Honestly its a valid criticism. In games like the Horizon series i love to drive around because the map, even though ive driven every road milions of times, feels amazingly alive and beautiful. The Crew games always have a bit of a bland and dead feel to them, casually driving doesnt feel all too fun that way.

True, plus it's a driving game. The main mode of transportation is also the main focus of the entire game. It's fun to drive, and the point of the game is, at its most fundamental level, to drive (or in this case, drive, fly, and sail). Why fast travel when you already have speedy transportation in the form of a super car, stunt jet, or speed boat? Especially when doing so is millions of times more fun than clicking buttons on a menu screen to be teleported to your location?

One of my biggest pet peeves in modern racing games. Is how fast you get top performing cars, the constant denial of using your own car, and the abandeonment of slow gradual progression where you learn to drive your cars bit by bit.

Oh, please don't bring up Splinter Cell. That still hurts to think about. That cameo in Ghost Recon Wildlands with him saying "Then it's only me..." upon hearing about Snake's Retirement (aka Konami studios pushing Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear out) hurt enough, but knowing that was 5 years ago already with no news on any new SC games, I just... I... *SCREAMS* No wonder retro gaming and emulators have been taking off more in recent history. AAA titles peaked in the 2000s, and the only games worth the money anymore are indie titles.

Oh the pivot point mechanic is the one thing that will make enjoying the game a real task for me. The modern Nascar games have the center pivot, the NFS games have it in the front bumper. The cars just don't feel logical (predictable?).

Just a quick correction. You do NOT need to complete 3 playlists before you can use your own cars in a playlist. Once you complete ANY playlist once, you are then free to use any car in that completed playlist. You can even customize the time of day, weather and even add a clean race modifier which rewards you even more credits. The tuning hasn't changed since the last game so nothing new there. They just renamed some parts, but they are basically identical.

Stick the game on easy mode, blast through the playlists to unlock fast travel and some nice cars. Then go back and replay them on a harder difficulty for more of challenge.

There’re planes for traveling if you really don’t want to explore. Also I thought the crew always has long races tho. I think the whole playlist thing is just preparing you for the weekly summits. The summit has always been the main thing for the crew series. Cars are expensive in this game. The playlists are kinda helping you slowly buying all the cars you might need in the future for a summit. And get used to buying bundles in the shop for an event. The thing I hated the most in the game is the livery editor and how all the after market wheels look like plastic chrome toys.

Hey Alex I don’t know if you noticed, but at 17:49 when you’re on the Plymouth road runner freedom edition. It says exclusive vehicle from the crew 2, purchasable in 55 days. So I think this means some vehicles will be purchasable at a later date. Not sure if it’s all of them but this is promising.

The Crew 1 was and still is my favorite car game I played in years. The calling all units dlc was the cherry on top, lovely stuff. Anyways in crew 1 I don't believe the AI ever rubberbanded at all. You could dust them in long races and leave them 18 miles away and such. I'm concerned that the Crew now is just an american Forza

The crew 1 had awful rubber banding haha maybe some of the worst in any racing game. On the long races you could get a huge lead but in the last 25% or so the ai would hit mach 1 and catch up to you. It sucked if you were doing hour+ races because it really came up to the last few minutes of the race in terms of if you would win or not

The problem with planes is that there isn't a dedicated plane series, than less its the boat series that I haven't played yet. Which means you aren't getting too many upgrades and are pretty slow. Much more efficient to use your alpha GP car you use for the motorsport playlist

Yeah progression is slow, but much more fulfilling than the likes of forza or need for speed. It's a different experience really. In 5 hours I was able to get 4 short story's Done with a friend, and we restarted events and fucked around alot 😂 it's not a serious game at all, it's just all about having fun

It takes 5 minutes tops to travel to a playlist, it only takes 15 minutes to travel the entire map going less than 150mph

The game can be a grind, but I believe it’s a better system than Forza’s. As a big Forza fan, I just can’t get behind the fact that they just give you popular cars for free with little to no effort. TCM isn’t perfect and yes Ubisoft can be a bit stingy, but there’s a better feeling when you’re cruising around in a car that you worked for and come along someone else that can’t quickly mimic it.

