1K £ for that huge, very old and beautiful olive tree? That is quite a decent price. And yes, a stunner! Superb offer of big pots! These Yucca rostrata, omg! and these Acer, and... and...! By the way, we are used here to pronounce Chamaerops "Kamaerops" (ae being pronounced "é" in French but I don't know the equivalent sound/symbol in English). I love Acers and all their countless gorgeous varieties! (I remember Acer palmatum Aureum with it's so special leave shape and color, A. palmatum Deshojo and so many others...). Fantastic place, offer and video! Bravo et merci George!

I thought the olive was a very fair price, a lot of money in absolute terms but a good price for a lovely old tree like that! The maples were a highlight for me too. Yes, you're right, George, Mangaves grow perfectly well in the summer and cope with a very wet summer but I wouldn't leave them outside in winter. I bought six different varieties online from a nursery in Tucson, Arizona several years ago before they became popular in the UK and they adapted to life in Scotland with no problems. A week or two of sunny weather and they colour up nicely, a bit like Aeoniums do. I wish we had a nursery like this here but the ones we do have would not stock half the contents of your video for fear of people bringing back dead plants!
@GeorgesJungleGarden

Fantastic Alan and great to know you're an early boarder on the Mangave train! They are nice and something I may indulge in more when I get a bigger greenhouse built down the line. Great to know they colour up quickly with a bit of sun too! Just being around the nursery for an hour or so when they opened, they seemed to talk to pretty much everyone about their purchases which is great service but I think also gives people realistic expectations. Although in honesty, I think it's us plant 'enthusiasts' that are more likely to buy and kill borderline hardy plants than newer gardeners!

Great tour! You are right about having a nice foundation center place plant need at least one to build a small garden around. Here in Pensacola Florida sago cyads are easy to grow and easily survive the winter and I love them. We are also able to keep Pygmy date palms, cat palms and lady palms out all winter so I’m very blessed to be able to do so. My other favorite filler plant is bromeliads especially the Neogelia

Thank you very much! I thought I'd put another perspective out there - as much as the budget gardening videos are popular, sometimes the right specimen can really make a garden. You're definitely lucky to be able to grow the plants you can for sure! Here it's about recreating the look I suppose, mixed in with more seasonal plants but the main thing is enjoying your garden whether that's growing plants that suit your location or getting others to succeed despite it.

That's a scary thought haha! Nahh, I genuinely try to put a balanced outlook out there. I've had my fair share of supermarket / DIY shop plants but if everyone buys from there, that's all that'll be available soon enough and we'll miss out on the variety and expertise of these smaller places and specialists. I always try to hunt them out, often with the rarer plants, there's only one or two places selling them which says it all I guess really! That is a good price for the small Phoenixes, as long as you live in a sheltered spot or are prepared to give them a bit of TLC for the first few years. They do grow quickly though!

A cool tour mate. Really enjoyed it. Highlights for me were many. Love the rostratas, stunning. The yucca gloriosa citrus twist reminds me of the yucca brught star. I've got 3 acers in my garden, I'm a fan. Their acers were superb. The cycas is superb. Simply superb. Expensive but just beautiful. Really difficult to bring in and out without giving them sunburn even if you could lift them😂😂. Kept inside I just found them infested with sticky insects. I leave mine outside and I'll be doing the same with my £12 Morrisons jobs. Mangaves are definitely worth a go even up here. Ink blot and pineapple express encouraging couple of winters (for the former). Really good prices on the agave americana. Best two plants for me was the blue swans and that £500 cycas. Beautiful. Need to Rob Da Bank to pay for 'em but worth doing time for😂😂

Thanks Mr Calzone, one of these days I want to see a palm tour of the North East on your Instagram! I appreciate a 9 hour epic scurrying round the back streets might not be mainstream viewing but I image the commentary alone would make it worth watching... I'm completely with you on the Acers, Yucca and Cycad admiration! Like you say, heavy, hardening off is an issue etc. etc. BUT they look seriously cool! Maybe not worth doing time for but worth the chance of getting away with it! I had you in mind when I discussed the Mangave but wanted to give a more balanced and realistic care overview. I don't expect everyone goes to the lengths that some of us to with perspex cover etc. but for the brave few, they're definitely worth it and I'm toying with the idea of planting one out too...

Hi Arturo, that’s really surprising, I would have thought with a lot of the plants grown over your way and Brexit etc you would be getting them at a fraction of our prices. I’ve only ever seen places like My Palm Shop on the continent unfortunately and I’m not sure that any of the suppliers I tend to use here would send abroad. Maybe it’s worth checking out exotic / specimen plant specialists in Spain, it’s often the case that real specialists have the best quality plants and at cheaper prices than more general nurseries. Thoroughly enjoyed that George! Don't get to go to garden centres that often with the two kids so living vicariously through you in this video! Best part of a 3 hour drive from the Wirral to Linden but looks like a great place. Still trying to find localish places in Merseyside/cheshire that stock more than just bedding plants! As you said there's something reassuring about going and actually picking up your own plant so you can see its health, size etc. I'm looking to plant a small tree or large shrub next to some steps I'm building down to the patio but I know a spikey plant will have one my kids eyes out so any recommendations? I was thinking catalpa bignonioides, rhus typhina, mimosa dealbata or if there's a softer palm? Targeting 6ft/7ft in height ideally. Sunny spot. Keep up the good work my friend!

@@GeorgesJungleGarden it's a good 7m from the house and will be in an area of cleared lawn. Doesn't have to be evergreen. There's an Albizia on the other side of steps planted couple months ago so I'm keen to see what that does. Was just to maybe create a bit of a canopy over the steps with foliage rather than build a garden arch. A soon as the kids are grow up, half the lawn will make way for a Gunnera and tree ferns (though by then I expect I'll need a second mortgage for plants!). I've got family in Gainsborough which is probably close to you. Were you ever considering an open house for your Garden at any point?

Hi, there's different forms I believe, these for example are 'Blue Swan' which are more expensive in the trade than the standard rostrata but I suspect they'll be labelled up as 'rostrata' in many places so I'd largely go by the colouring of the individual plants unless you're buying from a specialist.

@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
No worries Craig. Honest answer, it completely depends on how cold the winters get over the next 10+ years and the spot you're planting it in. They're not the toughest palm but are relatively quick growing and get tougher the bigger they get. In a cold winter though, they're unlikely to survive without protection currently. So, with a run of mildish winters and planted in a relatively sheltered spot, it could be that climate change makes them a more viable long term plant further north...

The cycads are probably the oldest plant group which are still represented today in their cycas revoluta descendants, those and possibly ferns. They came millions of years before flowering plants and trees and even grasses I think. I think one of the first types of tree, which came along millions of years later was related to what we call Ginko trees now, and I think there is a fir tree / pine which is also related to the ancient forms of plant life . 🤔 I might need to check my facts though...🥴

My other favorite filler plant is bromeliads especially the Neogelia.

I think your comment got doubled up but one question I was going to ask you, what are your usual minimum winter temperatures? I’m intrigued and know even places like Florida which to to us seem quite ‘tropical’ can actually be really variable!
