to get a decent number of older commenters who really don’t like Elvis stuff to be criticized, even mildly

So you did not even finish watching one movie . How can you truthfully judge the film without giving it a chance? You mention Rotten Tomatoes scores, yet they are known for not having movies rated at all or incorrectly. Finally, for all the racist and sexist scenes you mention, I see no women's views here .I see you wearing t-shirts of bands that demean women in their videos and songs. I see no people of other races giving their opinions or you mentioning people of other races that have watched the films and their views. The actors back then had no trouble portraying the roles or they would not have done them. Not very thorough for an assignment guys.

@@Rewiretube I did watch it and its better than a lot of movies out today. Its comedy it's not brain surgery. Plus how could you miss Raquel Welch and Terri Garr in State Fair'? They both have scenes about 5 minutes long. Raquel even has lines. She's sitting at the table with the frat guys and Elvis speaks to them from the stage. You rely too much on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.

I'm also attempting to watch all of Elvis films and I have 4 more before I've watched them all! So far the worst I've seen is Kissin Cousins and Stay Away Joe bec it had no plot whatsoever. Elvis looks great in it, the cinematography is great but it was just 1 destructive act after another. I also didn't mind Clambake and enjoyed Fun in Acapulco a lot. Only the rear projections in it brings it down but I found it overall more enjoyable than Viva Las Vegas
