An (Official) Introduction to Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's Masterwork Built Above a Waterfall

Fallingwater is a house designed in 1935 by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) for the Kaufmann family, owners of Pittsburgh’s largest department store. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater is one of his most widely acclaimed works and best exemplifies his philosophy of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature.
Fallingwater is located in the mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania, also known as the Laurel Highlands, in Mill Run, Fayette County, which is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
Wright designed Fallingwater to rise above the waterfall over which it is built. Local craftsmen quarried native sandstone and other materials from the property and completed the construction of the main house, guest house and service wing in 1939.
Fallingwater is the only major Wright work to come into the public domain with its setting, artwork and original Wright-designed furnishings intact.

I read about Fallingwater in my "Weekly Reader" in second grade. Immediately, I wanted to see it in person. It inspired in me a lifelong love of Frank Lloyd Wright's archetechtural style. Finally, after more than 6 decades, my chance presented itself. Our youngest son, an Army Major at the time, was stationed in Maryland. Fallingwater was only a 2-hour drive from his house. What a great day we had when, on one of our fall visits with our son's family, we all made that drive. Fallingwater was everything I imagined and I thoroughly enjoyed the hours spent wandering all over the property....on the outside tour. I hope to return to Fallingwater one more time to tour the fascinating interior of the iconic house.

My family and I just stopped here on our way home from Niagara Falls. It is such a beautiful place and an architectural masterpiece. My wife is going back to school to begin an architectural design program at our local tech school, and she wanted to stop by for some inspiration. Boy, does this place offer it! Thanks to everyone involved in the upkeep and restoration of Fallingwater.
