Thank you! I've always seen the tone of the poem as slightly regretful, especially when he says 'which I for one failed not to take'. In my mind it's him evaluating that although his consistently nihilistic attitude has helped him through rough times, the fact that he took on this perspective at such a young age may have taken his youth from him. Possibly comparing himself to others around him who he saw aiming high in life, and some of whom managed to achieve it. Has anyone else seen this?
