The six counties of the province of Ulster, also known as "Northern Ireland", remained under British rule (some would say British _occupation_). Thus began what has been called "the Troubles". There was also a religious overtone to it, with the Irish republicans being mostly Catholic and those favoring the British being mostly Protestant.
