Hey Mark, welcome back! Guess what I bought recently? A Leica M 240! Great camera, and they've resolved the slowness that IMHO plagued the earlier versions. BTW regarding flash, I simply use my Canon Speedlite 580 II in manual and go old-school. And yes, it works (in manual) with the remote transmitter.

Using a Leica M camera slows you down so you can think about the image before you shoot. I have used SLR and DSLR cameras and Leica rangefinder cameras. My best work was with the Leica M cameras. Guys with DSLR cameras seem to just bang away and get as many images of the same scene as they can put on a card and then spend a lot of time going through the images trying to decide which ones are savers. Leica shooters take the time to get the composition, focus, DOF, and exposure correct the first time. Remember, no camera system is perfect. Choose a system that works for you for your type of photography.

Leica M series rangefinders cameras have manual focusing. Manual focusing isn't so difficult or slow for everyone. After a short time of practice it becomes very easy and fast. Manual focusing until mid 80's was the standard way of shooting photos. Afterwards first with the Minolta and a little later with the Canon and Nikon autofocus became a standard. During the 90's we had the autofocus war. An important aspect of a camera and lens was its fast autofocus. Nowadays that isn't so important with dSLR camera but it is still an issue with mirrorless cameras which don't have the benefit of optical phase detection. To truth is that in Sport photography, wild nature photography and journalism everything changes fast and there isn't time for manual focusing. For these situations fast autofocus is essential. Most photographers are satisfied with zoom autofocus lens. A huge percentage of a lens cost is dedicated to zoom and autofocus capability. This cost with a prime manual focus lens is spent in better optical quality and sometimes in smaller size and weight. That's why manual focus, prime lenses are nearly always superior optically than the autofocus zoom lenses of the some price and focal length.

Your comments about flash with the Leica certainly resonate. I shoot film Leica's. Even with the TTL it is such a joke. Very difficult to figure out what your getting. The worst part is that it is not consistent. And to be honest, you really need the ability to be able to use flash effectively. It increases the versatility of the camera. Other than that, they are wonderful.

@10:19 It's not that the cameras are "made for natural light photography." Leica put the hot shoe there for a reason. But many of the purists are taken with Cartier-Bresson's "using flash with a camera is like taking a pistol to the opera" analogy. But how many of them use a 35mm lens when HCB's preferred focal length was 50mm? Perhaps they're just excusing their own fear of flash. (I do take a pistol to the opera, in case of emergency: the right tool for the job and all that.) I'm in the process now of trading in my Sony FF kit on a M10. It's taken me a while to realize the modern techno-marvels don't suit my style for day-to-day use. I almost wish I'd done it before my trip to SE Asia earlier this year, but that trip was what solidified my thinking. I spent some time handling a M10 in store to make sure my manual focus skills are still up to the job. The dealer's backed up with trade-ins due to the holidays, so the equipment appraisal on my trade-in gear isn't yet complete.

The only thing that prevents me from purchasing a Leica camera and Leica lenses is their price. In comparison to mirrorless or dSLR cameras or lenses of similar quality, they are three to four times more expensive and with some models even more. Something that is rarely pointed is that Leica m-mount cameras usually must be sent to the official Leica service centers for the calibration of their rangefinder focus system. That usually must be done annually or more frequently. It is not cheap and requires some days. Of course high quality is never affordable. For some people with deep pockets a digital Leica m-mount camera with all its lenses isn't expensive at all. For the rest of us, a full frame Sony α7 with a Sony Zeiss lens is good enough. Maybe in the future I will buy a less expensive Leica 35mm or 50mm m-mount lens for my sony α7 with an adapter. Not wider than 35mm because these Leica m-mount lenses, have issues with the sensors of mirrorless cameras.

great video, I have had some time with these cameras too, but what you say about the 135 mm lens needing a viewing system is not true (for digital systems only) the comments, I think are referencing the FILM 'm' cameras; they DO NEED a " visoflex " system to focus - as the 135 mm lens is hard to focus for Macro shots without it, also some cameras have a 0.72 x rangefinder glass, other types of magnifications(0.85, etc) as well as other older cameras ( m 2/m 3) for eg. don't have a frame line set for these lenses this is what i think they were commenting on .

