An overly in-depth *Stranger Things* ship ranking ~ RANK & RANT SERIES ~

Hello all! Welcome to the first segment of an ongoing series of Rank & Rant! Today, I'm unnecessarily deep-diving into Stranger Things ships while simultaneously ranking them to my own curated tier list because obviously I'm hyper-fixating. I PROMISE this will be the last Stranger Things vid before moving on to new and exciting things! It's a different type of vid, but I hope you enjoy it just the same.

With Nancy and Jonathan, I think a big problem with the relationship (and I don't mean just romantically) is that it survives on trauma and the world being in peril. Between seasons 1 and 2, they drifted apart until Nancy was on her crusade to take down Hawkin's Lab. Season 3, their relationship slowly headed falling apart until they realised (or rather Jonathan came around to it) that something bad was going on. And in season 4, they once again drift apart when things are calm or when they're away from one another. A lot of it comes from Jonathan's personality - he is too introverted, not the type to naturally want to bring too much attention to himself, and (this is the biggie) will always put his family and especially his brother first. The last part probably stems from accumulated guilt over what happened to Will in season 1, and to a lesser degree not being there for him once again until it was almost too late, in season 2.

i completely agree. i think Nancy knows what kind of life she wants and is too independent to be stuck with either Jonathan or Steve. while I’d be happy with her ending up with either of them, I think the best thing would be for her to be on her own

I definitely wouldn't mind a Byler analysis video if you ever made one. Personally, when this season came out(and season 3), I was a bit iffy on Mike. But I think taking a few steps back to analyze some of his behavior has really made me ship them more than ever. And it's so strange to me. The fandom loves analysis when it comes to Max, Steve, Dustin, Eddie, Papa, etc. And yet for some reason, whenever it comes to Mike, people almost seem obsessed with saying that there isn't anything going on beneath the surface. Other characters can have complex motives and scenes. But with Mike, everyone seems so content with only looking at him from a surface level angle. And so I'll continue making my Byler analysis, even if people like to pretend they're the third Duffer brother and they know all about what they have planned for Mike. Mike has a desire to feel needed. He's looking for a place to belong. That's what he told Will in the van. He was worried she wouldn't need him anymore. In fact, the script of that scene recently was released and there's a cut line from Mike where he essentially states that he saw in El's eyes that she didn't really love/need him anymore. Which is why I think that moment of Will telling Mike that "El" will always need him even more sweet. And I think that's another reason Mike was acting so strange with Will at the beginning of the season. He's always been Will's protector. Mike has always felt needed because of him. So when there's a lack of communication and he reads in El's letter that Will might have a crush on a "girl", he might be thinking that Will has outgrown him. That he doesn't need him anymore. And if that were true, it would explain why Mike apologized to Will about being self-pitying in episode 4. He'd been thinking about all these awful scenarios about how Will has moved on that he actually started to believe them. Instead of actually paying attention to his actions.

In terms of Steve, based on his character progression, I strongly feel that his end game is that he doesn't end up with anybody. Not because I don't want his character to have a happy ending but rather that's the only way I can see it happening in a way that feels complete. With each season, he is always chasing after a romantic partner and he seems to see this as the only way for him to find purpose and satisfaction. As such, I suspect that his character arc will end with Steve learning to be happy and find value in himself without feeling the need of having someone else to help him feel complete. Only _then_ do I see him ever finding a partner that works out for him.

@@everybodylovesrae_ I have a theory.... by the end of the show, either Hopper or Steve will die. They both fill the "protector" archetype; with Steve for the main kids and Hopper for the town as a whole. Either, Steve will die; marking how the kids aren't kids anymore, no longer in need of protecting, and needing to fend for themselves. Or, Hopper will die with Steve finding his place by taking on Hopper's role as town protector... and on the road to becoming the new chief? If so, I suspect we might see Hopper and Steve teaming up as the odd couple next season (which would be a nice change from Hopper-Joyce, Steve-Dustin, and Steve-Robin pairings). I feel there would be an interesting dynamic between them if they get matched up for next season.

