My spanish father, who was a flamenco guitarist used to play this, for almost all of my life. He died two years ago, at the age of 86. I avoided listening to it, for a very long time. Because I knew my heart would be filled with so much joy and so much sadness at the same time. Those feeling are hard to cope with. Anyway, I'm glad I did today.

The piece is inspired by the Alhambra, an originally Arab city in present-day Spain. As is customary in Arab buildings, there is running water and the tremolo evokes the course of the water in one of the fountains of the Alhambra. There’s no piano involved whatsoever.

She plays the last chord perfectly and gently in accordance with the overall feel of the piece. So many other guitarists incongruously slam the last chord like a bottle of beer at a drinking contest.
@frankmalone20914 жыл бұрын
There is no such law that all chords should match the overall feel. But it's true that many guitarists do senseless things like banging out the last chord even though, being usually the home key, it is what you expect the piece to end on. So it's not something unexpected and significant to emphasize.

I confess I've enjoyed the loud finish I've heard in other renditions. It seems to invoke a naive, raw, unsophisticated but joyous spirit as one might imagine could be associated with the beautiful scenery of Andalusia (no I'm not fancy but I was very lucky to visit the Alhambra once). This is the first one I've heard with the more expected ending, and I like it very much.

I heard her play this live about 10 - 12 years ago. Recordings don't do her justice, because her use of dynamics -- loud & soft contrasts -- is much more striking when one hears it live. Also, I like her fingering/choice of strings in the opening phrases. It's not the usual one, & I prefer hers because it is more smooth & flowing. And the 2-finger tremolo -- it seems more natural than the 3-finger. I think it might work better for many people if they practiced it from the start. (It might have for me, but it is far too late...).
@TiagoRamosSf5 жыл бұрын
I saw Ms. Vidovic palying in Boston last year and I noticed the same thing. Her recordings do not do justice to the awesome control of dynamics she displays. I was mesmerized by every piece she played. She keeps you constantly guessing.

The three finger tremolo is hard to make the tremolo even. I kept hearing the tremolo coming in set of three instead of an even flow, even when a professional plays. I imagine it would be more natural to do tremolo in set of 2 or 4 notes, but of course using 4 fingers is impractical.

I watched and listened in awe as I felt moved to tears. I don't have words. I'm stunned silent.

I have been trying to remember the name of this piece for years, and I stumbled upon this today! So beautiful! Now that I know the name, I can look for sheet music, and try to play it on my mandolin. I'm so happy, thank you and thanks for the gorgeous rendition!

Brava! This is one of my favorite renditions of this on KZbin. From the very first measure she adds intuitive pauses and emotion to the piece instead of just a mechanical rendition of notes. I can feel this piece in my heart-- which is surely how the composer intended it. I like that she uses two fingers for tremolo (PIMI instead of PIMA)... which is unusual and refreshing to see (I learned that method in a college course and it works well). Not many pieces can actually bring tears to my eyes... but this one has more than once. Absolutely beautiful, Ana.

Well said, at this stage of performance and 35 years of playing guitar I think she is allowed to do anything, including playing upside down if she wanted.