It's interesting you mentioned how much you like the viewfinder on a rangefinder and all the benefits. However, those benefits are also there with the X-Pro1 (now the X-Pro2) system. Minus the great optics that Leica M system has. I rented the M for a week with a 35mm f2 ASPH. My usual camera is an A7II with 35mm f/2.8. Tried to like it but it doesn't work for me. The rangefinder viewfinder is great, but focusing manually proved a bit too tricky since I was born in the autofocus era (literally when Minolta came out with AF) and my subjects do not stay still for more than 1sec (my fiance who hates being photographed). Frankly I got much less usable shots from the M than even my iPhone 7 Plus. The build quality is great, and the camera and lenses are a joy to use. It's just that it's too slow for me while being also very obvious I'm taking photo and getting noticed. However, when you got the shot, it's really beautifully rendered - I think Leica knows some magic about still photographic rendering. If it's less expensive I would consider this being my walk around camera. For now, I got a X-Pro2 with 23mm f2 (hmm, that lens :( ) and upgraded to an A9 for fast moving stuff.

You should have bought the 50mm APO. It puts the 50mm f/1.4 in the dust. He says "21mm f/3.5 is the sharpest lens I've used". I'd argue the 21 f/1.4 is much sharper and the 50 APO is the best on the planet.

As long as you don't use your LCD on any camera they will last forever. I got a Canon 100D (SL1 in US) and the battery is rated for 350 images. Last weekend I was shooting motocross and filled my 64GB card with images using about 1/3 of the battery. So I took 2800 images even though the battery is rated for 350 because I rarely use the LCD on 1/3 of the battery.

I love just looking at those Leica lenses, they are so small because of not having autofocus, being a guy who loves photography gear, to my eye they are like little pieces of jewelry, so I can see why you are enjoying using that system for your travel photography, but you say after trying the A7r ll that you think it is an amazing camera, the best camera to come out in the last ten years, so did it make you consider giving up your M and going Sony, and possibly even giving up all your other gear and just having the one camera system that you can also use with your adapted existing glass ??????????

At 5.02 you say that you see what you are shooting with a rangefinder camera. Correct me if I am wrong but I think there will be parallax errors to consider, particularly with closer subjects, i.e. the difference between the image seen in the viewfinder and that seen by the lens.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The whole technical concept of rangefinder cameras has been outdated since SLR cameras came up, though - which was more than 60 years ago. And professional photo journalists were using TLR cameras before that... So rangefinder cameras have always been "amateur" cameras and always will be. Ok, there have been some artists using them. But then artists have used Holga and Lomo cameras and even iPhones. - Today's amateurs would like to use zoom lenses. And rangefinder cameras really won't work properly with zoom lenses. - Thanks again Mark for sharing your experience, which in my opinion just proves the point that you are a great photographer who can use practically any camera with great results, even a Leica M.

