An Introduction to Italian Altarpieces: Devotion by Design | National Gallery

Explore the elements of an altarpiece and discover the history behind these devotional objects in a visit to the National Gallery, London and Florence, Italy. And we go behind the scenes in our conservation studio to show you how altarpieces were made by craftspeople and artists.
'Devotion by Design' (6 July -2 October 2011) was part of a series of summer exhibitions drawn from the National Gallery's permanent collection. It focused on Italian altarpieces ranging from the 13th century to the end of the 15th century.
This exhibition of over 40 works investigates the original functions and locations, as well as formal, stylistic and typological developments of altarpieces, drawing on the wealth of scientific examination and scholarly study undertaken in this field over the past 30 years.

2:20 The altar is also the symbol of the altar in the Old Testament where the sacrifices were offered to God. The Altar in the Church is the place where the ultimate Sacrifice of the Christ, "the Lamb of God" is offered for our salvation ..

Actually, it is good for them to be seen outside of religious settings. I read a testimony of a Jew who became a Christian while meditating in a Buddhist enclave. He was trying to find unity (nimbutsu) between the sufferings of Christ and peaceful Buddha. Images of Christ seen on his family trips of Europe were part of what brought his "enlightenment" that Jesus Christ actually was the Messiah and Savior of all who ask.
