Its brutal but it works. Rome killed their own soldiers in gruesome fashions if they broke rank and Sparta killed them just for loosing a shield. Persia even used slaves to wear out the enemy and spend their ammo while the more experienced troops had a spear to their backs, similar to what Russia is doing with their criminals now.

The most important indistinguishable sign of "good luck" in the Russian people, is his sadistic cruelty (Maxim Gorky. 1868-1936. Russian writer and playwright)

Effective defense vs “more artillery”…. Let’s use the same logic with food: the food that exists is very effective in quenching the hunger, and the problem is being taken care of, the only minor issue is that there are many more hungry people and that they can always replace the fed people with more hungry people and thus the issue is not solved yet. (Sarcasm, yes.)

0400: hours we hit Russian artillery positions and supply routes, the tremendous effect on the enemy is immediately felt as a calm almost complete silence continued throughout the day. On the 28th of July, however, there was again a break in that calm as the Russians managed to reconstitute themselves and begin to senselessly send wave after wave of soldiers rushing up against our lines in the bloodbath the enemy has been so badly mauled that later that day we were even able to push our position forwards and dig in to occupy the entire area.- excerpts from a German war diary 1941- Russian order of battle hasn't changed in 81 years and neither have the results, just thought I would draw a small comparison.

If I was a Russian man of fighting age who wasn't included in the first mobilization I would be packing my bags and crossing a border somewhere asap. That's not cowardly or unpatriotic, it's plain common sense in the face of total madness.

It's not true and it's something both sides accuse each other of, because it's just propaganda. Both sides are enlisting convicts, it seems to be more widespread within the Ukrainian army however, it seems that convicts are only being used by Wagner on the Russian side. But even then they are not penal battalions(to be fair I don't think they are on either side), they are being recruited to operate within Wagner group. The notion that they are using human wave attacks is pure fabrication with no evidence to support it, and believe me, there would be we have drones everywhere now. There is also far more footage of Ukrainian losing large numbers of men and equipment than Russian, during the Kherson offensive every day I would see one or more clip of a Ukranian convoy being hit or something of that sort. It's less common now but more so in the Donbass rather than the north. Yes Ukraine published some such footage but it's rarer. He also says the north is where most the action is but it's not, they are just launching probing attacks at each other there.

China still uses these tactics as well, it’s very common and at the battle of Chosin reservoir they decimated 95% of task force faith, but they pulled back due to how many losses they had sustained themselves. It’s a very brutal and psychological tactic.

Not really, the contradiction is Russia isn't sure of its clear goal or even of its reasons to start this war and continue it, they've given so many contradictory reasons that it's muddled the narrative. And what the military is doing is hamstrung by Kremlin micromanaging and a lack of a clear unified tactic. On one hand the Russian Army is resorting to block troops and protecting the more experienced troops by having the inexperienced conscripts and criminals at the frontline, while Wagner group operates in a different part of the country and selectively chooses battles it can win and make a propaganda show out of, this way Wagner makes the regular army look even more foolish than they are already and the Wagner group's chief gets more influence and power in the Kremlin.