Honestly if you switch between car and plane a lot you can get around really fast...I did the trail version of 5h and completed 7 playlists on hardest difficulty. Ultimately I liked it but for 70€ it felt a bit too much, maybe in the future when the price drops.

Im gonna have to disagree with you this one, but its more of personal preference. I agree on the initial progression, its slow. But ive never actually felt a need for fast travel since its pretty easy to get across the map quickly. Cars move very fast in this world, and its fun driving on this map in general to me, so its not issue. If you do the Hawaiian playlist you get access to the boat and plane as soon as you do the missions. Which cuts down even more on travel making it go from a few minutes down to like a couple seconds to just fly and dive bomb into your next event 😂 and we didint even do that until later into the game. Theres the other thing, i think this gameplay is absolutley comical especially with freinds. Its the most fun ive had in a while on any racing game. This game is completely arcady and i love it. You got the customization, a solid list of cars, and a huge variety of events and race types. I was able to complete 5 playlists in 4 out of the 5 hours my friend had to play with me in the demo (i have the full game he doesnt) with restarts and us just having some fun fucking around. It was honeslty a blast. But idk that's just me 🤷‍♂️

I have a huge variety of complaints about the game, but had an absolute blast with it simply because I played the game with friends. The game is far better with some sort of company. Though I do want to address the fast travel. I'm sure you'd probably agree that there are people who don't want to drive two hours around the map to do about thirty minutes of races they've already completed. Because needing to basically complete most of the Playlist almost requires you to play the entire game. Which some of the people won't play certain Playlist for what they are.

Yeah i had so many fears when it came to this game. There many good things about it, the physics, the event types, the smaller yet very detailed map. But there are many questionable decisions as well. My concerns with the map came with how much content can be squeezed into this game in the long run, sure there could be map expansions but who knows if they plan to do it. The fact that i believe all playlists use loaned cars makes it kinda seem pointless to start from scratch if you already played TC2 and that using your own cars, apparently are limited to repeating the playlists or summits (maybe PVP but idk yet since i havent played the game but heard alot about it) so like, whats even the point of owning them if the events to use them are quite limited. If i get this game ill likely just import my cars since i really dont see a reason not to. And it does feel like this game is more of a dlc than its own game, kind of like wildrun but a separate title. I might still get the game, since there are some interesting stuff but its not up there in my must haves at the moment.

Open world racing games need more than just vehicles to be great. there should be properties you can buy, decorate and use to put your vehicles on display and invite friends/randoms into, there needs to be multiple areas for meetups where people can gather and walk around with proximity chat and make friends or rivals. there needs to be more life in the world like wildlife and people, this is Hawaii during a island wide festival I know I should be seeing people partying on the beach or yacht and see people hang gliding in the air or rock climbing, im okay with not being able to hit anyone but make the world feel alive at the very least during free roam, the crew is set up perfect for this.

The open-world racer genre is wearing a bit thin for me in general at this point. I had a lot of fun with Horizon's 3 & 4 but it was feeling very stale when 5 came around. Circuits are just better to race on. Hoping Forza Motorsport will be good

What really made The Crew stand out was the map, and limiting it to just *one island* in Hawaii immediately took that feeling of individuality and excitement of driving an extremely scaled down United States with a number of roads and places to check out away from the game. I'll be sticking to The Crew 2.

You can turn off spoken GPS directions, but every time you reselect a mission or relaunch the game you're forced to listen to Cara's chipper introduction *again.* Another of many Ubisoft-isms. When you play enough games by this company there's a certain type of design philosophy you come to expect, and it's not just about empty open worlds with towers. Having played TC1 without ever having played a Horizon game, TC1 felt amazing in the customization that was available (rally raid Skyline? Sign me up!), as well as the free roam breadth(sp?). After playing FH5 and TC2, I can't help but feel limited by the Specs of the cars. Like, my fastest rally car in FH5 is a CLK GTR and I have a drag racing Willis Jeep. TC games wouldn't let me do something like that unless they designate those cars for those classes. TC1 also had those huge, hour+ races at the end that, assuming Ubisoft's servers didn't kick me out, were some of the most fun woth a driving game I've ever had. TC2 didn't have anything like that, despite using the same (or a slightly modified version of the same) map in the time I played it and unless this game does, I don't foresee myself ever getting it. Oh yeah, one other thing. In TC2, the planes and boats felt...weird. They were obviously in the game from the start so they weren't an afterthought, but they never felt fully fleshed out. Maybe that's an issue with them using the same map as the first game and not planning for them in map design and maybe they're better in this one? Either way, they always felt clunky and I never particularly enjoyed them back then.

