I am jealous of how easy this is, being a former motorcycle mechanic and performing valve adjustments was a PITA since the shims were below the buckets so to change or even check the shim size youd have to remove the cam and then the bucket+ shim. worst part was the fact that the shims were smaller than a dime to, so if you dropped one while changing them you would be hard pressed to find it.

You want a real pain in the backside valve clearance adjustment.....Shim UNDER bucket on most sportbikes. You have to take the bike half apart just to get access to the valve train and even then, some have no room to work. In addition, once you get the clearance measurements, you have to pull the cams to adjust any that are out of spec. Gaaahh!!!!! The plus side is you won't spit a shim if you over rev it like can happen with shim over bucket. Also, they don't go out of spec very often so mostly need no adjustment when you check the clearances. I love your videos Faye. Keep up the awesome.

Good practice on reusing shims on a bucket and shim setup is to give them a light lap on a machinists stone before measuring to make sure no no high spots are on them 👌

This was interesting. I like how Danny reassured you that you were right. When I would adjust the valves on my ‘73 MGB with my Dad it was very different. I just remember leaving the car in gear, rocking it until a certain number would rise to the top, then checking the gap with the same tool y’all were using. Were we adjusting something different or just the engine is built different? Either way it’s cool learning as you go. I think you need a barrette for your chickens’ hair that looks like sunglasses. That would be a riot. 🕶

Faye, this was in the mid-80’s (I’m so old), from memory, there was a nut to turn to adjust the clearance. We also tuned the twin carburetors by listening to the pitch with a drinking straw to your ear. Where else can I learn about the newer stuff - by watching your videos.

I did the valve lash on my isuzu showing my son in the suv setting them cold then checking again hot for tolerances between hot/cold these new alum. heads will expand more then cast iron so tolerances are critical those pucks look like a cheap way to do it by the manf. can just see them fly out mine has bolts with lock nuts on top with loc tight old timers remember the bolt on rockers that tightened to tolerances had a 302 v-8 that beat them so bad that they worn down and had to be replaced motor was too small to haul around a f-100 full size truck with a 8ft bed lasted 350,000 miles before giving up did a rebuild on it lessons learned never do one on a block with that many miles on it even after having it checked cleaned it stilled cracked a cly wall

Just did this on my 95 3.0 4x4 4runner..passenger #1 exhaust cam lobe was wiped out. Every single exhaust valve was burned.. I.E. leak down text was leaking compression bad through exhaust. Decked the heads new cam,,valve seats,in&ex valves, guides, shims adjusted properly. Tested and cleaned all injectors. Got it all back together and it seems to be running pretty good. Although I think I need to adjust valves again after about 150miles of driving. I can hear some ticking on drivers side and can even feel it through the valve cover. Started just today. Fuck. I was hoping to never open those valve covers again! Also I exhaust wrapped the crossover pipe and manifolds where the wrap around the back corners of heads.
