An underrated early film. Reminds me of Dark Star. Also, A History of Violence (2005) is probably my favorite Cronenberg film.

Always enjoyable to hear you guys talk about things. Garth Ennis's Crossed is generally regarded as 'Garth wants spending money.' and very low on his list of good work. I'd be intrigued to hear what you have to say about the Preacher comics he wrote. (The tv show wasn't very faithful, ironically.)

Horrorshow, everything you suggest DC may be doing, IS what he's doing. A mind like his would never be satisfied with doing just another mad scientist tale.

The reason I hesitate with that reading is that it's such a self-report, as the kids say. I can't imagine drawing attention to it, unless it's in a non-partisan Kubrick way or the more sinister 'rubbing your face in it'. I am very inclined to rewatch a lot of Cronenberg and look for a consistent vision.

Heya Kent, in fairness we went into somewhat spicy territory later on and Shivers was very effective in triggering disgust. I did find the haribo aspects going a bit far... made worse by knowledge of Cronenberg's earlier short 'Stereo'. Related, I was watching adaptations of The Picture of Dorian Gray recently and turned to 2009's 'Dorian Gray'. That did a fine job of making the sex itself horrific, quite impressively. Colin Firth is in it too having a great time.
