An utterly gorgeous Rover Montego 2.0 LXi with a miniscule 2,193 miles.
EQUIPMENT
Body-coloured moulded bumpers, front spoiler, laminated windscreen, halogen headlamps, retractable aerial in screen pillar, bronze tinted glass, electric slide/tilt sunroof with interior blind, electrically adjustable twin door mirrors, central locking, electric windows, R562 electronic stereo/radio cassette with 4 speakers, variable delay for the intermittent wipe, illuminated switches, digital clock, tachometer, low oil pressure and fuel lights, cigar lighter, coin tray, boot courtesy lamp, twin-tone horns, adjustable front seat belt upper mounts, remote boot release. Factory Options; Duo-tone paint. Accessories; Montego mud flaps front and rear, side coach line, 2X lounge cushions.
EXTERIOR
Rarely can a vehicle be described as factory perfect but this splendid Montego with only 2,193 miles from new is just that, perfect! Finished in striking and factory optional duo-tone paint Flame Red/Regent Grey, (Code RWN), it has a bright vibrant shine thanks to home garage storage and low dry weather use only. The moulded bumpers and claret bumper/side rubbing strips are straight with no damage and all trim, rubbers and badges are as new. One rear trim has a few minor stress fractures barely noticeable and all glass is unmarked. The underside, wheel arch apertures and all shuts remain beautifully clean still with factory wax applied.
INTERIOR
The elegant interior of this magnificent Montego offers amazing space and the contoured seats are superbly comfortable with hard and soft foams finished in Zenith, (Code LCG). The excellent console layout and clear instrumentation is all operational and there is no damage, cracks or lift to the colour-keyed facia. The moulded headlining is perfect as are the wood veneered inserts with no UV fading thanks to careful garage storage from new. A huge 18.4 cu.ft boot has never seen a load and lifting the boot carpet reveals factory untouched perfection.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 4-cylinder transverse OHC 1994cc engine with a three-way controlled catalyst produces 103bhp thanks to programmed ignition with electronic fuel injection. A top speed of 112mph and 0-60mph in 9.8 secs is quoted. The unit is eager, quiet and comes with a close-ratio transmission on the fuel-injected 2 litre petrol models. Progress through the gears is smooth and responsive and the exhibitionist will marvel how stunningly original under the bonnet is.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Steel wheels measuring 14inch are graced with unmarked full width wheel trims with new 185/65 R14 Uniroyal RainExpert 5 tyres fitted in March 2024. The servo-assisted, diagonal split dual circuit system with ventilated front disc brakes and drums to the rear, offer assured straight line stopping power.
HISTORY FILE
What an amazing history. Registered by the Rover Group, Company Vehicle Sales, Canley Road, Coventry on the 27th May 1993. A national advert in the Daily Express from the Hartwell Group was spotted by Mr David Geere for Montego 2.0 LXi’s for £7999, the press cutting is included in the history file. Mr Geere is a big fan of the Montego and wanted to replace his 1986 2.0 HL that had covered 60,000 miles at the time. Knowing that Montego production was soon to end, he called the garage and spoke to the Car Sales Representative, Ted Noble, and posted a £100 cheque deposit along with a type written letter to secure a duo-tone Flame Red example with 24 miles from new. A copy of this letter is also included in the history file. This pre-registered example was transferred to Mr Geere on the 9th October 1993 and he has remained the only owner since! After collection he continued to use his ‘old’ Montego expecting it to go wrong, but it never did! As the years rolled by his ‘new’ Montego was rarely needed and became a relic used only for shows and national events and such is his dedication for the marque, he still owns the 1986 2.0 HL intended to be replaced which instead frequents the show circuit alongside this perfect example!
Included in the history file is all the original dealer correspondence including the new vehicle purchase invoice, previous MOT certificates and invoices, all handbooks, manuals and two keys with dealer fobs. In March 2024 the vehicle had a major service to include all fluids, filters and a cambelt.
HPI Clear.

I absolutely love it. If only I had the time and a dry space to care for this car. It is fantastic. I really hope it finds a good home. Cars like this were so common - I remember my neighbour had a solid blue J-reg facelift LX estate in the early 2000's - and then suddenly as if overnight, it and lots of others have just gone. KGF, you are doing a brilliant job helping to preserve such gems!

LX? For a Montego?? I thought the general trim levels were L, HL, HLS, Mayfair, Vanden Plas, and MG Montego EFi and Turbo models?? Where was LX a model trim level from, and how common was it?

@@letsdiscussitoversometea8479towards the end, they brought in LX and SLX. They might have dropped the L and certainly the GSi and GTi, earlier on. Countryman was the other spec at the end, running till after the LXi and SLXi were dropped.

I like the Montego as opposed to the Maestro. It looks like a much more substantial car, and better driver comfort too. I could see myself driving one of these. I know they had their rust issues, as did every Austin Rover /BL group car, but the Montego is probably the most handsome car to come out of AR/BL during the 80's imo.

This has got to be the best Austin/Rover Montego car that has survived.. This car is a stunner...This really is too good to use. The design of this car started way back in 1977 ... However, things been what they were with British Leyland in the 1970s..This car took SEVEN years to develop and it did not go on sale until 1984. EDIT.... I suspect the Montego was supposed to be the replacement for the Morris Marina but the design took so long they gave the Marina a facelift "On the cheap" and called it the "Ital" while the Montego was still been developed. Seems strange the Ital was dropped the same time this car went on sale in 1984. Kind regards Brian
