I think Monsters Inc has the key to why Analog Horror has lost its flair. One thing that's mentioned is that kids aren't getting scared anymore, but all the monsters are doing is running up screaming. There's no style, no finesse, just screaming. There's still kids that get scared but its lost its teeth. Meanwhile, in Monsters University they mention adults don't get scared, it's pointed out to be impossible. Yet when Mike is stuck in the human world with cops coming down, he uses environment and atmosphere to do the impossible and terrify an entire squad of cops. This is what Analog lacks, style and atmosphere. Faces changing while an AI voice talks over isn't scary. You need more as you get older. If something is to stay potent it has to keep bringing the scares.

Not to diminish the truthfulness of your comment, but on a broader scale, younger creators aren't entirely to blame. A big problem is that people forget that "Analog" is so much more than VHS/broadcasts. Radio Station 58 had a multitude of videos. Including live-footage of a person driving around. I think the fact that a lot of people seem to only talk about "bad" ones where its just "look at the scary face!!!!" and talk about how analog horror is dead, completely overshadows any other that has a different concept ,like " the tangi virus" or the incredibly underrated " winter of 83" ,and the fact that literally every project gets compared to local 58/gemini home entertainment/mandela catalogue even when the concept is entirely different and not seen as its own thing also doesn't help
@talos4702 Жыл бұрын
I agree there are analog horror series that are overlooked that are original and decent, but I think like with FANF, it’s not the concept but the execution that has ruined its scariness. Sure the series can be about a virus, or an apocalypse or a meat monster, but at the end of the day they all do the same thing. Fake instructional videos, jump scares, text to speech, they all just do the same thing when analog horror can be so much more. And unfortunately, it’s always blatantly obvious where they get their inspiration. Paying homage or referencing something is fine, horror movies do it all the time, but there’s a reason why not every horror movie (at least the good ones) aren’t just copies of Texas chainsaw/haloween/hellraiser/night of the living dead. And it’s because of their execution.

My biggest issue with the genre is that it just doesn't know what subtlety is, not to mention that it feels shallow. Everything has to be some kind of eldritch diety that turns your dick inside out, and it has to bombard you with jumpscares and imagery about that dick turning inside out. And everyone's one-upping each other to try and make that same formula even scarier and less subtle than the last. Why should I care if everyone in the series is just a face and a name with no personality or character to latch onto? The shocking imagery is unsettling, but what else is there to keep me invested once I've grown numb to it? What kind of fear does the deity represent, if that makes sense? This is also why I think UrbanSPOOK's first video should've been its last (mayybe being a trilogy at most). Using something much more grounded in reality like a serial killer was a breath of fresh air, but everything after that video quickly devolved into the exact same shit that makes the genre stale and uninteresting, and I'm tired of people pretending like UrbanSPOOK is still revolutionary. If you want a better example of the same premise, just watch The Kid and the Camera. I must emphasize that I know that there's still good analogue horror, but I'm just saying, it's really hard to find the good stuff anymore.

A big issue also is lore. Idk why, but kids nowadays fucking LOVE lore. They need it, which is something channels like Matpat or others thrive off of. Like they believe having a backstory to something scary makes it even more scary, but it just does the opposite. The reason why something is scary is because the fear of the *unknown* . It's why FNAF lost it's magic. Having overcomplicated lore just made it less interesting and just boring.

