I know every horror movie is based on a true story they only say that just to get people to watch the movie it's silly I'm a big genre fan but to have every movie be based on a true story is a bit much .

It is based on a true story. But it's based on the novel by Brent Monahan, which fictionalized the events. The Bell family was thought to have been cursed by their neighbor (whom was rumored to be a witch). They experienced haunting, poltergeist activity, and possessions. All of which can be explained by science, if you think about it. The events of Mr. Bell committing s.a. on his daughter isn't true (that we know of) because there's never been any documents saying as such! It happened in Tennessee. I'm from Tennessee, and I love listening, watching, or reading about any folklore from my home State!
