Thank you for sharing how difficult it is for you as an owner and trainer to be witness to any pain a horse may experience and to the death of a horse, it is a difficult aspect of human and animal relations. I think it's very important to have this kind of open dialogue about this subject.

Tilly was so lovely, sorry you lost him, but definitely better a day too early than one too late. A good phrase is ‘there are worse fates than death’. Death is not the worst thing that can happen to a horse, I’d say more referring to passing on an injured horse to uneducated or forceful hands 😞 💜

Thank you for the update. I’m glad to hear about your horse’s various progresses! Great to hear about Zora and Blondie.. Didi and Happy 3rd Birthday to little Indy! I can’t believe she’s 3! So sad to hear about Tillie, he was one of my personal favorites to watch. I can empathize with the feeling of letting them cross the rainbow bridge, such a gut-wrenching decision. Keep looking for signs, our loved ones souls are always with us. One of my favorite quotes, “It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.” Love and hugs to you Miri. Miri, thank you so much for sharing how you felt and all the things you struggled with around Tilly. My two most recent horses I have retired due to kissing spine and multiple complications and the both taught me so much. Luckily they are field sound and living a happy retired life however one aspect that makes me so sad about the horses nature is how little we understand them naturally. We are so removed from nature that we have to learn so much to come to understand them. How has Sue Dyson's research only recently been done and how have all these obvious signs been normalised! I also realised far too late how much I pushed my boys through pain while they kept offering more. I'm so grateful to them for teaching me and hope I can take this knowledge on to give my next horse a happy comfortable life! Thank you Tilly!

I say this every time but I so enjoy your videos, even though I don't have horses I still love them, so beautiful. I always feel like I learn something while watching your videos. I understand how you feel, I will never get over taking my dog to the vets the last time, so hard and never forgotten. I cried with you, but you have to remember you gave them all the best time while they were with you, I know they could not have had a better owner. You care so much for your animals and they get the best treatment available.

Am so very sorry about Tilly, condolences to you & George. How beautiful that you were blessed with such a comforting picture of those 3 precious souls at peace & no longer in pain. My riding days are over due to a car accident - as I watched your video I realised that I could relate to so much of Zora's and Blondies' issues🫣. Does Johannes treat humans? 😂 The difference in Zora after Johannes' treatment was clearly visible. I am waiiting for physiotherapy due to sudden deterioration - I can only hope I encounter a therapist of Johannes' calibre. I love your holistic approach to supporting your horses Miri - no other equestrian could or would do more than you for those stunning horses. 🤗❤

My dad has a very "farmer" attitude towards aging pets that I really struggled with, until I realized that he was doing for them what he genuinely strongly wants for himself- to go before [whatever pain] is unbearable. He was conscripted into the army in his country during his university years, and I think he probably saw some awful, slow and grisly deaths (he did a lot of scanning for land mines kind of work). Nowadays I think of it like this- you didn't "fail" as a caretaker by allowing your animal to die, death is an inevitable consequence of life- you only "fail" them if they die badly. Otherwise, while it will still hurt you don't need to feel like you didn't do enough ❤

Crying along with you, Miri over generous, kind, Tilly's passing out of pain. Making these decisions for our animals who are suffering and do not have a hope of improving and or only facing declining and increasing pain are very hard and painful for us. As one of your friend's said, though, better to make the decision before the animal crashes completely to the point where they can't get up are so obviously beyond their tolerance for pain is the right decision to take. I love your ways with your horses and how you are always trying to find ways to make their lives better and more comfortable. It was so nice to see you hacking with Blondie and Zora. Blondie looks so relaxed and so much happier now that she has someone helping her, listening to her, and completely arresting their expectations for her until health matters are improved for her. So many horses are so compliant and don't express themselves clearly. So as you say, Blondie had to learn to defend herself and communicate clearly to people that it does make her an excellent teacher. I'm so glad she found her way back to you and that your hard work and multiple approaches to solving her health problems have paid off for all the thinking and adjusting you made for Blondie to feel so much better in her body. You can see it all over her body and in her facial expressions.

You have served as such a model horse owner for me. So responsible and caring in all your decisions! You don’t know but you also have been validating the path I have been on with my own mare. Remarkably, just slightly after I have been there you have reported your successes with e.g, Warwick Schiller, R+ training, recognizing there is a reason she sometimes does not want to be touched. I have found it to be such a comfort to hear when you, a horsewomen I have so much respect for, have also been finding this new way of listening so helpful with your “clearly expressive” mare!

