I was there too (Gonville and Caius), MPhil in Politics and IR. Had to finish remotely because of the pandemic, but I feel for the people there now :-/

Thank you for this very informative and well-planned video! I am about to start an MPhil in Literature and had no idea what to expect, now I feel much more at ease. I wonder, what did you mean by using gowns to visit other colleges? Is it a pre-requisite? 😊

Could you do a video or something about your application to Cambridge?
@EwaHannaHenderson3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll definitely add that to my list of videos to make. 😍

could you speak to the process / difficulty / resources cambridge provided for applying for a PhD while doing your Mphil? Is there an academic officer who can help with / revise PhD applications ? Was it hard to apply while going to class, doing coursework , etc. ?

This is extremely helpful for me! Could you tell me what should I prepare before I actually apply for Ph.D. in Cambridge, such as to what extent should I prepare for my research planning if you can tell. ( Also I'm quite interested in what you wrote about for your thesis just cuz I'm doing Generative L2 on syntax base)

Thank you so much for your comment, I'm glad you found the video helpful. I think in preparing for a PhD, the most important thing is understanding your subject area and the research you want to undertake: understanding what makes it special, thinking about how you plan to address any of the field's/project's shortcomings, and, perhaps most importantly, knowing how your project will positively impact the field. All this information should be in the research proposal. Another really crucial thing to carefully consider is how you plan to carry out the research: methodology, research tools, time frames, and so on. The reason these things are so important is because, when you have your interview for the PhD program, they will undoubtedly ask you in great detail about all these things and, therefore, the more you understand about your project and field, the better. I would also advice you to "research" your potential supervisor, and, once you know, the people who will be interviewing you (your proposed supervisor will usually be present at the interview along with one or two other people). That way you can be more prepared for any questions they might ask. In response to your question about my thesis, I wrote mine on the underlying maximal projection of DP in a northern Swedish dialect, situating the research in the context of Insular and Mainland Scandinavian (making use of minimalism). I hope you found this information somewhat helpful, please don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions about what I just wrote or anything else in general.😍

Hi Ewa! Thank you for making this extremely video. As I will start doing my course next year at KCL, I am searching relevant video for applied linguistics programme. By the way, my programme is a 4-year continuous programme from Mphil to Phd, maybe the first year for Mphil and we need to get a transitional check or exam or something to get into PhD. I just wonder, does Cambridge provide the same option like this? Or the Mphil just ends by itself and not gonna let students continue the PhD. And I also noticed from your later videos that you are doing PhD at Oxfords, so could I ask why did you make the change (cuz I thought getting Mphil at Cambridge meant you would get into the PhD programme in Cambridge as well but it was not). Thanks!

How do you get into the program?

Hi, may I ask when do ppl usually receive outcomes of their application to Cambridge linguistics? I got offers from unis in the US but still waiting to hear from Cambridge.
@EwaHannaHenderson2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I think it usually takes between 8-10 weeks (from the application deadline) to hear back about a final decision and/or offer, usually earlier if an interview is needed.
@gltd6832 жыл бұрын
@@EwaHannaHenderson Thank you Ewa. It appears strange, but a reason for my application to cambridge is to seek transition from Linguistics (my undergraduate major) to philosophy (which utilises formal semantics and logic). I plan to do a half-linguistics half-philosophy project with Prof. Jaszczolt as the writing sample for philosophy MA programs. Do you think that there is some amount of philosophy in the linguistics Mphil @ Cambridge?
@gltd6832 жыл бұрын
@@EwaHannaHenderson Hi. I have just received offer from Cambridge. I notice that many lectures in the Michaelmas term, like computational linguistics, extend to the Lent term as well. But we are only allowed to attend lectures in the Michaelmas term. Does this mean we just attend the Michaelmas part of them?

Unfortunately, I wouldn’t know. The best advice I have is to look up the course on the university website! 😊

Hi! I am also a history student and currently writing a research proposal for 2-year MPhil programme application. Which part of an RP do you think is the most important?
@EwaHannaHenderson3 жыл бұрын
Hi! 🌸 To be honest, the whole RP is really important. If I have to pick the most important part though, I’d probably say the section where you outline how your work will impact the field and subsequently why your work is important. At the end of the day, the university wants you to make a contribution to your field. 😍