+buyaport What does being 'outdated' have to do with being professional? Of the five people with Leica M cameras I know, three are professionals, one even shoots massive corporate advertising for international brands in Tokyo. I shoot the M for events throughout the city and when I'm out of the studio shooting models. As for zooms: there are no real zooms nor ever will there be with rangefinders. You'll probably find that people that use rangefinders are a different breed. They don't need, and many don't want, zoom lenses. But of course, telling you - a person whose authority on rangefinder users seems to outstrip the users themselves - is pointless. It would be so nice to not hear from bozos with anti-brand bias or a chip on their shoulder vis-a-vis a certain type of camera.
@FauxtakuLounge
@FauxtakuLounge 8 жыл бұрын
buyaport I should start out with an apology: 'bozo' was a bad word, a mean word, and one that wasn't warranted. I can't take it back but wish I could. If you can forgive me for that, I'd like to address your points. The reason I said 'anti-brand bias' is because of your final sentence: 'even a Leica M'. Up until that point, you were talking about rangefinders, of which many exist from dozens of manufacturers. You use of 'even' suggests that you think very little of Leica. Which is fine. I know only a hand full of people that respect the brand. But I also know several very high-end photographers with international clients that use them almost exclusively for digital work. I also agree with you that most professionals use dSLRs with zoom lenses. It is because of convenience. As you must know, there is nothing 'convenient' about the M. Not only is it 100% manual focus 100% of the time, its metering, flash system, and even the way a tripod attaches, means that you must go through different, if not more difficult steps to do some of the same stuff that is practically automatic on dSLRs. Why I said 'breed' is because very literally (neither good nor bad), people that use Leica cameras are, in general, willing to go through different steps, and approach photography in a different way. Oftentimes, the interaction model they use is different. As are the subjects they shoot. I shoot only models with the M. For everything else I use a Linhof M679CS or Fujifilm GX680 III: both cameras that make the M look straightforward and swift. Even back when I shot dSLRs for a studio, I used AiS primes for the most part, but for sports or convenience shoots (school outtings, etc), I used a 28-70D 2,8 Nikon Zoom. Why? Because it did everything. But did I like it? Not particularly. Nor do I meet a lot of people that enjoy zooms. One guy does. He has the Bigma. But almost everyone else enjoys using smaller primes. These are amateurs. The last time I met a pro, he had a 24-70 on his Canon 5D. But that only speaks to the work the person does, and to the style of photography they are involved in. I for one am in advertising and shoot macro (jewellery, audio gear, etc.) for a living. When I'm off the camera stand and out of the studio, it is my pleasure to use the M, which is confined to events (embassy wine and cheese events) and earphone or jewellery models. I think your model which predicts who prefers and uses what is too simplistic. I called you a bozo for that reason. I'm sorry for the word. But you are reducing things to an improper dichotomy. There is far more to photography than zooms VS. primes.

+Mark Roudebush My focus skills on a rangefinder aren't as good as yours. But I generally agree. Actually, at night, I find it much easier (for my eyes) to sync with my fingers and focus. Nearly always I nail high-ISO, small DOF focus points with the M240 at night.

28/50/90mm. Respectfully, he should have bought a 35mm focal length lens as his first (and perhaps only) Leica M lens. Since he bought a 50mm instead, adding a 35mm is redundant. A 28mm added to a 50mm gives much more versatility and is supported natively by the viewfinder of most Leica M cameras (film and digital). Then, if needed, a 90mm for portraiture and landscape work. Now, if I worked for Adorama, I'd have a 21/28/35/50/75/90mm setup ;-)

Thanks for the long-awaited video on Leica M. Very informative. I are about to buy a Leica Q, as a supplement to my 5D mk III. But I must admit I am in doubt. The problem is that my girlfriend, who also photograph, will also use it, so I know that the lack of auto focus will be a deal breaker for her, and when you pull out the relatively large purse, it is silly to mess with the home front. What do you say, have you tried Leica Q? I know that the problem of being blinded by the EVF is a real thing. But what do you say cons and pros.? Kind Regards Henrik

On auto everything (she calls it her Instamatic) it takes really beautiful photos, and for travel and street photography, I think it is the equal of the M, as long as you are happy with 28mm. (Basically the same FOV as an iPhone.) For me, the M is great because I'm willing to put in the extra effort to make it work, but it's not for everyone. Oh, and hang onto your 5DIII - it will still come in handy. :)

You coukld better buy the 90mm insteaad of the 135mm.The M240 viewfinder supports the 90mm ,not the 135mm.

+helthuismartin That is not true - the 135mm frame line is with the 35mm frame line. I have used 135mm on M4 cameras with no problem.

If you shoot your 50mm lens wide open, at f1.4, say, I think you will need the VF-2 to focus accurately consistently. Perhaps you don't shoot at f1.4 very often. With Leica's 0.95 50mm Noctilux I think you WILL need the VF-2 for accurate focusing wide open.
@Pepingco
@Pepingco 8 жыл бұрын
+waytoosquirrelly I regularly shoot at 1.4 - using Live view with Focus peaking is just fine and accurate enough to nail focus. I also know 2 Noctilux owners who have shot Lieca for years and can do it via the viewfinder at 0.95, but I have yet to see a test shot, I just see their final shot and they tell me it was all via the OVF. Either way, I rarely pick up my VF2 and I just leave it in my bag and when I go hiking, it stays at home.

