Jeremy Clarkson is no stranger to controversy. Following the success of the Amazon series, his farm shop near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire welcomes thousands of visitors from around the world, much to the frustration of many locals. But today the site also hosted a planning inspector, as the row over what’s been going on a Diddly Squat rages on.

It's hard to understand why a local council can be so ignorant. This little shop is a lifeline for local farmers produce and probably brings a lot of tourist dollars to the area. Jeremy deserves a medal for perseverance !

The farm is also located in an AONB and there are a host of planning rules associated with these to keep it looking rural. The Council will be elected by local people and I suspect many are irritated by Clarkson’s attitude. The programme was edited to make out the Council as being inflexible but that makes great tv. I get the contribution that the farm makes to the local economy but I also notice there are too many visitors to the farm shop and it causes all sorts of traffic problems for a rural area. How big do you make the car park to get the cars off the road without turning the area into a giant car park which would be contrary to an AONB ? I get that Clarkson needs to make a living and there probably wouldn’t a problem had it not been his farm shop. Not sure how you solve this.

Now at the same time I completely agree with alot of what clarkson is trying to do. For example the coalition between local farmers selling there produce in his farm shop/restaurant. Brings in alot of money locally, not just for clarkson as people will inevitably go to other shops passing through etc. I think the local councill are of the opinion they dont want 'their' area to change. Also sorry for wrong grammar I struggle with that sort of thing.
@MrJordanwain

@@thomasbernard280 I completely understand what you are saying and I agree to an extent and I think Jeremy is thinking along those lines too with trying to put in an appropriate car park to get the vehicles off the road. If he had the car park he could operate a ticket style booking service to control the flow of people throughout the day and monitor the comings and goings better than people rocking up at the side of the road and walking in. I don’t know if he expected the shop to be as popular as it is and for a sustained period either. Regardless I think he is trying to improve the situation but I feel there are members of his community that would rather he was enforced to close.

There is a vendetta against all of us and its now been going on since pre 1973. It gained momentum after the Event201 show in 2019, the aim is Agenda 2030. My Teacher mentioned Agenda 2030 and the rush to Babylon in our leaving school speech of 73. The debt based system could only run for so long before it would be overloaded with debt. Then they will pop up with a new system which will be even more in their favour. The Dollar will lose it's position and the West will implode. Expect War, and the loss of your pensions. We thanked him sarcastically. They don't want us using cash or driving cars or eating meat. They don't even like personal ownership of anything. Unless he starts farming bugs, the whole idea could be doomed.

Such a great example of small minded councils in the UK given a little power. Obstructing value adding commerce to the area. Think of where else these farm customers may also be spending money. The local village shop, pub, petrol station etc…. Think of the impact if the farm can not diversify and has to close because farming no longer covers the bills? Now what happens if it’s 3 or 4 farms in the area as government grants end.

it won't though, if you give it some logical thought. Put in a car park that holds 500 cars - more than enough for your average farm shop. But what happens when it's full, this isn't going to stop people from turning up and finding somewhere else to park - like on the roadside verges. Yes, allow the car park, but while it's this popular it's not going to put an end to the problem or the argument I'm afraid.

@@Brs-od8mx did I say that? No. I'm simply reasoning that the car park is unlikely to solve the problems that the locals are banging on about. The planned car park is for how many spaces? The planning application is for a temporary change of use of agricultural land to provide a car park of 60x32 metres. It's temporary and the plans say it will be compacted limestone chippings so no white lines - so how many cars will fit in that space? According to the the Diddly Squat planning application, there will be a total of 70 spaces (including the 10 existing spaces). Take a look at videos down that road, there way more than 70 cars thus where are the rest going to go? I reiterate that I am not opposed to the car park - just pointing out it's unlikely to remove the problem entirely.

I wonder if Oxfordshire Councils decisions to refuse permission are more about the personal convictions of individual members of the Council, after all they are completely against meat and meat production hence the reason that they have just voted unanimously to only have vegan food at all Council functions etc. The refusal has nothing to do with planning law and everything to do with the personal ideology of the Councillors themselves. I am pretty sure that the independent planning inspector will see straight through the refusal decision and he will apply common sense planning law that allows flexibility within AOONB for farmers to be able to diversify and keep their farms viable as a business.

The council are jerks. They've created this mess by not allowing a parking area on Clarkson's own land. Embrace the success of the shop and thr whole area will benefit. Why do I feel I can say this? I'm a Vermonter. and I know first hand how important tourism is.

these villagers and councillors need to get of there high horse and grant permission , 1 to ease the parking situation , 2 it will bring a vast amount of money to the area, and 3 we need the next season of C/F asap lol

"We are fed up of your shop causing congestion and road damage because of your shop having too small of a car park, Mr. Clarkson!" "Okay then, here's an application for planning permission to expand the current car park to help alleviate the issue" "Are you insane?! Why would you need that?" The council baffles me.

Is there anything worse than local councils who dont support local businesses and recognise that in these trying times businesses need to diversify to survive? And Jeremy Clarkson's wealth and not needing to farm has feck all to do with the farm itself which is a business and valuable asset to the area.

Support is the absolute answer in a world of “you can’t do that” the farm shop and produce by the farmers is the way forward, thanks to people like this even though it maybe just a tourist trap, but it’s giving an alternative to supermarket’s.

It’s appalling all the negativity and barriers to doing good in Britain. Any sensible council or town administration would look to encourage and help a viable business ensuring it met with the regulations. He brings in loads of visitors, other businesses could capitalize on that, hotels, shops, cafes, petrol stations etc. that’s all money that will help his local area. Is anyone doing anything to build on that, or is that a story that will never be told?

The council should be focusing on reasonable compromise. Have the suggested alternatives? How about creating a co-op restaurant in town where there is parking so the farmers can feature their products on a menu and allow Jeremy to be a promotor?

I am surprised the little shop can cope with all the demand daily. Can they introduce a park and ride system and or by appointment only? To limit the amount of daily traffic to the area. Then that would be a condition (s) on allowing the lambing barn to be an eatery.

Park and ride are you serious are you insane? The whole point of cars is that the car takes you to where you want to go not buses. So what are you saying really, lets BUILD A CAR PARK a few miles away and then get 3 or 4 buses running up and down the small roads every 15 minutes whether they are full to the brim or have 2 people on them. All because they won't let him BUILD A CAR PARK.

One last thing even our local Farmshops have hat, bags, mugs, etc for sale with Farm logo on it here in the U.S. So I dont see why you board does not up date itself on that rule. It part of Eco Farm Tourism like doing wedding or extremely controlled RV camping for travelers for a donation ( normally buying something small and economical. One case a bag of chips for $25.00). Controlled RV camping is called Harvest Host it's very short term camping for people to get a quick rest before moving on.

Jeramy is doing and amazing job and the council should be supporting him he wanted the do a car park they refused he is helping support the local community lets see how busy the local shops and pubs and cafes are. Then say if the farm was not bringing in the tourists the village would not be thriving as it is, support him 🙏

Many wealthy individuals move to the Cotswolds for the peace and quiet and lack of development. They likely don't care about farmers but tolerate them as they keep their land as land. Wealthy people also tend to have influence or indeed positions of influence, so is it any wonder that someone bringing in lots of people and associated traffic to such an area is to be discouraged.
