When you read about what happened before the attack you'll learn that it was the enlisted men who did everything right and the officers who made all the mistakes.

As an Australian, with some years on the clock, I find this such a sobering event to watch & listen about. I am lost for words to even begin to describe the sorrow that I feel for those killed & injured and their families, and for the USA as a whole. It is just so tragic.

Excellent documentary. As always, I appreciate the maps and imagery that you use. As a visual learner, they were especially helpful for helping me learn more about the attack on Pearl Harbor. I hadn't seen all of the raw footage before either. I also appreciate being able to learn about Dorie Miller and Peter Tomich. Both were brave and selfless and courageous. Also, as always, great narration by Dan. Keep up the nice work.

Great video. Small nitpick, the quality/soundlevel of the commentary varies at times, little annoying at times. No big deal, doesnt distract from the great video, but wanted to give you some feedback.

It did but we took it down after a couple of days due to some tightening up of the visuals and extra segments added in that we thought made the story more understandable.

Oh I have a named ww2 marine helmet with emblem to a Sgt stationed at Ewa during the attack. I obtained it from him along with all his paperwork, uniforms before he passed in 1982. He was a good friend of my dad.

For those visiting Pearl Harbor…..The USS Missouri (BB-63)…that museum/memorial is positioned so that the bow faces eternal watch over the Arizona memorial. The Ford Island hangar although renovations over the years and is now the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum……some of the bullet holes from the attack are purposefully left intact.

One small note. Hawaii is more like about 2,500 miles (or about 4,100-4,200km) from the US West Coast, not 5,000 miles. The closest major city is actually San Francisco, which is just under 2,400 miles from Honolulu. The distances from Los Angeles or San Diego, the other major cities on the California coast are a bit longer, at over 2,500 miles. While these cities are south of San Francisco, the coast bends to the east north of Los Angeles, putting the southern cities a little further away.

Despite being recommended by several Naval officers and congressmen for the Congressional Medal of Honor, Doris Miller was awarded the Navy Cross, because the Sec of the Navy at the time refused to sign off on the award of the MoH to a black serviceman.

InB4 someone says they should have gone ahead with the third wave, which was a) not planned, b) could not have done much because the fuel storage was NOT nearly as vulnerable as Nimitz said it was, and c) was logically impossible for the Japanese to pull off.
@Ruckweiler734 ай бұрын
Lived 8 years on Oahu and it is about 2400 miles to Hawaii and not 5,000 as mentioned. Also, It is Kaneohe and not Kanoehe. Otherwise, it was a pretty good video that gave a succinct description of that "day of Infamy."
@stephennewton22235 ай бұрын
Did any of the wooden fins fail and the torpedoes hit the bottom of the harbor? My understanding is that their was never a third wave ordered, and, thus, could not be cancelled. Genda later said that he was on the bridge and heard nothing of a third wave.

And before anyone gets angry, reproved Pearl Harbor was vulnerable to air attacks with the fleet problems during the interwar years, report is also publish, but I think the department of defense in February 1941 stating Pearl Harbor is vulnerable to 6 different kinds of attack including sabotage, submarine infiltration, shelling, and at the top of the last air attack. And the most damning piece of evidence. Is the November 5 war warning order sent to all Pacific stations that war with Japan is expected it to happen soon add the Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, does nothing about it
@AB-mw8oz5 ай бұрын
Being blamed for the events, and having insufficient defenses are different things Did pearl have inadequate defenses? Maybe Were the Americans to blame for Pearl Harbor? No, the Japanese were on a war path. The sanctions were laid out very clearly. Japan chose war, they chose war against China, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Netherlands, India and the United States, committing atrocities that made the Nazis look human

The funny thing is, I truly believe if they had just invaded Dutch Indies and British Malaya possessions that the U.S. wouldn't have declared war. Sure, Philippines is in the middle of your trade lanes but.... I really don't think U.S. would have got involved even at that point. It was the surprise attack that broke us out of our isolationism. 11:00 Always sobering seeing a man who knew his duty, and acted on it with honor when the moment came out of nowhere.

Peter Tomich was Croat from Prolog, what is today Bosnia and Herzegovina. He spoke Serbo-Croatian not German. If you don’t wanna call him American after all he did, at least don’t insult him by calling him Austrian.

It baffles me how Dorris Miller only gets a Navy Cross for all that he did and being one of the last to leave west virginia helping to remove wounded!! Yet two officers doing there job are killed and given medals of honour for doing nothing more then what is expected of a Naval officer!!
