That's the only Call of Juarez game I've ever experienced... except I didn't never really got past the civil war section mostly because of how difficult it was to control the fucking cannon, I was ok with the game all up until that point where I called it quits on the game.

Little fun fact: your health in the 360 version regenerates, but the health bottles have not been patched out so you still see them being dropped by enemies or lying around, something that may come off confusing when you didn't play it on PC beforehand. Great review though, I've too completed it this year on PC and thought it was just alright, but Bound in Blood is something else, I'm sure you're gonna love it, an improvement in every department.

@@damiensawyers4133 At least until you got to the last few levels of the game, one of the two allies died you're gonna have to redo the entire level (if you're lucky enough) of course that's even assuming you can even get pass the bad Bessie boss fight since it has an consistent crashing issue on every platform except the PlayStation 2.

The guns were terrible though. How do you make a lever action rifle where the lever doesn't move the action? Guns are the stars of the show in both first person shooters and in westerns, you have to animate them properly or they're completely flaccid. Also it had the most generic and forgettable gameplay and plot of the whole bunch, at least The Cartel was running on a reskinned Dead Island engine and was notable for how bad it was, Gunslinger just kinda limped out onto the market and then you forget about it for a couple years until you see it on your steam library and go "oh hey I own that game."

The thing i liked most about this game was you could dual wield two different handguns like a schofield (faster reloading but not as powerful as other handguns) and a ranger (very powerful but slow to reload) or even a revolver and a sawn off shotgun don’t know why they didn’t keep this it would’ve been great in the newer games especially gunslinger it was such a good feature.

Bound in Blood and Gunslinger are the best, but this one is good too. This was one of the first two games that I ever had for the Xbox 360. I just recently bought it and Bound in Blood again and they are both still fun to play, but I will admit I'm pretty nostalgic for a lot of the games I played on 360. Edited after playing them all again, the first one is still my favorite. From a narrative perspective and just gameplay, it's the most unique formula out of the four I think and I love the cat and mouse dynamic of the two main characters.

I'm using my ladies KZbin profile to comment because I don't have one. Just clarifying. GREAT review man.... I wanna say that from the start. THANK you for reviewing this game. It's a gem in my eyes. But I play(ed) on the 360, so that's probably why. Differing experiences. I'm gonna bring up a few aspects you chose not to mention. Because I love this game. So this may get a little long. The graphics always made my day, though. Amen to that. That deserves a mention itself, and you're AWESOME for making that clear. :) You probably know about them, but I want to go into the guns. Throughout the campaign, in almost every level, there are *prime* and *superb* quality guns (like in BiB, which were done better) hidden in drawers, in chests, random wilderness spots, and ends of pathways. These guns are PHENOMENAL, and change the issue with *rusty* and regular quality guns. You don't get to pick which specific ones appear, but the game usually provides good enough high quality guns that make your life easier, ESPECIALLY on *Very Hard* difficulty. Some levels have 1, very few levels have none, while a couple levels have 4 or 5 of them. They're great to pick up, because it HIGHLY enhances the game. On the duels, MOST people missed the nuance of the drawing mechanic. Because the game FAILED HORRIBLY at making it clear. The trick was to do it VERY gently and calmly, and the more precise you were, the more control you'd have. If you ACTUALLY did it perfectly, your cross-hair would pop EXACTLY onto the enemies head, ending the duel within a half second. I know this because the duels unlocked after beating the game, there's one where you duel 3 guys, and I managed to get a best time of 2.09 seconds. But your timing HAD to be perfect. I got that time AFTER a couple hours of trying JUST that duel. THAT'S how I eventually figured it out. But most people didn't spend so much time doing those. So, I can't blame anyone.... Because the developers dropped the ball there, BIG time. Billy's whip was unique, and the level with eagle Mountain, where you hunt 3 rabbits and climb the mountain for the feather for Calm Water, that's the level that stuck with me. It's impeccable IMO. Plus, how Calm Water helps you on that level, HE is the indian war chief from BiB, which he was named Running River then. I wont go into spoiling the story, because BiB is IMO the BEST western FPS game for the entire catalog of the 360. So anyway, the way the story is done, how BiB is actually a PREQUEL, was amazing to me. The story line from game to game, carried over into present day for The Cartel, wasn't done great. But what WAS done right, was how so many of the same areas you played on the first two games, you end up at them during The Cartel, in present day. Which was the best part of The Cartel IMO, period. I rate the games in order of quality like this. Bound in Blood is the best, THEN the first game, THEN Gunslinger, and last and least, The Cartel. But I've kept them PURELY for my love for the whole series. I actually lost my copy of the first game years ago. And I looked for another the whole time. I JUST managed to find another, in PRISTINE condition at my local shop, about a week ago. I was COMPLETELY ECSTATIC. The box just didn't have the manual. But the CD was PERFECT. Probably because whoever had it, had played it SO little. Haha. The gatling gun battle is only so difficult on *Very Hard*...... It requires exact timing. Which you HAVE, because you got past it. It IS CHEESE at points, but that's why flanking is huge in this game. Avoiding the gatling on VH difficulty is about the only way it's doable, because as soon as you can the operator, another punk goes to man it. The LONG chase with the buggy kinda makes sense in the moment, and in real distance..... it's about 2 miles. I found it amazing. Just my opinion though. The "boss battle" with Mason in the villa near Molly, IS weird, I fully agree. And the devs SHOULD'VE blocked the way back up, BECAUSE of the issue you encountered. And it wouldn't have been hard to do, OR reason, since Mason THROWS DYNAMITE at you. The wall, or JUST another object could've blocked the way back up. I fully agree. The section where you protect Molly from the thrown dynamite, right after fighting Mason, it is absurd at times. But I suspect I don't think so much of it, because the difference in the cool down timing for the Concentration mode. You said it's 20 seconds on PC? YEP, on the 360, it's literally no more than 5 seconds. So it can be downright abused. But even without Concentration Mode, you DEFINITELY understood that using a Sawed Off Shotgun was the best way to go for that part. Literally, the only part I ever got angry with, was the opening section (which is repeated when you enter the villa at the end of the game) with the gatling on *Very Hard* specifically. But, after years of playing first person shooters, my reflexes have gotten to a level that the event doesn't present issues anymore. I'm almost done, I swear. I really appreciate it if anyone ACTUALLY read this whole thing. Haha. An aspect I feel has been dropped by too many games though, is how at the close of every level, your accuracy is tracked with everything, even fists and the whip. THAT was always something I strived to accel at. Thank you for this review. You made a new FOREVER subscriber with your solid and nuanced focused way of doing the whole thing. Truly, you're fxxkin AWESOME. Keep up the high quality standards. And I'm sure you loved Bound In Blood. A good game, is a good game. Take care. Best of luck with everything. It's going to sound a bit cheesy, but it really was the Crysis of 2006. Didn't run super great even on high-end machines of the time, but it was such a tech marvel that it wasn't too surprising. Had a bit too much fun with the demo back when it was new.

