The Packers tried to get physical with the Cowboys, too, but, unfortunately for them, that was the kind of game that Dallas team relished. I remember at one point in the NFC title game the Packers pushed Emmitt Smith into a kicking net on their sideline, and Dallas' Darren Woodson blasted a Packer receiver and took out a Green Bay coach in the process.

@Roosevelt Darbey their defense wasn't hurting not having Deion Sanders they had the number 1 defense in the National Football League. They lost his game against the Packers because of turnovers. Same reason why they lost the 92 NFC Championship game to the Cowboys at home turnovers 2 interceptions by Steve Young of muffed Punt by Dexter Carter. Deion aint have shit to do with this loss.

After being the doormat in the '70's and 80's , the Packers had three straight 9-7 seasons in the '90's before finally breaking through with an 11-5 season in '95. This game was the turning point in Packer history and showed that they finally belonged. I remember it fondly as I was the only Packer fan in a bar dominated by 49er fans. They didn't even give me a hard time since they fully expected to win. As the game went on, they didn't say anything to me. They were in shock.

Crazy the Niners could never beat the Pack. They should’ve won more superbowls other than ‘94. Honestly, letting Ricky Watters walk away really left a void in the Niners Swag and attitude. goldenraven20 They would have won that if the refs weren’t blind. Jerry Rice fumbled the ball and the Packers recovered it. The refs ruled he was down but the replay showed he fumbled it before he went down. Even Summerall and Madden saw it. Two plays later was the Owens catch. If they would have ruled correctly, GB would would have went to the Divisional round and most likely have beaten Atlanta and they would have made it back to the NFC Championship game. And they didn’t have instant replay at that point. That game happens. Very next year, they bring back instant replay.

This was a huge game for the Packers but it was one of those "climbing up the mountain" type deals for them as they got creamed by the Cowboys. I'm a Cowboys fan and was at the Championship game the following week. Dallas by no means creamed the Packers that day. @@jaylucien669 : Well said, Jay. I agree with you. I am a die-hard Dallas fan, and that game was in doubt until the fourth quarter. GB was driving down the field, and thankfully, Larry Brown intercepted a pass near the sideline. One, or two plays later, Emmitt took the handoff from Troy, and ran it in for a TD to make it 38-27. Only then did I breathe a sigh of relief. GB went toe-to-toe with the Cowboys that day. Brett Favre did put on a clinic.

I agree! Some fans think that Dallas had it easy since they didn't play SF in the NFC Title game again. But it was anything but a cakewalk, GB played very well! GB obviously won the following year, so they were definitely the best in the NFC once Dallas started to go downhill.

I remember these years vividly. Green Bay was always gaining momentum on Dallas and San Francisco but could never get over the hump. This year San Francisco losing home field advantage in week 17 against Atlanta gave them a worst matchup against Green Bay and effectively gave Dallas new life after playing their worst football of the season. We all knew Green Bay was going to be good, this was just the beginning.

Was only 11 when this game happened but I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember the sense of dread when Jacke had a FG blocked on Green Bays opening drive, thinking it was a foreshadowing of things to come. Then the Walker fumble happened and Green Bay's offense was moving the ball all over. Remember the stunned crowd at halftime as nobody saw this coming, not even Packers fans in their wildest dreams. You knew the 49ers would come out fighting the 2nd half but the defense hounded Young all game.

The Niner D didn't play all that well this day, but the OL was busted up going in. See their previous game vs Atlanta, the season finale. They were cruising in the first half in what looked like an easy win, and home field throughout the playoffs. Then they began losing offensive lineman, Atlanta just pinned their ears back in the second half and went after Young relentlessly, and came back to win the game - thus SF lost home field, and had to play this game vs GB, instead of waiting to get Dallas, who they bitch slapped with Elvis Grbac at QB earlier in the year.

When you have Derrick Loville and a one-armed Adam Walker as your starting backfield, you're in trouble. They tee'd off on Young who was getting abused all season. Gotta give it the Pack though, they came into the defending champs backyard and took it from them. Favre at his absolute peak here 95-'97'.

The 49ers had two of the games best offensive playcallers in NFL history serving as OCs while George Seifert was head coach-Mike Holmgren and Mike Shanahan. Both would be responsible for their teams winning three combined Super Bowls in the 1990s. It’s a great thing the 49ers have a superb playcaller as head coach right now in Kyle Shanahan!

I remember watching this game and being so relieved that the pokes didn’t have to play the niners in the nfc championship game. The niners has beaten us 3 times in a row at that point. The following year Dallas lost in the divisional round to Carolina when Irvin went down with an injury. Green Bay dodged a bullet cuz favre could not beat the pokes in their prime.

Green Bay actually did Dallas a favor by ousting the Niners. Barry Switzer was pretty inept against the Niners (1-3 record), and they already had beaten Dallas earlier in the year at Texas Stadium. And Dallas owned the packers in the 90s, slapping them once again in the NFC championship game a week after this game.

You gotta be freaking kidding me. Antonio Freeman, Robert Brooks , Andre rison, Desmond Howard. They might not have been household names at the time but made significant contributions to beating the 49ers consistently. Generally speaking I don't disagree too strongly as Jerry rice, Terrell Owens, and JJ stokes should have been able to have better production. The difference coaching can make. A more talented team can lose if the coach is not getting the most out of his players.

Steve Young threw over 60 times in this game, and there was so much consistent pressure. Favre seemed to find the open man and fire away too fast for the defense to get to him.

Yep but farve moved better inside of the pocket and had a better feel for evading pressure. I know he has a reputation for throwing a lot of interceptions but it didn't happen in meaningful moments against the niners. We tried to draft players to contend with Antonio Freeman who constantly killed us but they all choked and let us down when it mattred

This 49er team, at the time, had a stunning loss imo; however, in retrospect this packer team was a contender and the 49ers were really weak at a corner spot plus losing Ricky waters just decimated their run game. The packers were just plain better by this time and I just didn’t know it yet.
