akbar in arabic can also mean oldest, Ali lakbar (as) was the oldest out of his brothers, there was small ali, ali el asghar, medium ali, ali el wasat, and then there is oldest ali, ali lakbar so when they say ali lakbar they are talking about the oldest ali (nickname) hope this helped :)

I know i am late but i felt that you should know, Ali Akbar does not mean as it does in "Allahu Akbar" Ali Akbar means Ali "the older one" because there is Ali alasghar.. Ali "the little one" :)
