It turns out that final bone is exactly where I don't want it to be. Right in the middle of the slime area.

Why are slimes so strong in this game? Is it just flipping the trope of them being weak on its head?

I think it's mostly that the poison condition they bestow never seems to end. It might also be to reinforce the impression that we're still pretty low level and this isn't a high powered game but a much more realistic one.