What kills me about this are two things: 1. Lack of scope/unique features. The condensed USA map was incredible, maybe not the most detailed but traveling across the canyons, deserts and the northern forests with tunnels is an experience that hasn't been replicated. TC2 for years was my cruising game of choice.. TCM's map had me tuning out within a few hours. 2. Lack of saner PvP options. No 8player lobby with FIXED car disciplines like TC2 but the constant revolving door, chaotic 28man Grand Races that are more mayhem than allowing for expression of skill and joy of driving.

I played a bit in early beta and I just couldn't get into it. I didn't like the car handling, I obsoletely suck at any and all water crafts in the Crew series in general and I just didn't get it. When I compare it to the Forza Horizon series or even NFS heat I would just rather go back and play those. The Crew 2 I enjoyed up to the hovercraft races and then I rage quit as those races I just could not finish and I honestly think that those races have left such a sour taste in my mouth for the Crew games. Maybe I'll try this one again when it's cheaper. Thanks for making a video of an honest look at it, helps to see other perspectives.

Just a heads up, I have completed nearly every playlist and no, it doesn’t ever let you use your own car. Granted, you can go back after you’ve already won and *then* use your own, and in fact some of the post-championship challenges you get make you do that, but at that point why bother Definitely a weird design choice

the fast travel, I have done the 10 for the global fast travel, but it isn't really tbh, its only to events not to a random road or slightly off where it would just tp you to the closest road like FH5. One other thing is that than less you've no-lifed the crew 2 your never getting the 100% car catalogue, but I guess they could put the specials in the weekly summit. Apart from this, the sounds is great, the car list is amazing from the Bolide to the wide range of off-roaders. Money isn't too hard to come by while you do events. The rewind system is perfect as you can't abuse it for the weekly summit as it still lets the timer count up and the points are total time based. The difficulty levels are great as races can be actually difficult, at any perf level. Finally the car customisation(vanity wise) is just as crazy as the crew 2, e.g. the cobra can be made a coupe or you can make the BMW M4 have a full on track toy kit. It's just that the lack of fast travel is pointless as you have so much exploring to do through the challenges you can do once you completed the race. One last nit-pick is that the ai traffic isn't ghosted for summit events which has made any slalom events a pain in the ass and luck to get a good score. They also decided to release it when Baulders Gate 3, Starfield, Forza Motorsport and a few headline Nintendo games are coming out within the next two months. Did I make a big paragraph: yes, but I've played the game a lot and I have experienced at least a little of everything... There is limos, yes, be happy :D

I think the last arcade racer that perfected all of the points Alex made was Midnight Club L.A. Perfect size to the city, parked cars, pedestrians, etc. to make the game look like people actually live there. Fast travel direct to races if you don't want to drive around. Great progressions system, start with crap cars, work your way up to high performance ones. Balanced amount of traffic to make it look realistic but not frustrating. Great customisation. None of this "you need to play our older games to have access to this car" bullcrap either. All these open world arcade racers just look the same now. I was thinking about trying this one but I fear it'll give me the same feeling of The Crew 2. Play for 5 or so hours, get bored, uninstall.

I'd say a very fair and accurate review 👍. The game itself is very good with brilliant visuals and polish and I like it. The controls and UI when not racing though are painful, and if I'm playing the single player mode I don't want to have to be permanently online.

Most of the crew 2 locked cars you showed off were special versions that were earned through events. It makes sense to not just sell them in this game if you couldn't buy them in the previous. The only issue with that point is that it only seemed to be some of those special cars. I guess they wanted to let some of them be purchasable while others were still signs of previous work.

I play mainly on ps5 and this had been a blast, I have played forza horizon 4 on pc (not 5) and I think this game has a similar feel, drive great using the dual sense, triggers and haptics feel amazing and playing on a g29 feels great too. My hours is up but I'm gonna now buy it. If forza horizon 5 was on ps5, than I probably go for that instead but this is a fun racing game, with good graphics and driving.

