It's time to truly crack open the mysteries of the FNaF Lore, and solve the timeline once and for all. Don't worry, Scott Cawthon sent me his lore doc so you know it's real. Trust me. (this is a joke video please don't come for my kneecaps)

No... you should probably actually play DSaF 1-3! Those games have some crazy lore and they're very disconnected from a traditional FNaF timeline. If I was making a DSaF timeline I'd make an actual DSaF timeline that preferably uses its main characters and settings.
Henry Miller, Jack Kennedy, the Phone Guys, and Dave Miller are all very important characters with extremely different personalities than the mainline FNaF characters. Which, by the way... the name Dave Miller originated from the FNaF novels as an alias of William. Just thought you should know.

Fun fact: The reason William didn't die and doesn't feel pain in the Springtrap suit is that when the springlocks reset, it snapped his neck perfectly straight up. The sheer satisfaction from the act of chiropracting was greater than the pain of getting every possible atom in his body being broken, and thus, he lived.

My theory as to why the design is so different is this: after the fnaf 3 fire, the outer layer of the suit (the fur) detached from the inner layer of the suit, which is where the springlocks are housed. The fire resulted in the inner layer merging with William’s corpse, which somewhat explains the corpse being anatomically incorrect; it’s not his bone, it’s his corpse mummified by the inner layer of the Springtrap suit. William then wore the second springbonnie suit, the suit from into the pit, hence the drastic design change. That’s my theory.

They were created for "the twisted ones" ooftroop didn't make them up, and if anything they're actually weirder in cannon seeing as how they can show you all sorts of halluzinogenic stuff and may or may not cause physical effects too.

@aymor plays roblox Well... Ehm. In summary, it's never really explained. But let me explain anyway. Twisted Ones is both a novel and graphic novel, but the comic in general doesn't really explain shit, in the comic it's all just some sort of revenge plot, but at least it does have a fnaf kaiju fight where the original animatronics beat up the twisted ones while Springtrap flees, which is amazing. So going into the actual novel. The novel first shows us the animatronics, which are some sort of superpowered monsters with strange effects like acid skin. Then later on we're shown that actually, they're just endos with audio disks that cause people to see what they want them to see, and we're told that the original intent was to make people see amazing super appealing animatronics. Or as ooftroop put it, a beautiful golden bear with a voice like honey butter. Now, the novel does specify 2 things more. One, the twisted ones hunt kids for remnant and that's why they're now turning themselves into monsters to scare them. (Why they think scaring kids would make them easier to catch I don't know but I guess they give more remnant if scared like on Doctor Sleep? If so, the novel came first, lmao. Also, sometimes we see the animatronics affect physical things they really shouldn't have been able to if it was all just halluzinations, so we're not 100% sure wether the disks leave some kind of noise pollution causing those apparent effects, or the robots also have acid containers and stuff like that to leave those effects, or the audio disks actually are just straight up magic. Anyway, the other thing we're told is the basic reason behind Afton creating them: he was jealous of Henry because everyone liked Henry's animatronics better so he made the Twisted Ones specifically to be more appealing than the original FNAF characters...Yknow, same way in Ooftroops lore he is driven by his hatred for Foxy specifically. So I guess that is also cannon for real. So you may ask. Wait you said it's unexplained yet also explained it. How is that not explained? Well. Just try to fit reasoning to result. Afton started this planning to just make a better chuck-e-cheese. So, from there he somehow wound up making child-huntin, halluzinogenic, maybe reality-bending, surprisingly-intelligent furry robots. And the only apparent reason we have for that bit of sharkjumping is Afton's just plain crazy.