Eventually, these creators will be able to grow and create something more genuine and creative. And then, it will stop and everyone will move on... . . . . . . . . . . . . . a lot of analog horror just seems really derivative - so many people recognized the use of grainy footage, contorted faces, and 'subliminal messaging' in popular examples that they rushed to create something like them and ended up overlooking everything which actually made them interesting. (people are trying to make something which tastes like vanilla, nailing the first few top notes, and missing the other 200 compounds.) how fast the internet moves is both a blessing and a curse, it births so many new wonderful niches at once that they all end up decaying much faster. instead of fleshed out creative movements and subcultures, we create more and more hyper specific genres and -cores. we grow a thousand trees to chop them all down for wood a few years later, before they ever have a chance to become big and strong. as always thx for the awesome vid ray ,*>)

@@giovonniiclayton Really? I think modern horror in many media is actually a downgrade, especially since they seem to forget that sometimes implied stuff that you don't see can be 100 times scarier than any modern CGI effect. Also, the need to overexplain everything is ruining almost every horror; Slender Man for example was the most scary when no one really knew about him and the first strange game just threw you into this weird forest without main menu and any explanation. Mystery keeps horror alive, and sadly the internet (especially the kid-friendly-internet) ruined that. Not just for analog horror. Best example is "back rooms", which went from this haunting mystery to this gimmick fested SCP 2.0 with tons of explanations and rules.

As someone who was born in 2011, I used to love analog horror when I was 7 or 8. Mainly because I had this broken DVR and VHS player and always wanted to see how it played. Just recently my grandma found this old TV and I just turned it on. It was just static. The digital snow. I always wanted it to work or do something. While watching things like Gemini Home or Local 58 and such I started wondering, and wondering. It was a good experience the first time watching it but after Kane Pixel's backrooms it just dawned on me that analog horror was becoming saturated. I enjoyed this video as it addressed the elephant in the room. (Yes I typed ALLAT and no I am by no means a comment bot.)

biggest gripe with analog horror is how the vids are supposed to be recordings kinda like surveillance vids so when they add dialouge, mixed in with other footage/graphics, transitions it breaks immersion.

In my opinion vintage 8 is one of the best analog horror creators at the moment, having a vast amount of series with different themes and well thought out stories that for the most part don't rely on jumpscares or distorted faces, and the creator is often experimenting with styles and storytelling. Anyway, I do agree that meat and sweet dreams are great examples of everything that analog horror still has to offer

It feels like analog horror is going through a deconstruction and parody phase that's expanding the idea of what the genre can be. The magical girl genre in anime is an example; it went from being girly and cutesy, Madoka Magika questioned what it could be, and now it can be a lot of things. This cycle can run the risk of making it super vague and hard to define, but skilled creators will find this freeing instead of limiting to a formula.

My kids are in the gen z/alpha range, and my youngest just has this massive fascination with what we'd call "retro" stuff.. basically any non-current generation hardware. I suspect that it is because a lot of our current gen hardware feels very closed off and inscrutable. Having a phone that is cordless (so the connection is invisible), with a high quality screen to watch things streamed from the internet, and taking digital photos/video, etc, is all so star trekky closed off. A photo that captures light onto film. Running that film through wheels and having light go through it to display something. Mechanical levers and strips of ink to print letters onto paper. These are observable and you are so much closer to understanding how it can function. One might be able to take it apart and put it together, which means you might eventually be able to create it yourself. This fascination leads to immersion into the subject, which then has its own mystical horrors... A digital device operating itself and pictures looking weird is nothing special.. could even happen from a glitch, let alone intentionally. "Computers" and "digital" basically makes mundanity out of magic. But a polaroid camera capturing ghostly images, or a mechanical typewriter operating itself, or a VHS tape playing differently on each playback or interacting with you exclamations as you watch it.. There's no easy explanation anymore and the magic and wonder come back.

Monument Mythos is one of my favorite ones that has come out because it has a lot of lore, but relies more on the horrible actions of humans while still having eldritch monsters, instead of that being the main go-to. Another aspect I like that I haven't seen much of is alternate history horror because both genres feel oversaturated, it's just very unsettling to hear about certain events which went differently in the MM timelines talked about so casually, no matter how horrifying they are. There's also the aspect of jumping between completely different timelines at random which is terrifying and I'm disappointed this genre hasn't been used more often. As someone who writes alternate history I think it is a great example of blending these two unique genres and wish there were more like it.

