I went to the MIT conference when they first started this. And it was clear they didn't know the skill aspect of the game enough to get useful analytics. But ratings are being talked about because the networks care. The NBA is the first pro league with 20 million subscribers on KZbin. And tripled views on its own app. Young and international fans are eating the league up way more than any other league. Other leagues are just enjoying old people stuck in old ways. This is why college presidients are doing anything to get college kids to come to the football games.

Nothing wrong with basketball nerd developing different tactics. But it's gone overboard. Analytics should be ultimately used to develop a playstyle that optimizes what you have, coaches & players and you adjust your playbook as the personnel changes. The problem is GSW wrote the 3pt domination playbook, but they also had 3 of the best jumpshooters in NBA history, it worked for them. The league tried to copy that playstyle without any all time great shooters, it worked for Houston because they had Harden (the System) to make it work but Harden is 1 of a kind the rest of the league can't play that way. All the champions since the Warriors era have played to their strengths, except Boston but they can play that way because they have enough shooters for it and Porzingis is the great equalizer, a true unicorn.

Analytics created cheaper way to look at the game because it gives us a social media stat driven narration of each player especially "stars" that their game film doesn't backed and cannot backed. Thus, getting rid of vets and players with creativity, drive and bag would ruin those narratives that the nba has put itself in the last decades. The bigger problem is, one can only keep adding to the narration until the story doesn't make any sense. hence, NBA is WWE and vice versa. Only difference, WWE at least caters to their fans on whatn they want and it's far more affordable to go to a WWE show than the NBA game.

You’re not missing anything. The game is trash now. All these “skilled” players who don’t know how to play a lick of defense while carrying and traveling every time they touch the ball. I’m sorry but they just aren’t vastly more skilled. They just aren’t. The average three point shooting percentage for the decade of the 90s was 33%-35%. Right now the league wide average is 35% - 36%. That doesn’t show that players are better shooters. They’re basically statistically the same. So they aren’t better shooters. They also play no defense. They have no post up game and zero mid range game. They can’t dribble without carrying and traveling. So how exactly are these guys more skilled when the numbers don’t show that? If they’re so great why do they struggle to average 30ppg especially considering nobody is defending? They don’t box out, they don’t even attempt offensive rebounds. This era is a joke.

Creativity or lack there of is a function of the rules. The current set of rules are not set in stone. There are a few simple changes that can be made that would bring back the mid range game. Lou Will is right about how analytics are a great reference point.. The problem with analytics is it is entirely numbers based. Like like most teams shoot about 50% from the field even if they're just shooting 2s... But it's all about being efficient. So if you shoot 50% from two but you shoot 36% from three you're making more points shooting more 3s. The analytics don't account for the fact that some guys can shoot at a much more efficient clip if they're free to play their game. There's a reason why the most points scored in a game by 1 team wasn't scored recently.... It becomes about efficiency... You're much more likely to score every possession if you're getting lay ups, dunks and easy 2s as compared to threes.

Less about the 3s being shot and more about HOW teams are getting those 3s. The current playbook doesn't allow for multiple options at all 3 levels. The 2015 - 2018 Warriors got their 3s via a multiple option offense, which made it exciting to watch. They tried to get the BEST option using their 3pt scorers. Now the only option is for the 3 and it looks nasty.
@SLICENSLASHКүн бұрын
Yes, it's definitely on the League's Front Office to impose something to create 3Level Scoring again in the NBA. The game is becoming too Flat & lacking variance & dimension. All throughout the history of the league rules or guidelines have been implemented to prevent players or teams from "milking" particular means of dominating the game if they felt it was too repetitive & unappealing to the fans. That's why there's a 5sec Backdown rule, a 3sec in the Paint rule, Why they Widened the Lane, all to keep variety in the styles of play in the league. The same must now be done with 3pt Shooting otherwise there's no reason for teams to Not chase after unlimited 3s at the expense of all other shot types. I like the idea of a 3pt Cap. A collective limit of 30makes from Three for both teams. It doesn't limit how many attempts you can take from 3, or hinder a team from pursuing 3pt line dominance in a game, but it does steer shot selection as it makes teams & players value the quality of their attempts as they recognize there's Not an unlimited amount of 3ptrs made available to get. The mindless shot jacking is what you want to reduce or remove, and bring back the shot variety & creativity of individual players to make things happen on the court.