People call Byler shippers insane but honestly, I didn’t become a Byler shipper until the Byler shippers started to point out Mike’s “Internalised homophobia” in season 4 and I can definitely see it from my point of view. I lost interest in Mileven when I finished season 4 because their relationship feels so forced now and compared to the rest of the relationships in the show, Mileven is the weakest one. I don’t care if Byler doesn’t happen in season 5 because I know I’m setting myself up for disappointment and I’m not gonna start crying about “Queerbaiting.” All I want is Will to find a boyfriend and be happy for ones because that’s all that matters to me in the end.

I agree! I was a pretty casual viewer and didn't even consider byler until the end of s4, pretty much writing it off as completely unrequited. Ive never been a big fan of the romance on this show(none of the canon ships really entice me other than lumax and jancy in season 2) so I didn't really care about mileven as a couple(probably because I love El but I thought mike in season 3 just became a mini hopper who was another character I feel s3 butchered) but after finishing s4 I honestly felt like byler just.. made sense? El learned she's neither a superhero or a monster and mike is over here calling her exactly that, a superhero. I think for el's s5 arc she's probably going to break this news to mike and break up with him, giving him a bit of a reality check, and her focus would be her love for max and the love for her found family and for Mike it would be that he doesn't need to be someone's savior or be "useful" to deserve love. They all have some growing up to do and that's why I think a time jump is necessary; none of these kids are ready for a relationship, not just El at the moment. We've seen that Mike appreciates and wants the love that will has for him, which is just loving him for him, nerdiness and all, and after the timeskip I think them getting together would be satisfying. This ended up being pretty long but whatever lol

@@sasha9465 you see, here’s the biggest problem with Byler. The show is full of Casual Viewers and dare I say, homophobic straight people who only see Mike and Eleven as the endgame couple. That’s the biggest reason why I think Byler won’t happen because the duffers don’t want to lose viewers. However…. Season 5 is the last season so it wouldn’t even matter if they lose viewers…… 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Looking back now I can definitely see how bylers been built up since season 1 but, even as a gay person, I didnt see it when I first watched because I just thought any romantic tension wouldn't be intentional I guess lol. Thankfully, the duffers have said that they won't be looking at what the viewers "want" or think will happen per se and like you said, it's the final season so it's not like they have much to lose lol. Idk how the political landscape is gonna be in 2 years but hopefully it's a bit more positive for on screen gay rep

GIRL I LOVE THIS. your analysis of each ship was so in depth and interesting to hear, they all made so much sense and i resonated with all of them. i've been super into steddie lately, just as a fun comfort ship to read ao3 for, and i was really interested to see what your opinion on it would be. i agree 100% with how you explained it, on how they have so much potential even though there wasn't much canon evidence to back it up. personally i think eddie would be so good for steve, like his total opposite to balance him out. plus i'm just a sucker for 'the freak and the jock' trope. overall great video, i was entertained throughout the entire thing, and you're amazing at speaking.

Here's my take: Endgame for Nancy should be no one. I don't want her with Jonathan, especially after all of S4 was basically showing how dysfunctional they are in their LDR and that they have completely opposite goals in life. Nancy is a go-getter who wants to work and grow and show her skills, she is NOT sticking around in Hawkins, Indiana. She's gonna head off to Chicago or some other big city for sure. Jonathan and Steve meanwhile are both destined to live and die in the small towns they're placed in, that's the type of guys they are. Jonathan won't abandon his family (which is very reasonable considering how much horrible shit they've been through) and Steve is working shitjobs for high schoolers still. Yeah his dad could always give him control of the business at some point, but would Steve even be any good at that? Point being, Nancy is off to be a success story and neither of her love interests seem even half-way capable of catching up with her. Besides, Nancy has been in some form of relationship since Season 1. Give the girl a break and let her shine by herself. Jonathan can always find himself a nice stoner girl and Steve, Steve should find himself a Mormon if he wants 6 kids lol.

Agree. And I think the same for Eleven. Both Nancy and Eleven are strong female characters that don't need a love interest to drive them forward. Jonathan and Mike's character arcs are the weakest of all main characters. In the last two seasons they literally became the "boyfriend" character, so their existence is just to support the female character.