My main draw for the crew 2 was that the map was so wide and you could spend ages exploring around in new places and there was a real sense of adventure, variety and limitlessness. Of course, the trade off for that was low detail and poorer graphics. But why is that still the case in a much smaller map? The car list is also frustrating because so much is carried over. I am not going to get this. It just looks underwhelming

most of the exclusive vehicles i had noticed were the event reward cars, they're locked in the crew 2 as well unless you won it in that event. they do repeat those events in the crew two, maybe theyll add those events into this game and you can get them again. like the crew two, but hate that system

Pivot point in center of the car aka CMR method. That's why i never really got along with CMR games.

That lockout is one of the most asinine systems I've ever heard of. We have 604 cars but 89 of them are only accessible if you already unlocked them in a game from a few years ago and there's NO WAY to bypass this at launch. Who on EARTH thought that was a good idea?

The crew 1 was able to fall on its own original ideas, a massive detailed map with many real landmarks, an underground story complete with freeroam police and a good selection of vehicles which all have tunes for different racing specs (updated further in the expansions) the crew motorfest is just forza horizon with boats and planes (who even asked) with janky physics and a different map, and even then you’re still expected to grind to get the best parts for your car (or buy crew credits of course) something horizon would never dream of doing.

Also what’s with filling the car list with every single variant of the same car? Just have the stock vehicle and a variant list when you select them to stop all the car clutter, a modified version of the same car doesn’t make it another car, 600+ would easily be dropped to 350 if they did it that way

the air physics looks horrid lol. i hope it was just alex's poor handling of the plane then the game's physics. W/S needs to be elevator control, A/D for roll q/e for yaw. then have a separate control for power setting.

Locking stuff to the previous game makes no sense to me. If I was to buy this it would be the first in the series that I’ve played - I’m not going to buy another whole game just to get the locked cars but equally if I have no ability to access content in the game I’m purchasing - I’m much less likely to want to purchase it in the first place.

I agree with what you said, I played the 5 hour demo for 2 hours and I was already bored, the physics and sounds are really good, but they put all this rubbish at the beginning of the game it just ruins it

I loved the crew 2 spent many hours exploring and just driving around with people. Tried motorfest for about 3 hours and just got bored. There’s nothing really interesting about it, yes physics are better and cars are better but they somehow feel slower… doing 150mph in the old game felt fast, but in this it feels around 50mph. The map also just felt characterless. For a game that originally made a massive but scaled down version of America to then drop down to a tiny even more scaled down version of just Hawaii and somehow feeling even more empty. Flying also feels way worse so a lot of the fun has just gone. Doesn’t help it ports over almost every car you owned in crew 2 to motorfest because I already owned some of the fastest cars in the game without having to do anything, so it kind of made progression pointless (yes you can turn that feature off but still). I think if you are going in totally blind having never played the older crew games or games like test drive etc, You will probably like this but having played all those way better games this just feels boring.

I couldn't agree more. There should be a sandbox mode. Every car and upgrade should be available starting day one. Most people don't have endless hours to grind. That's my biggest complaint otherwise the game is great. I must be getting too old but do not have the time to waste hours upon hours making money to unlock things.

Wow, this is a huge let-down. I know at least some of Ivory Tower are old Test Drive devs, and hearing they were going back to Oahu I had huge hopes. This... this is a travesty. This is Forza Horizon: Ubisoft Edition. From the checkpoint style, to the festival sites, to rewind, every last bit of it was just copy-pasted from FH. And how have they gone SMALLER on Oahu?! They were doing better well over a decade ago! Sad. Can't wait for Test Drive: Solar Crown to come back and put Ubisoft in its place - maybe even take on Microsoft! Stellar vid as always.