Ohhhh my dear I feel you when you talk what happend to Tilly. I had to send my boy ( also over the rainbow bridge (he had severe cancer). I know his big red ( chestnut) friend Esprit would have wait for him, now they are together. Johannes is absolute incredible, the way he treated Zora is wonderful, so happy your custom made saddle of HD will arrive soon so you can start riding her again. And then my/ our absolute fav of your herd Blondes, and there she showed us her fear of men, men did terrible things to her and she made that christal clear to us all. The moment she allowed Johannes to only touching her and give her a treat is amazing. More amazing that he could treat her beautiful troubled head and the releave she had after that. Like magic he. Haha absolute fan of the funny Blondes voiceover, love love love it. Those hoof boots are like chique mary jaynes, she wears them with pride. Lovely update Miri, thank you and have fun with your girls.💖🫶💖🇳🇱

I don't think anyone ever gets used to saying goodbye to our animals. Tilly had the best life with you and you did the best for him. As we know horses are prey animals to have spent thousands of years learning how to hide any sort of hurt and pain. The fact you recognised he was only looking ok on very strong medication shows how much discomfort/pain he was keeping hidden. They are the best and it is the hardest last act of love you can do. As upsetting as it is. I love that you had your dream of them all fit and healthy. I do believe their souls/spirits live on in the universe, just in a different plane from our world. ❤❤

Thanks for sharing. I'm crying with you. I know how you feel. I put down my 27 year old gelding ( which I had since he was 4) 7 years ago. He was bleeding from his sinus. The vet could have done surgery but I was counseled by a good friend ( who's an excellent horsewoman also) not to put him through that at his age. I will never get over this. I love your dream/vision of your horses. I believe in life after death and that we will be with the animals we loved. I love your videos and so wish I knew the things you teach when I had my horse. I love your training methods and knowledge of your horses bodies, etc. I'm an American. It's interesting how we both speak English but you have different words for things. I actually love your accent and obviously your love of horses.

I’ve been in the exact spot you were with Tilly, making a decision I didn’t want to make. Afterwards, I would wake up in the middle of night with tears in my eyes. Wondering if I did the right thing. My mind knew that I have done the right thing, but my emotions had not caught up with that decision. I’m here to tell you that you did do the right thing. Be reassured. It was done out of true love. Love is unselfish. You did not want to prolong his suffering, which could not be permanently alleviated, in order for you feel temporarily better because you did not have to make the final decision right then. You have my ultimate respect for your decision.

I agree with you about training being fun. Still have yet to compete but will always want to train. Edited to add that I had to have one of my horses put down. I know what you mean about the conflicting feelings you get when you see them being comfortable on a strong pain killer. For him too, it wasn't a long term solution. I currently have a thirty year old pony with Cushing's and worn down front teeth. He's on Prascend and a pain killer and living a normal, happy horse life but I am always aware that without the medication, he would decline and die. So he either continues to be medicated or he has to be put down. His vet is very happy with how he is. So I feel compelled to continue. Big Standardbred hugs from my overly enthusiastic behemoth.

My beliefs seem to be very similar to yours. I am vegan--not that I don't "like" dairy, but I am allergic. I love all of my 4 legged kids. I have mourned each loss. It is never easy. Sometimes it is almost intolerable. Through it all I am able to maintain a sense of gratitude for the experience of having them in my life. Some days I am grateful for the ability to feel so much pain. First I couldn't possibly experience so much pain unless there had also been so much love. I would never sacrifice the love in order to not feel the pain. Then there is the fact that I think part of what we are trying to learn today as a collective is how to co-exist with the pain & have gratitude for the existence of equal amounts of love---if we open to it.

I feel for you 😢 I'm in a similar situation with my boy, I've had to make the decision to have him pts at the end of summer. He struggled last winter, and has deteriorated since then so I'm not going to put him through another winter. I would rather a day too soon than a day too late, under stress and the trauma of him having another flare up. He is only 16, and my heart horse but his body is failing him and sadly it is affecting his mental state too, he's lost his spark and is tired. He is now on medication to keep him comfortable, and he can eat what he wants with the sun on his back enjoying time with his long term friend. X

It is always sad when horses have to be put down. But, if they are suffering, then they will suffer no more, which I think helps me. I've only had to put down 1 horse, and she had shattered her leg in multiple places and torn lots of muscles, so there was no hope for her. It was the first time I had to be part of something like that, and it was hard, but the horse and I did not fit well, and she was on the market at the time because she was too much for me, as someone coming up from ponies, but older, more experienced riders managed her schizophrenic tendencies.