I actually agree! To a point. I don't think either presumptuous (Nancy will wanna be with me forever; Nancy will have six kids) fellow is fated to be stuck in town forever. Not that they can't change BUT Nancy isn't going to WAIT for them to finally wake up, come around when she's moving forward with her journalism career post-80's sexist era. She's got things to do in life. So did/does Max.

Great!! i agree with everything!! Only I shipped stancy based on this season UNTIL the kids thing and now that made me be like oh this seems to not go with the theme of the season about forced conformity. They just need if they did make them endgame to show why they deserve this. Not against it I just need them to tell me the vision in the show. So real for Byler opinions! I actually saw it in season 2 (I noticed they touched hands and it was super close up and I already knew Will is supposed to be gay so I was looking how they would represent this.) and so it's great to actually see it play out! I think it must be endgame because they surely wouldn't plan since the beginning for it just to be unrequited.

Me: a steadfast Stancy shipper knowing I’m about to get my heart broken by a strangers valid opinion *watches anyway* Fr tho I liked your rankings. I think you made sound arguments for everyone, especially for will/mike. Only thing I don’t really see is Jancy being endgame (and not just because I’m a stancy stan) I just think he was there at the right time and fit her needs at the moment. I think they worked very well together in s3, but I think they were more trauma bonded in s2. And I realize that they separated them in s4 so Steve could have more time with Nancy, but even when Jonathan is talking to Argyle about the college thing and his relationship in general he seems more upset at the prospect of having the confrontation with her more than the possible ending of their relationship. I’d honestly like Nancy to get out of the love triangle and experience singlehood in college. And if they were going to have her wind up with Steve or Jonathan I’d like it to be after she’s had time to be on her own.

I liked Mileven in season 1 and 2, I think they were really cute but in season 3, I started not to ship them for the things you said: they ditched their friends to be together alone (very emotionally dependant on each other); they did not see anything else. Also when they broke up, they were a little worried at first but then they were okay pretty fast. In season 4, he seemed more focused on whatever was happening to Will than Eleven: he noticed Will's bad mood in the roller mania but not Eleven's (it was clear she was lying) and he apologized to Will for the argument they had but he told Eleven that what she was saying was nonsense. Furthermore, Mike hugged everyone in that airport scene except Will. I have to say I knew Will had feelings from earlier seasons but from Mike's perspective I didn't think so. However, looking back, it makes sense from an internalised homophobia perpective. I really think they are pushing their ending, the last shot of the season was Eleven alone at the front and Mike and Will together behind her.

So I think she should have the space to do so without romance in the mix

I don't know what they are going to do with the whole Nancy-Steve-Jonathan triangle, but I agree with you wholeheartedly I wouldn't like Stancy endgame, I don't think they work well together and Steve is idolizing Nancy, rather than seeing who she is. That's why I would prefer her and Jonathan together because they know each other well and even though Jonathan made bad calls in season 4, he was aware of Nancy's way of thinking. They need to communicate better for the relationship to work. I'm also ok with her staying alone.

I absolutely loved reading this! Thank you for sharing your insight, it definitely made me think about some things too. Tbh Ronance is great and if, by some miracle, it were to happen, I'd be totally down, but yeah just as long as both of them are able to confide in people that are women/non-romantic at the same time. It'll be interesting to see how Robin and Vickie are in S5 cause you're right, we haven't really seen enough to fully judge it as is. And I totally agree with you about the comment Eddie makes about Nance - definitely could be projection. And lastly, thanks for having an open-mind about byler! Even if it doesn't change anything, I'm glad it at least got you thinking

Great analysis, insightful perspectives on these ships and generally with all of your content. Season 4 has made me obsessed w/ST. I'm still not over it mostly since I'm Lumax endgame and having to process and deal with all of that pain. I'm also Jopper and Jancy endgame with a strong interest in Byler analysis; it's so compelling. With Lucas and Will, someone said Will would've went to Lucas' game. That feels so accurate, so I definitely don't hate the ship. I agree with upwards 90%+ of your rankings. Thanks for sharing your ships!

Great Byler (?) analysis even if I thought I wouldn't agree off the bat (ah hell nah) but it actually makes sense in that lens, and I think it's smart to have it be in a fun overall list video versus a front center sole topic video where folks (not me..) might dive into regrettable rant responses without fully listening to the actual analysis.