They are now cornering the market and the lower rating is due to the absence of none paying viewers. A 3 pt lead in todays game is no lead with a few seconds on the clock. The risk is going to overtime. So to defend that one possession lead, it’s better to fowl and give up maximum 2 pts or better yet 1 or none of he misses and regain possession. I started watching the NBA because of Giannis, although LeBron is the one who really got me into it. I don’t think the rise of three-point shooting is the main issue affecting the league. While the points others raise are valid, I believe the NBA needs to focus on expanding its teams and creating pathways for developing talent. Here’s why: In soccer, there are many teams across various leagues, which allows players to develop over time. Some players bloom later in their careers, and lower leagues provide opportunities for growth. This structure keeps talent in the sport and creates more chances for fans to connect with players from their hometowns or communities. The NBA, on the other hand, has a limited number of teams, which means young players with potential often fade out of the league because there’s no system to nurture and retain them. Some argue that the influx of foreign players in the NBA reduces its popularity, but I disagree. The MLS (Major League Soccer) also has many foreign players and continues to grow, just like European soccer leagues. Similarly, there are more American players in soccer and basketball players playing and thriving abroad, and their leagues’ ratings are improving. The NFL, with its large rosters, is a good example of how having more players can attract diverse audiences. When fans see someone representing their state, town, or cultural background, it builds a stronger connection to the league. The NBA needs to create more teams to increase diversity and representation. Having more Latino, White, and other underrepresented players would bring broader appeal. Superstars alone won’t save the NBA’s ratings. To truly develop talent and grow the sport, the league should establish lower leagues. For example, teams that perform poorly during the season could be relegated to a lower league, while top teams from the lower league could be promoted. This kind of system mirrors what works in soccer and would create more opportunities for players to develop and thrive. Right now, it’s easier to become a professional soccer player than to make it in the NBA. Expanding the league and implementing a tiered system could change that and help the NBA reach new heights.

It is so sad to me to see a sport I played and was so much a part of my life completely fall apart. I stopped watching the NBA at least 5 yrs ago. The worst part is it would take drastic measures to fix now. My honest opinion is that the three point line should just be taken out of the game but they aren't going to do that so limiting how many 3's a team can take (like 4) per quarter would be a start. Allow intensive defense to be rewarded again. The game should be intense on BOTH sides of the court. Enforce the rules of the game. The allowed traveling makes the game unwatchable by itself before all the other big problems the game today has.

Maybe the league should make a rule change and cap how many threes a team can attempt per quarter. They can cap it at like 6-8 3pt attempts per quarter by each team .

Im a Laker fan and I swear its hard to watch that offense play. Team has no consistent shooters but still chuck them shits up. Also no boxing out, just ball watch and get suprised when they get outjumped for the board.

I agree with most... Except the end game fouling. Depends on the team. If you don't have any defenders, decent free throw shooters and you not trying to go to OT, good time to foul when up 3 at the end of the game. Especially if you playing against Curry or another shooter

It's really simple: 2 players in the league get ratings, Steph and LeBron. Where do they both play???? On the west coast. People with jobs and lives and families are not staying up to watch a game that starts at 10:30 at night and ends at 1 a.m. Either LeBron or Steph have to move east or central

Also make league pass a 1 stop shop for all the games no blackouts. NBA thinking let's spread out all our games on different networks and then wonder why people don't want to pay.

Its easier on the body for AE to jack up 3s vs getting to the basket. Its easier on the body, 3s is a lazy mans game

The real reason nobody plays defense and their offense system weak a superior triangle offense will destroy all these minds in the NBA show be easier since they call fells all the yime

Coaches and GM’s don’t want to make decisions without having the numbers to back them up and to lay the blame on if things go wrong.
@penkima49235 күн бұрын
That's not true. All coaches run 3-pointer oriented playbooks, even though the numbers say only a select few teams in the league should do that.
@Paul.Burrell5 күн бұрын
Naw, it's the front office forcing coaches to play basketball by the numbers. They won't hire coaches who want to play traditional basketball even if it would win them a ring. Silicon Valley has too much power over everything even this sport.
@penkima49235 күн бұрын
@@Paul.Burrell That doesn't make sense. The numbers say most teams should be playing more traditional style basketball.
@Paul.Burrell5 күн бұрын
@penkima4923 They don't care about what makes sense. They think the attention span of fans is very short, so speeding up the game with pace and more shots will be more exciting. Even the NFL has adopted that mindset, but not to the point of mandating coaches to do stupid stuff.
@penkima49235 күн бұрын
@@Paul.Burrell So, that's why it didn't make sense. You're talking about the league front office. For some reason when you said front office, I thought it was the team's front office forcing the coaches. Which is what they do.

Basketball is more exciting to watch when most teams have a center, 2 forwards, a point guard, and a shooting guard. Then the teams with a bunch of forwards add variety. But every team looks the same and plays the same. Guys switch teams every year so there's no point in team loyalty. Now that the stars are getting older, there's not as much to get excited about

I keep saying they need to put a cap on 3s per team per game. For instance, after 20 three point attempts, all 3 pointers made count as 2 points. They also need to stop calling ticky tack fouls and allow them to play defense. Bring the defense back!
