Toys, games, clothing, restaurants and more, bootleg Mario products cover everything you could possibly imagine. So today, we'll be looking at it all!
In this video, we'll be going over unlicensed Mario plush, figures, video games, and even businesses that all use Mario's likeness without Nintendo's permission. There is a true rabbit hole of Mario bootleg content out there, and this video is here to preserve it all.

when i was 9, i was obsessed w/ super mario to the point i asked my parents for plushes of ALL the characters & enemies for my 10th birthday. this resulted in my parents indeed getting plushes of most chars & enemies, but here's the thing: almost none of them were official. wiggler, chain chomp, bowser, goomba, paratroopa, koopa troopa, you name an enemy, i had a plush of it on the kitchen table for my 10th birthday. there were like 45 in total. but most were bootlegs from ebay. i still played with them & enjoyed them anyway. but. my favorite, & the one i've kept after so long, even after we sold/gave away all the plushes, was a green yoshi. i've had him since that time, it's been about 8 years now. this whole time, i thought he was official. this video just revealed to me he's a bootleg. this yoshi has been with me across the usa, to disneyland, the grand canyon, los angeles, disney world, & now i'm finding out he was merely a cheap copy for easy cash.

I would rather spend money on the official thing so that the profits are seen by the original creators, however, it still stands that there's not always official merchandise of the character/item I want to buy, and even if there is, it could be limited edition and very difficult to get a hold of (or too expensive for my budget).

Hot Sauce Hysteria I feel like Joel ruined every bit of the official side of Felix the Cat's reputation as a franchise, although it was always small. Whenever you look at a comments section for an official Felix video or anything Felix The Cat unrelated to bootlegs, there's a high chance the comments sections will feature a ton of morons saying HET in reference to Joel. As a russian, i can say the popularity of bootleg consoles is VERY accurate. EVERY store that i went to, that sells electronics, always has either orange cartridges, or consoles with the box art saying "500 16 bit and 8 bit games included!!!". When you were talking about fan work at the end, I wish you had talked about the Grand Dad fan game- a game mechanically based on The Flintstones: Rescue if Dino and Hoppy and inspired by the infamous 7 Grand Dad bootleg game, but built from the ground up to be a love letter to bootleg video games. You even get to play boss battles against other bootlegs brought up in this video including Somari and Felix the Cat for the genesis. It’s free on game jolt and I highly recommend the game, aside from being a tribute to video game bootlegs in general it’s genuinely a lot of fun.

In Venezuela, I remember living very close to a Pizzeria in Maracaibo where they had Mario characters on the walls, hand drawn. They actually weren’t too shabby. The pizzeria itself was actually named just Mario Bros, with Mario and Luigi from MKDD on the banner. The best part? They specialized in mushrooms, whether it was pizzas or just toppings. Not sure if they’re still operating to this day, but I remember them cuz their pizzas were great :)

Chinatown is the best for getting bootlegs. I got some bootleg Pokemon figures which looked pretty cool. They were little figures of the Gen 6 starters that you would get inside a plastic poke ball, so you wouldn't know which one you'd be getting. None of the poke balls were the classic red though, just white bottom with random color on the top, so I got a purple one and a green one, to represent the Master Ball and the Safari Ball. I got Froakie and one of the two different kinds of Pikachus you could get. Pretty nice

12:02 oh man, I've seen this exact statue being sold in an anime convention. I thought it looked very suspicious, her chest was a lot bigger and her pose looked provocative. That gave me a good laugh at the time, I'm glad that was in this video. Also I'm not surprised that it was based on Sigurd Hosenfeld's art, I kind of find it amazing that it all comes together like that.

Oh my god, Dendy! Russian here, we had one. I don't think people knew that Dendy was a knock-off, the console was advertised as a "totally legit" product alongside NES, SNES and Sega, judging by the bits of the "Dendy: New Reality" show I've seen. Its host would often say that SNES was the best one, but not a word about Dendy being a bootleg, and Nintendo didn't want to lose to Sega, so, if I am not mistaken, they tolerated it for recognition points. And Sega was, indeed, popular. Back in the 2000s, when I was a kid, these consoles were still present on the market, and between an 8 bit console and a 16 bit one, of course I often chose to play Sega. It was an unfair comparison, but I was a little girl who didn't even need to know about the technical differences. And bootleg games? Well, I kinda knew they were a thing, but I didn't know which characters belonged to which company. I still have a book full of cheat codes for various Sega games, including bootlegs (in Russia we used to call them "pirated games"/"pirate games", and by those we usually meant unofficial releases and hacks), and guess what? There are codes for Kirby! Kirby on Sega, imagine that! So yes, the market was wild, and it went on for quite some time, outlived Dendy/NES, SNES and Sega. I think it's different now, but gosh, wild times.

The Russian game market has always interested me, thank you for the recount of your experience with it! It seems SEGA pirates are still very common, it's such a different scene compared to America. There's a great clip from the Dendy show online of the host talking about the Somari bootleg NES Sonic game, that always stood out as pretty wild to me.

@@PatMacYT I can confirm. Earlier today I went to one of the electronics store chains, possibly the biggest one here in Moscow, and I saw... "retro consoles" that were clearly trying to mimic Dendy (because Russians are more likely to recognize that version of the console) and Sega, only with "built-in" games, much like, say, NES mini, which I do have, or SNES mini. I have yet to watch full episodes of the Dendy show because the host, Sergey Suponev, died in 2001, and I was only 5 at the time, I wasn't old enough to catch his shows airing on TV, and if there were reruns, I missed them, even though Dendy and Sega were very important to me thanks to my mom who introduced me to those consoles and their games. Although Mario hacks did not hurt me, oh no. My trauma came from Ecco the Dolphin :'D Unless it's a cartoonish game like, say, Sonic or Ristar, or, I don't know, Spyro (og trilogy, Reignited, you name it), underwater levels still scare me. Even if it's a bootleg, I believe that Dendy served its purpose in the past and, in a way, continues to do so. Sure, little me did not know that Mario was a Nintendo character, but I had heard of him, and this is why I was so eager to discover and play other Mario games and get some merch too because he has a much stronger and more visible presence on the market these days compared to my childhood, when I was little Pokemon ruled with an iron fist, only because of the show, not the games. Still, seems like even back then Nintendo found ways to win.

Bootleg doesn’t always mean bad. Some unofficial plushes and similar products can be really good. It’s just that most are terrible. I used to collect bootleg Pokémon figures from a liquor store. They at most have 2 colours and never in the right places. I love them.
