this horizontal compression happened in eastern Europe too, and even in Cyrillic's. some of the calligraphy is just extreamly tall and narrow

They compressed the script because vellum is difficult and time consuming to make and very expensive.

The reason of compression is economic. Mediaeval script was an expensive luxury item. Simplest prayer book without decorations was worth five oxen.