As much as i love the genre, the only current one that truly stood out to me as being really really good was Greylock, especially episodes 6-12, because the concept of the series gets you thinking and connecting the dots and the later parts of the series have seriously cool and creepy imagery without resorting to "woooh scary photoshopped face jumpscare" (especially episode 12, i wont spoil it but i still have no idea how they made the creature at the end, its really good prop work) I'm so fucking sick of the mimic trope, i enjoyed the rest of Vita Carnis but the mimic part i just skip because I'm so sick of hearing about Mandela-esque alternate people in every series Monument Mythos is also interesting and has some really cool concepts but it got a little too complicated and drawn out for me by the end of season 2, and its really goofy but not necessarily in a bad way analog horror reminds me of what happened to creepypasta. there's so many badly made ones like Jeff the Killer and Squidward's Suicide (the mimic trope and the "music cuts out with a distorted face" trope is *identical* to the bleeding hyperrealistic eyes trope of bad creepypasta), but occasionally you stumble across an absolute gem like Borrasca or Ted the Caver, same thing here but yeah, local58, greylock, and gemini are the ones i would recommend

As I put it in my short rant: The kids making Analog Horror these days never stimmed with a floppy disc and it shows. The lack of awareness of a medium's limitations result in anachronisms that if not utilized properly for horror will just pull you out of the experience. The Modern Revival of Digital Horror that Knows the Internet, in contrast to 2000's Digital Horror that Didn't, meanwhile holds nostalgia and awareness of the medium's possibility, and so it can really pull you in. Like the Channel Chasers SmileDog series, the way the computer behaves when infected by the entity and the way it's shot really adds to its effect because "It's Not Supposed To Do That, What The Fuck!!!"

It has just been plagued by a lot of loweffort series' and goofy parodies that try to ape off the success of the big ones that really had dedication snd care behind them. It can still be very much effective. The walten files, fnaf VHS tapes, and Gemini will forever be some of the most amazingly crafted and disturbing pieces of internet media out there. And frankly the more I watch them the more I find out and get creeped out by. It's like Kubrick's TheShining, it's got so many little things throughout it that warrant many rewatches. But instead of getting bored you become more of a fan.

The biggest change in the way I viewed horror was when reading House of Leaves. It's not without its problems but it was so much more emotional and sincere than any other horror content I had consumed, and it made me realize that most of the horror content I see is basically completely barren of sincerity. Maybe in pursuit of making something scary, creators are forgetting to put their lived experience into the story.

This is concerning as I am trying and currently creating my own Analog series. It’s been an emotional struggle as I’m trying so hard to not be like every other series as I’ve been too late to the party. I constant have these thoughts that everyone will just say it’s another clone even if I’m trying my hardest to not make another cliche series. It’s a horrifying thought despite the fact I’ve haven’t even shown anything. It’s even more demoralizing when my series centered around things that many cliches have most importantly a monster and a cryptic story which feels like you can’t do anymore. Idk if anyone else feels this but it hurts me alot

My honest advice is: Just do it. After you make the first episode, continue from there and evolve, and if you want to make something really original, look for things that you personally love and add them to your story (I did that with Tango on my series, for example). Don't stop to think what others might say and get to work :) (And tell me when you release it, I would love to see it)

This reminds me of the “analogue horror with dinosaurs is scary” video I saw a while back. The video covered an analogue horror series that used Jurassic park as its source material and said it was worth a watch. The series was incredibly cliche. Jumpscares with no setup, text to speech dialogue everywhere, the “viewing of this tape is prohibited” trope, and some stolen sound bites from the og fnaf vhs series. The other Jurassic park analogue horror series I saw had similar problems and I genuinely believe these videos would’ve been considered joke videos had they came out in the prime of analogue horror. Analogue horror nowadays can be summed up by waiting months for good analogue horror series to get new episodes while trying to find diamonds in the rough. The rough being content farms, the diamonds being something unique and scary
