Thank you for choosing Ivo Pogorelichs interpretation. GOAT 🐐

Brilliant analysis. I’ve been captivated by this piece for many years. I’ve heard hundreds of interpretations by the greatest pianists. It never ceases to go directly to my soul. It evokes magic, vastness, awe, cleverness, and goes to the essence of existence itself. Ravel does that for me. Whether Rhapsodie Espagnole, Gaspard de la Nuit, Sonatiine, or the brilliant Daphnis et Chloe, Ravel does something to me that no other composer can. It’s hard to put into words. But thank God this brilliant musician did live and produce an oeuvre which is unique, and each piece he wrote is a precisely polished jewel. Definitely an example of quality over quantity, IMHO. Thanks for your post. Much enjoyed!

Ravel's music is one of the things that make me grateful to be alive on Earth. His music is the sound of the new and wondrous even today.

Best musical analysis I have seen on KZbin. It's got it all. Harmony, melody, form, poetic meaning, an attempt to penetrate the composer's thoughts. This left me in tears.

Ok I think this is what’s happening harmonically 9:26 The melody is actually in B major. The right hand alternates between the tonics C# and A, which happens to be two steps to the left and to the right of B, on the circle of fifths. So Ondine’s world and the guy’s are four fifths apart harmonically, ie far, but they both meet in the middle at B, while we can still hear their respective worlds/original tonics as the right hand. So the melody is actually them both, her calling first two notes and him replying the three.

Wow... I watched it all, lovingly. I just wish that my music theory was up to following it, but I'm still totally hooked on Gaspard as much as ever. Thank you so much for this study, which has been a labour of love. The greatest piece ever written for the piano, my opinion and I'll stick to it.

Wow. What a great spot-on analysis of this work, my favorite of all Ravel’s composition. Fantastic analytical job for a fantastic artistic creation. How Ravel came up with the musical formula to create. these sounds is beyond my humbly human comprehension.

You deserve an award for this spectacular analysis video! This is absolutely my favorite piece of all time. I do want to point out though, at 25:41, measure 70 and 71 is a G#7 flat 5 chord, which is different than the previous two measures. Thank you so much for creating this video! I gained plenty of new insights from this.

Wow. Absolutely brilliant, I would love to see more analysis videos, count me subscribed. Side note, is it not frustrating to look at the sheet music and thinking about the representation of ondine dissapearing without a trace and Ravel having written ''sans ralentir'', and still the pianist slows down giving us a peaceful ending in the tonic...

Fascinating analysis. Although, I often find that this level of theoretical analysis is akin to someone trying to understanding the brilliance of a painting by analyzing the chemical structure of the pigments used. It reaches a point at which the emotional motivations and intellectual inspirations of the creator are obliterated by compositional reasoning. Like dissecting a human body to try and find the soul. As someone who both composes and paints, I tend to believe that inspiration arrives without a theoretical agenda, and over time and experimentation, is refined, distilled, and grounded within theory. Most music theorists I know tend to think backwards. They take it apart and try to rebuild it, not realizing that the creation evolved organically, instead of rationally.

You shouldn't interpret the opening chord as a dominant. The opening is modal. It is in the mode of C# mixolydian b6, which is the classic mode for major-minor mixture, and is frequently used even by Rachmaninov.
