Thilafushi, aka Trash Island of the Maldives, is a man-made island that's become a symbol of our global waste crisis. Created in 1992 to solve Malé's waste problem, it now receives 772 tons of garbage daily and is growing by one square meter every day.
This artificial island spans 124 acres and houses an estimated 39 million tonnes of waste debris. Tourists, generating 15.9 pounds of trash daily compared to locals' 6.2 pounds, significantly contribute to this waste.
Thilafushi's environmental impact is severe. Toxic fires from methane buildup affect nearby islands, escaped waste threatens marine life, and migrant workers face serious health risks and are underpaid.
While the Maldivian government has launched 'Magey Saafu Raajje' (My Clean Maldives) to establish waste management centers across 100 islands by 2024, is it enough to combat decades of accumulated waste?
This documentary exposes the hidden costs of paradise and the urgent need for sustainable waste management solutions.
Join us in reimagining waste management and environmental responsibility. Together, we can transform places like Thilafushi and create a cleaner, more sustainable future for paradise destinations worldwide.