Gunslinger on PS3 is the only CoJ game Ive played. I have to say i actually enjoyed playing through it quite a bit. It was fun, and i like the gimmick of the gameplay being a story someone is telling, so sometimes things change on the spot as the story does.

@@kkarx The first game only mentioned that Ray killed his younger brother and that made him turn to the light, it didn't explain how and the journey that led to his ruthless behaviour even after becoming a priest. It also didn't explain why he distanced himself from Thomas and Marisa to the point of hating their child so much and calling him a bastard son. I'd say that made for an interesting point to explore. The FoV was indeed a bad part but the graphics were more than fine for the time as opposed to CoJ1's that resembled CoD1 graphics (2003 graphics in a 2007 game when there were plenty others much better looking at the time). As for the cartoonish characters I'm not sure what you mean, every character of relevance got a proper introduction and was well fleshed out; you knew their motives and goals and why you were either working for them or hunting them. Animations were stiff but that's to be expected. The soundtrack and voice acting were beyond phenomenal though and you could feel every emotion from each line as if they were real; the game was just stunning by comparison. CoJ1 had a lot of filler levels and mute characters by comparison.

Little pet peeve of mine, were those mandatory fist fights (3 of them if I'm correct) the first is easy enough, but some sections later you must fight a guy in his house surrounded by his gang, and the final boss has another mandatory fist fight. By far the worse crime the developers committed, you must survive those with the weakest character (gameplay wise) and the mechanics are so broken they beat you 9/10 times and have to restart from a few rooms away of the fight. Glad the sequel didn't have any of those

I played this on X360 around 2008 or 2009. I loved Red Dead Revolver and GUN, so I wanted something like that. This is not that lol I remember not liking it because of the "Billy" sections and that damn whip. I was reluctant to play Bound in Blood, but Red Dead Redemption had came out and I played it to death. I needed some more western action, so I bought BiB and thoroughly enjoyed it. MAJOR improvement over this first one.

The only thing I remember about this game from my childhood is when I was reading the manual and it said and I quote: "pull out the bible and pretend to read it to distract your enemies." That was the weirdest thing I had ever read back then, probably still is today.