I was quite excited about Motorfest, but it seems that it is trying to capitalise on the fact that TDU isn't on Hawaii anymore. I also hated The Crew's driving physics as it felt like a slightly better version of the driving in the original Watch Dogs. I am, however, still holding out for TDU:SC as the videos so far shows that the driving physics looks to be pretty good. And, of course, it has a 1:1 map again. Hopefully it doesn't get delayed again...

most of the stuff you "didnt expect" from a crew game already was in c2 like the whole pro settings ect and you had to make a ubisoft acc for c2 even on pc /steam the locked stuff might be anoying for someone who havent played the previous game(as much) but its also annoying to spent so much time in a game and when the next game comes out you lost all so its nice to have a little reward for those ppl to be fair maybe the better aproach would be to make them available (later on) but expensive ? but then you will have those players who want to have some sort of badge for thier playtime that make them feel special and why not again they invested time and effort

i dont know, maybe I'm old, maybe I'm jaded, but I'm getting bored with whipping around in hypercars in (sub)tropical locations. FH2, FH3, FH5, GTA V, Crew, Crew 2, NFS Heat, and now this... at this point i would welcome some old 80s and 90s "regular traffic" kind of cars, in a location like North Dakota, just to break up the same tired formula. I find it more fun to take a low end, unassuming car, and turning it into a straight up beast.

Interesting thing I should mention regarding the locked cars, I saw most of the cars say "Exclusive to The Crew 2", except for the Plymouth Roadrunner Freedom Edition at 17:49 where it says "Exclusive to The Crew 2. Purchasable in 55 days." 🤔🤔🤔 Does that apply only to that car? Or maybe all the other ones will be unlocked then as well? Just a theory

Interesting first point: a duel carriageway is NOT 4 lanes / 2 in either direction. A duel carriageway is TWO pieces of concrete with a division. So a duel carriageway could be one lane in both directions and have a dividing making it a duel carriageway. In England when you see a National speed limited this varies depending what type of road you are driving on. So if you are driving on a one land road divided to the other road in the other direction the National speed limited is still 70mph.

I'm going to be honest: I don't quite understand the criticism of "the playlists taking too long". This is the main aspect of the game, after you finished all the playlists there isn't that much to do apart from doing them again. They damn well better take a long time to complete.

I'm not from Hawaii, but that massive wide road thing you're talking about 100% exists here in Philadelphia. There's actually one within walking distance of my house that's only two lanes wide, but said lanes can easily fit a bus and a car side by side in them.

Honestly, I really want to like the game. But when I went to boot up a game last night, I bypassed it entirely to boot up horizon 5. When a shiny new game has absolutely no appeal in comparison to a game that's already been out for about 2 years, there's something wrong. And yeah, that might only be me, but it's sad. I loved the first crew game, and enjoyed the second, but this just couldn't hold on to me

Very nice review covering the details. Seems, for now, it's a good example of a game to wait 6-12 months and see what shape it's in by then. I got Crew 2 only a year ago when they had sorted all the issues and I enjoyed it a lot more than Forza Horizon 5 (aka 4.5). I just wish they had ditched the planes and boats because those are not what I'm looking for in a car game.

My biggest gripe with the game so far, every single car does a burnout that ive driven, lambos, gtrs, awd cars shouldnt do that and should launch. Coming from forza and horizon its a little bit of a let down but I do like it because its something new. Just wish it was a little more realistic. The graphics and sounds are great and the game is fun overall. Edit: customization is cool, the upgrades are stupid. Make it seem like fortnite with the common and legendary loot bs. Might as well just copy forza bc theres is great. The tuning as well. I want to be able to lower cars lol

The game is amazing, far better than the last two Horizon games, better map, slightly better progression, much better customization, etc. My only complaints are the ghost cars are annoying while driving around and I wish I could change the finish on the wheels, other than that it’s a another nice change of pace from the unimaginative Horizon games and the NFS games that have continued to struggle to make anything good since Black Box was at the helm. Do you really need to be able to fast travel literally everywhere? This map isn’t as big as the other Crew games or Test Drive was, so you really shouldn’t.

The biggest problem with The Crew games: Car parts. They try WAY too hard to be different from other games in the way you upgrade your car and it is HORRIBLE. I DO NOT want to win races and challenges to have a chance at upgrading my car, or unlocking a part that is super rare, I want to be able to go to the performance shop any buy any parts I want if I have enough money. Literally every other racing game I have ever played has more common sense in that area then any entry of The Crew series. I quite frankly don't understand why they haven't fixed this broken system
