"Last year, Sami Packard, an Accenture consultant who lives in the Inner Sunset, ran a two-day off-site retreat…for her marriage. She rented an Airbnb in the city, hired babysitters to watch her and husband Ben’s two kids, and drew up a detailed off-site agenda. “The goal is to evolve how our household operates in a way that aligns with our current needs,” she wrote.
It was an unusual thing to do, she acknowledged, but it felt necessary. For the last year, her marriage had been floundering, with the couple unable to agree on key life issues. They’d tried couples counseling, she said, but they kept going around in circles. “We needed a different approach.”"

I grew up conservative. I'm definitely not a conservative anymore. I highly doubt Kamala will win. If there was conservativs voting for Biden because they don't like Trump, most of those same conservativs won't vote for a female. It"s because of how they were raised to think. I hope I'm wrong. But if I'm not wrong and she does run against Trump and looses, I'm then blaming everyone that kept nagging Biden to step down including TYT.

I don't disagree with Anna, but it's funny how naive she is and how evident it is that she and her husband do not have kids. That changes everything, and while performance reviews won't change it, the truth is you actually drop the ball more often than not when you have children in your life.

I’m with Cenk on this one. I feel as though too many people idealize relationships and have flowery ideas of what romance should look like, and it will carry you through your marriage for 60+ years. The reality is once you get past that initial honeymoon phase, you need to maintain it, and it’s not easy. Some couples goals, aspirations, boundaries, expectations, habits and lifestyles blend so perfectly together that they don’t have to think about it. But that’s extremely rare. More often than not there are going to the CONSTANT concessions you are going to have to make in your life if you want your relationship to last, lifestyle choices you need to reconsider, habits you have to change, boundaries you have to acknowledge or put up, or even take down. The problem is people are poor at communicating these things, it requires a degree of introspection which a lot of people don’t have. That’s why marriage counselors and couples therapy exist to begin with. If putting sticky notes on a wall which say “these are the things I wish you did, these are the things you wish I did, these are the things I wish you did less up, etc, etc”. I think it’s very mature to holistically look at your relationship like that and figure out a way forward. I feel like people greatly underestimate how much visualizing relationships in this way can help in ways just sitting down and talking to people won’t. People are making such a huge fuss about it because they are associating it with work or tech companies. Consider this, prior to marriage counseling, counseling was reserved for mental illness and drug rehabilitation. Can you imagine what peoples opinions were when “marriage” counseling was proposed (no pun intended). “How broken is your relationship that you need a COUNSELOR to help you?? You might as well just give up!” Not realizing how beneficial it would be because of how bad people are at identifying what might be very small problem in their relationship that can eventually snowball.

I think she's talking about some managers behind the scenes who have been hired on in the last 5 years. My guess specifically, the media and brand manager. The managers definitely want Ana to talk about bs national politics stories instead of something with boring details like union contract negotiations. They probably tell her to post on social media and all this other media management stuff.

Why do we have performance reviews? Who is it for?. In w work environment they are for the employers, not the employee. they are there to weed out weak employees, and keep some salaries down (as there is always something to criticize). So the only thing these reviews are for is to speed up separations in marriages. there might be better ways to help couples communicate than put their marriages in numbers (and compare them to other which is always, always a road to resentment)

I agree with ANA wholeheartedly. Introducing formal “performance reviews “ and structured weekly meetings in a romantic relationship or marriage is a terrible idea. It can shift the focus away from the emotional connection, love, and understanding that are at the core of a healthy relationship. It makes the relationship feel corporate work setting and transactional rather than based on genuine feelings and connections.

People that want to measure other peoples performance in various ways, are almost always unskilled and authoritative. What they are doing is counter productive. They ruin the performance of the team by introducing false goals and selfishness, and corrupting solidarity and honesty. A team should organize itself, and not be managed. A project manager (managing a project) must not be a team manager (managing people). If you want to measure performance, then do that on the project, not the team or its members. I assume the same principles can be used in a relationship. By the way, these tech industry tools you're talking about are mostly outdated. It's astonishing that so many businesses still haven't entered the modern era, as far as management is concerned. If you want your employees to do good work, then let them figure out how to do it instead of harassing them, because that surely doesn't enhance performance. People want to do good if you let them.

I think it could be a good spring board idea but not the finished product. It’s an interesting approach to make it easier to visualize where some problems are without blaming the other person and looking at like “this is the issue how do WE overcome it “ instead of it being a screaming match of you don’t do this or you did that so I’ll just do this or that out of spite. Having the data can help also to not have unrealistic expectations of the partner you’re with so if anything it can help keep that mental check to not compare your relationship to others but rather to improve your relationship in your own way based on each others strengths and weaknesses. Now the “review “ part is ridiculous but that data could be very valuable information that could help make more informed decisions when facing problems

I see a relationship performance review as an attempt to voice their annoyances in a safe way without resorting to nagging. One way I heard of affecting behavioral change in a relationship is the penny/dime method. If the other does something you don't like you write it down and put a penny in a jar. If they do something good then you note it and put a dime in. People will strive to earn shiny dimes and not earn a dull penny, so behavior changes.

What I find crazy is "trends". It feels like we are those sheeps who just jumped into a cliff because the first one did. Some couple hundreds died and the others survived since they fell over the first ones. So this "viral" fever of things is so weird. I would expect news as "a very specific couple did a performance review among themselves", instead of "couples are doing performance reviews". Why?

I think anything that will cause a couple to break up in an amicable way as soon as possible is positive. An app that makes couples counselling and conversation easier would be great. But workification is not the way to go. Performance reviews suck at work and at home. However conversations about boundaries and expectations are good.

Be careful what you wish for Ana. Not saying your husband isn’t a super great dude. It’s really not about that at all. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. If you didn’t have time away, you wouldn’t have the same relationship you do today. But I don’t know you or your husband so that may not apply.

Idioms are basically meaningless. "Absense makes the heart grow fonder" What about "out of sight, out of mind"? For me personally, the second rings more true, i have spent periods where my wife and I are with each other most of the day, and periods where we are away from each other a week at a time, I prefer much more time with my wife. Even if we aren't doing the same thing, she watching TV me playing a video game, or even us both doing work from home, being in the same room is great.

I believe it was either a Black Mirror episode or perhaps a Dust film, but in the future humans built relationships through electronic devices/electronic guardians... without those devices they were stymied with fear and anxiety... get out and do things, learn to look people in the eye without a phone between you. Remember... robots don't cry.
