Why does a 747 only fly for a 3 hour flight? I thought it was meant to be long haul

Japan’s traveling culture has been large due to population density, so Japan Airlines and ANA consulted with Boeing to make it as the solution to transport up to 500 passengers in one go on fully booked domestic routes rather than using five 737s or A320s, which would take up time and extra gates within a single day. This variant has last retired in 2014 and is no longer in use.

While that domestic variant flew only within Japan, it could go up to 7,260 nautical miles, making it possible to cross the Pacific. JA8961, the last variant of the D type was flown to Tupelo Regional Airport in Mississippi upon retirement.