If your two Noctilux-owner friends can consistently do what they say while you're standing there watching them, I'll be amazed. Using a tripod and the M's 'Live View' feature at the same time, perhaps they could, but not otherwise.
@Pepingco
@Pepingco 8 жыл бұрын
waytoosquirrelly I would say that while I can nail 1.4 when I have enough time, I can do it via the OVF, peaking on the LCD helps, but I still cant find a reason to put my Electronic Viewfinder on top of the camera. I tried focusing at 0.95... forget it - I'll never be able to do it without the LCD and peaking. I think I get better results without the VF2 and use the back screen instead. That being said and like I said, my friends only showed me final prints at 0.95 that they nailed and said they can do it through the OVF. Doesnt make me want to get my VF2 out though - I have more important things to put ontop of my Leica lol.

If I had my M on a tripod, I could certainly focus the Noctilux at 0.95 with the help of Live View on the back screen. Trying to focus the Noctilux at 0.95 using Live View and the back screen while hand-holding the camera, however, is a very slow, jiggly process.

I'd really like one, but they're so ridiculously overpriced to the extent of making me angry each and every time... They're really good, and the photos they take are pretty distinct, but no way is the asking price worth that distinction. Very, VERY few can tell the difference. The other part the gets me really frustrated is how their ecosystem SUCKS. YOU can't own Leicas as your only gear if you're serious about photography... You just can't.
@jimslater9259

+Aw Snap Why does the price of Leica cameras make you angry? Any person who wants an can afford them will enjoy using them just as a person who spends a ridiculous amount of money on a BMW or Mercedes will enjoy their car. As for your last statement - why can't you have Leica as your only gear and still be serious about photography. I have had many friends in camera clubs who were excellent, very serious photographers and they used only Leica gear. I have also known pros who were exclusive Leica users. It all depends on the type of photography you are interested in. Imagine shooting a wedding inside the church during the ceremony. Back in the film days, most clergy would not allow SLR cameras in the church during the ceremony, but Leica was allowed.

Because in october 2015, it was possible to buy Sony a7rii for half the price of the Leica m240, and i think even the most diehard Leica fans will admit that the sensor in the Sony is miles ahead of the m240s sensor. Not to mention autofocus and 4k video quality.

But the two are not mutually exclusive. You can have a well built camera that offers you all the ''shooting experience'' you want and in the same moment uses the most modern components. What bothers me about Leica is that they have become a luxury brand and a status symbol. There are very little if any rational justifications for buying any Leica camera, as of today, November 2016. Their rebranded cameras and numerous special/limited edition releases only strengthen this impression of a company manufacturing products for people who more than anything care for the ''red dot''. Why could Leica not use the most modern technology in their cameras? Because now they seem like Vertu, cool looks and a hefty price tag, but extremely underpowered. All their sensors are worse than the competition. Focusing with a rangefinder is at least cumbersome, if not frustrating in most situations. (I have a Zeiss film rangefinder and a Mamiya 7II, so I know what I'm talking about). I get it, some people are nostalgic and love rangefinders. But why can Leica not offer an additional functionality of an OLED focus peaking in the optical viewfinder or at least an overlay evf like Fuji? What they have excellent, is lenses. But Leica bodies are overpriced toys. The m10 will likely use the sensor from the SL, which is worse in every respect than the sony a7rii sensor. What would be super cool would be if they had the balls to implement the expensive new CMOSIS 48MP sensor with the global shutter, alongside 8k video (the sensor can do it) and optical viewfinder with oled focus peaking, ideally dual color. That would be completely logical, because during video, you don't need autofocus. That camera I would actually buy. But now, Leica makes equipment for rich hipsters.

Alejandro Ilukewitsch The question is, why can you not have BOTH the ''shooting experience'' and state-of-the-art components? Are these two mutually exclusive?
