Today I'm putting a 25 year old film lens on a digital camera, does it work? and if so how good is it in the woodland. the lens is a Nikon 28-80mm 3.5-5.6D you may be surprised!

Good clarity and colour from an old lens certainly a forgotten gem.

I had this lens together with my Nikon F80 as a kit. Bought a 70-300 mm f4-5.6G at the same time. I'm still using both of these lenses today on my Nikon D600 that I bought second hand a few months ago. They still serve well despite their age.

Thanks for watching yes I'm really impressed with the 28-80 and will certainly keep it in my kit bag and I'm going to check out the 70-300 you mentioned so thank you for that. Hope you had a great weekend.

@@WoodlandColoursPhotograp-kt5fc I had a great weekend, thanks. Good luck searching for that second lens. I used it last week to take pictures from a couple of bluetits flying in and out of their nest to feed their juveniles. At 300 mm the results were better than I expected, since there isn't any vibration reduction in the lens and I didn't bring my tripod. Just took the highest shutter speed to eliminate any blur from moving the camera and to freeze the birds in their flight. I've always used the 28-80 more often, but the 70-300 has its advantages in certain situations.

Nice video Dan, I also use 20 to 24 year old Canon 35mm EF zooms on my Canon 200D, and I agree these back in the day kit lenses are as sharp as a box of tacks. I don't have any focus hunting issues. And I paid a similar price as you did. I love using them. Thanks Dan. Regards Rob (new subscriber)

Thanks Rob, they seemed to know how to make lenses back in the day I'm so glad I found this one.

Fascinating experiment with this lens. It really does well. Does it work with the camera autofocus or do you manual focus the photo?

Thank you Dan on D800, D600 and possibly the D850 it will autofocus and does a great job as for newer camer bodies I really don't know it's the honest answer.😊😊

Excellent as always Dan, certainly a bargain of a lens, does it have weather sealing mate?

I don't think any camera or lens is truly weather unless you put them in an airtight container, humidity will still get past any of those rubber gaskets. I'd use a bag over the camera whatever make it was if it was raining.

Thanks for the video, Dan. I could argue that, in today's world, this is a lens for an EXPERT photographer. I say that because in today's world, it seems like everyone uses an ultra-shallow depth of field in lieu of actual composition and photographic "depth." I would love it if more photographers used a deeper depth of field and made ALL parts of the frame matter.

Thank you for watching and commenting. I'd probably agree with you it is nice to see sharpness across the frame on a print with a good composition and I found this lens absolutely amazing especially from the price point.

Great video Dan, nice sharp images mate. Always good to check out old lenses, I brought an old macro lens for 60 quid. Not used it yet but will soon. Take care. Shawn

Nice images mate - is that Hitch Wood by any chance? Lots of those older lenses are still really good. I have a number of Pentax M series lenses which perform really well on film and digital and I got them at a similar price point.

Thanks for watching yes it is is Hitchwood I feel like ive practically lived there the last month 😊 yeah, it seems some of these old lenses can more than hold their own against modern lenses these days.

@@WoodlandColoursPhotograp-kt5fc Oh that was a good guess - I don't blame you, it looks amazing there! It was on my list this year to go but there but ended up having to go to a more local place which wasn't as good.

@@WoodlandColoursPhotograp-kt5fc I went to a place just outside Saffron Walden called Howe Wood, technically it's private and part of Audley End Estate but I couldn't resist hopping over the fence and having a quick look - a bit of a last minute thing.
