The way I see it, CGI looks real but feels fake, while stop motion looks fake but feels real. There’s an actual physical object on film, and that element alone is what makes it superior.

There's just something about miniatures and background paintings that is, as yet, still lacking in most CGI effects. Maybe part of the magic is that hand-crafted effects aren't so slick and perfect as CGI tries to be, which to me often looks and feels cartoonish. There is a feel, a weight, something I just can't find the words for, which is more like the real world with paintings and miniatures.

The pit scene where the men are attacked by giant insects is from the 1933 King Kong movie. It was cut out. after a test audience viewed it, and afterwards couldn't stop talking about it. So the scene was replaced with Kong shaking the men off the giant log, into the pit then dropping the log. I guess that scene wasn't as shocking. It was 1933.

Not that I don’t totally adore Ray Harryhausen and Willis O’Brien as much as the next stop motion fan. But I think this could’ve been appropriately renamed ode to action and horror film stop motion :-) Seems to be a significant lack of children entertainment LOL and there’s so many wonderful properties like Gumby, Wallace and Gromit, and of course the full length animated features like Coraline, nightmare before Christmas, etc. I’m sure Ray would love to know that he inspired puppet master and Ghostbusters! But editing-wise, great collection!

I watched these as a child. Today I am a 67 year old woman and still love stop action movies. Harryhausen was the master.

Watching this makes me wonder.... "How come the Japanese never used technology like this in their monster movies? "

They wanted to, especially for Godzilla, but it was just about time, so to make it more quick, they made suits. However, they are a few Stop-Motion shots in some Godzilla Movies.

Awesome...apparently the tick monster and the worm at 2:15 were the stop motion models used in the lost spider pit sequence in king Kong. They did get some screen time in the black scorpion.

People say old animation movies are crap but I like them the puppets are just out standing there works of art and the thing I love about animation is that you can let your imagination run free

I remember and movie called The Golden Child that was stop motion. With the dancing can of coke. One of the best uses. Also I think there was some used in Critters?.. Interesting comparison between Robocop 2 and Terminator 2. RoboCop 2 kinda the last blockbuster live action movie to use it to that extent. Terminator 2 was kinda the beginning of CGI to be used in full extent. Although it had been experimented with before. History between both movies there. Robocop 2 used it really well.
