I grew up in Murray Bridge and remember old scary af Bunyip and it’s baby. My Grandpa had an electrical business in Murray Bridge back in the 70s and they wired up the original Bunyip. Mum even recalls her older brothers who worked for the business recording the sounds by screaming down a piece of pipe while hitting it with sticks. Bunyip was a big part of life in MB in the 90s. My year two class entered a float in a “Don’t muck up the Murray (river)” parade (circa 1991). We dressed up as little bunyips and yelled threats from the back of a flat bed truck to the townspeople about not polluting the river. We also had an awesome aboriginal teacher at school who would tell us Dream Time stores and how the legend of the bunyip was created to scare children away from the river so they wouldn’t drown. Also, back in our day it was “Bazza the Bunyip”.

Fantastic stuff! I'm so glad you told this story, especially re how the sounds were recorded . I grew up nearby and knew the bunyip well during my childhood in the 70s. I'm a fan (?) of the original way creepier bunyip. It was one of the scariest and funnest and stupidest things when I was a kid and we were all so fascinated by it. Years later, my husband and I took our daughter to see it, and she was not so enthusiastic. Eeeep. She is grown now, but a few years ago, she told me she has......submechanophopbia. Damn. I still hatelove that bunyip though :)

I think this was in 1982-83 when the Bunyip looked a little more intimidating 😅. I live here in Murray Bridge now and the new Bunyip is definitely not scarey looking at all. I'm glad they still have it here as it brings back fond memories of me and my bro when we were little.

As someone that is a fnaf geek, I haven't been that afraid of robot lately, and I do not have submechanophobia. These things do disturb me, just not Bertha. I think that she has been through a lot and deserves retirement from performing. Being displayed is a different story. But seeing this vid really makes me feel bad for her, as he didn't go into what it must've been like for Bertha. She was destroyed, unable to do anything about it, and her own baby was taken from her. (Yes Bertha has a soul.) Please let me know if anyone feels the same way.

Hiya! I’m a Ngarrindjerri person, and the Mulyawonk (Bunyip) is part of my people’s dreaming stories! Basically, the first mulyawonk was a guy who was being greedy and fishing too much and not listening to his elders, so they turned him into this horrible beast. The mulyawonk will eat you if you fish too much and don’t listen to your elders! The “bunyip” was built to tell passers-by and young Ngarrindjeri people the story of the mulyawonk, to keep them safe and away from the water and to respect the fish of the Murray River. So as usual, all the cool and interesting things in Australia come from aboriginal people ✌🏽✌🏽✌🏽
@cringetrender4 жыл бұрын
@Idk Idk in Australia, we don’t consider blood purity to be a factor in aboriginality. There’s a popular metaphor here - doesn’t matter how much milk you put in; it’s still tea. So yeah, I’m very white-passing, but I’m not any less aboriginal for it.

@lapelcelery424 жыл бұрын
It was almost the same as the new one, but the roar was longer and louder. The basically seemed to sanitise it when they brought the new one in. As a kid it was really terrifying, partly because when I was able to see it in the mid 90s, it was over twenty years old and had rotted quite a lot to get into the condition that you see in the photos in this video.
