Macro photography allows you to explore and share worlds you never knew existed - however, it’s often viewed as complicated and a bit overwhelming. But, macro photography doesn’t need to be so daunting and it can really be quite a lot of fun - in this video I’ll cover the basics so that you can get outside and start enjoying macro photography. #Macro #Photography #Tutorial

It’s a strong message at the end to respect the nature even the smallest things. Nowadays, many people crossed the line just to get what they wanted.

Thanks @Nicholas Wu - I often work alongside various academics and I'm my experience - a photographer will never earn their respect unless they inturn respect the subject or topic of interest. Which I believe is completely fair. Thanks for the great feedback - really appreciate it. 😃😃😃

I concur with your last statement. Its important to respect the creatures we want to photograph. Ultimately, if we can't do things with disturbing the natural habitat, and heaven forbid that there are photographers who would put insects in fridges just so they can take photos, its immoral

Thank you for a great video, especially in regards to your final segment on ethics. It drives me nuts when people have animals in studios, move them around for a picture, or just show them general disrespect. It sometimes feels like people just don’t care. It’s refreshing to see other people who want to share the wonders of small creatures while treating them as real individuals that matter and have emotions.

The hardest part for outdoor macro-photography is lighting! Natural light isn't enough for some fields. I do think that the reason people catch animals/insects in studio. Anyway I love shot outdoor.

Well, I'm three minutes into the video too, and I'm debating weather I should continue watching or not, as I suspect this will be a waste of time. This is the umpteenth vid I've watched where the creator tries to explain magnification ratios, but fails to mention how the distance between subject and camera affects the image size on the sensor.

I love your video and most of the instruction throughout. In particular, the ending. This is where you addressed the macro world and surrounding environment. Tiny critters deserve to live in peace just as much as any human. Okay, let me get back to on that human part later. As I was attempting to say, I was taught photography by my grandpa (nearly 60 yrs in the biz, sshhh!), and he had one very important point. While it addresses, fashion, portrait, model, glamour, etc. it also serves well here. His point: If something's in your way, MOVE THE PHOTOGRAPHER, not the model or your props! Hope to see more. Be safe, do well. ~Alexa Shaw

Your discussion of ethics is absolutely invaluable. Thank you for addressing the matter. Yesterday, I encountered an ethical matter while practicing photography at a park. Some people were throwing bread into a stream to get the fish make themselves vulnerable while a heron was hunting for prey. I felt very conflicted about taking photos of the scene after that. Thanks for leaving us with many 'thoughts' on the ethical part as well as the photographic Neil! Living here on the mainland across from you, we have a large world of locations of which we can enter the forest with similar shots! Appreciate your cancer and important messages on 'light' as well, giving us a simplified way to understand your explanation!

I especially like the last comment about ethic and respecting environment...in so many other intros/tutorials/guides people say that spray bottle of water is essential, same for "clearing surrounding" with scissors, things which I never fully agreed...will the picture be more stunning, many times yes, but in the end it is most important to not harm the subject and its habitat. IMHO macro as well as any other kind of wildlife photographers should follow the rule of minimal to possibly no impact. Many times grass blades, small branches etc. can be gently bent out of frame with a little bit of effort and if they can't then one should change their own position, try different framing or angle...if that's not possible, well world will not end and there might be many more better occasions to take a shot in few minutes or next time...and if someone really need the droplets on the spiders, lizard or frog...get up earlier, the light will also be better ;)

Many thanks @Ars3nicGinger 👍 It's really nice the hear that some many others share the same line of thinking - hope as the issue is talked about more openly, it will become less of a problem. 😃😃😃

I have sprayed geckos many a times for a better picture. I've done most my work in desserts and I can promise you, any lizard I have done it on has only been thankful to get some extra water. (Just make sure it isn't chlorinated). If a single straw of grass in the way, I can also promise you, moving your entire body to a new position (especially if you are laying flat, as you often need to) will only disturb the micro habitat more than just pulling out that one straw. Saying that you shouldn't touch the environment, put instead just move yourself and stop being lazy is all fine and dandy, but you also have to think for a bit and consider if it really makes sense.

Wow, you covered nearly everything I could think of! I had been wondering about ethics when I was watching, and wondered how much of an issue it was. I'm glad this is a thing people take seriously. Being able to highlight nature, but destroy a creatures habitat in the process, is not the kind of approach I wish to take. I am interested to know, you mentioned the downsides to extension tubes, but did you cover diopters (maybe I missed it)? I plan on using both, since I can't really afford good glass. I'd be interested to see some more content about low cost/no cost alternatives, like the cereal box setup you showed.
@neilfisher
@neilfisher 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks @Sawta 👍 Happy to hear that you found it helpful and share the same respect for tiny macro subjects. Regardless whether you're adding extension tubes or diopters, or both, to a non-macro, you'll not likely end up with a magnification anywhere near 1:1. Adding multiple extension tubes reduces light quite significantly and a diopter alone really doesn't change magnification all that much.

Neil, I’m just considering macro and found this video amazingly easy to understand. Hopefully you haven’t stopped making videos. Your teaching stile is succinct and informative. I shoot wildlife with a Canon R5, 100-500 zoom. I realize there is no 500mm F4 in my future! Macro is financially accessible and I’ve always loved close up photography. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, hope to see more! Totally agree on the ethics comments!

@KELLMAR915 your situation very similar to mine. Macro photography is significantly more affordable and so far, has been just as enjoyable 😃😃😃
