You like The Vile Eye? His older stuff was a little too emotionless for my taste, but when Analyzing Evil came out, I think he really came into his own. Both commercialy and artistically. He's been compared to Dark5, but I think Vile has a more cynical, bitter sense of humor that really gives the videos a big boost. I think his undisputed masterpiece is Analyzing Evil - Hans Landa, a figure so charistmatic and humorous that most people probably don't pay attention to the symbolism. But they should, because it's not just about the evil of Nazi Germany and the depravity of the secret police, it's also a commentary about the war itself _HEY PAUL!!_

Ellis has stated that he disliked the idea that Patrick was gay. Ellis being gay has caused some to make the speculation. And he disliked that because he found it insulting to him as a writer.
@JohnWilliams-wl9px
@JohnWilliams-wl9px 4 ай бұрын
Ellis did himself no favor with that theory since he said he considered American Psycho “the most autobiographical novel of his”. Likely was just meant to be a dark joke to get people to stop asking him what is and isn’t real.

I'm glad he said he found it insulting. Talented writers tend to work very hard to avoid inserting themselves (or events from their own lives) directly into their works...otherwise why not just write a fictionalized autobiography? The difference between _"write what you know"_ and _"write about yourself"_ is paper-thin, and it's how you differentiate the real talent from the mediocre bile. Unfortunately, modern Hollywood is filled to the brim with narcissistic hacks who love to insert themselves, their beliefs, their past interpersonal conflicts, etc. into every creative work they vomit out...as if the audience is supposed to function as their freakin' therapist. Talented writers are a dying breed.

A fun fact about the bloody sheets in the movie: the dry cleaners are apparently trying to tell him that there's no stains on his sheets, which is something that's only understandable if you understand Cantonese(?) Not that Patrick notices. The cleaners cease to exist the moment he stops berating them.

I honestly always thought that most of Patrick Bateman's kills were hallucinations that he was having due to the end of the movie. When he went into the apartment and it's sparkly clean with a fresh coat of white paint, it threw me for a loop. What the apartment owner said to him made me change my mind though. When she says "you're not supposed to be here...I think you should leave." it makes me think that she knows Patrick killed all the people she found in that place. Rather than call it into the police and potentially deal with a legal nightmare, she would rather clean the place up and make it as if it never happened.

One thing that wasn't mentioned here, in the novel near the end, Patrick gets into a taxi and the driver recognizes his face from a wanted poster and thinks about turning him in. Instead he steals Patrick's watch and kicks him out of the cab. So I think some of it was definitely real. I'd like to say what i think is real but I'd have to go back and read them and see if anything seems off

Something seems off in just about every scene where Patrick kills people and in a lot of scenes. The way he kills people is a little off and impossible. In one scene, Patrick is dragging a body in a travel bag and a trail of blood is visible, but then a second later the trail of blood is not there.

In the novel, Patrick Bateman killed around 100 people. He also didn't kill the homeless man, but instead, blinded him. In the novel, Patrick's nervous breakdown was more chaotic. He went in and out of stores eating random food, in which it caused him to vomit, further leading to his mental collapse and confession to his lawyer. Reading the book allowed me to understand that Patrick Bateman is a Psychopathic-Misanthrope.💯

If you like Bateman you should look into his Scottish counterpart Bruce Robertson from Irving Welsh's novel Filth as well as the 2013 film adaption starring James McAvoy. He really is just like Bateman in a lot of ways in that he's defined by his status among his peers and how his narcissistic psychosis harms everyone who gets close to him. McAvoy gives a really great performance in the movie, but the way Welsh writes the character in a similarly ruthless first person perspective is truly terrifying at points while also being darkly hilarious like American Psycho.

It is so fascinating how a film like American Psycho went from being a relatively unknown and obscure horror thriller of the early 2000s, to becoming one of the most iconic stables in pop culture, touching on areas like consumer culture, materialism, psychological horror, ambiguity, curated lifestyles, and 80s yuppie culture. Patrick Bateman's iconic status, I feel, is greatly carried by both Christian Bale's performance, and how the character represents a growing sentiment of disillusionment with obsession with status, appearance, power, and happiness, but hides the empty veneer of what he truly is: a narcissistic psychopath who is utterly insane, and frighteningly real, as if you have seen him on social media, Reality TV, etc.
@brainiac.computer
@brainiac.computer 4 ай бұрын
I’ve always found it unironically funny how people tend to view Bateman in a positive light. When Bateman himself is a narcissistic, murdering psychopath who holds the most abhorrent views on those he sees as being beneath him (i.e. minorities and women). A caricature, and satire, of the 80’s yuppie culture that Bret Easton Ellis grew up around and hated. Now, a lot of people do use Bateman as a meme (for humors sake), but a lot of those memes focus on his materialism and physical appearance, as if he’s a man worth emulating.

Of course, the book was already optioned for a film adaptation and was known because of how messed up it is. The film is what really made it popular and turned Patrick Bateman into a Sigma Male/Literally Me character as well as the source of memes.

i love the little touch of the Les Miserables poster of Colette at the beginning of the film, though it's left entirely out of the movie it has a large role in the book as many characters talk about it and … ah, see you got to it. Love, love, love the overwritten and dramatic introductions Victor Hugo wrote, which you quote there at the end. it is so overwrought and dramatic, and yet so intensely humane and touching coming from a man who is boldly saying slavery is bad … shows you, regardless of how we think we have so improved, we think in terms of how far we have to go … and yet, how far yet we have to go!

You know what's funny? I reread American Psycho this year, and all I could think during Patrick's long-winded inner monologs is that he sounds like someone on the spectrum. I myself am autistic, and when I was in art school, I befriended another autistic girl who could, at a glance, tell you the designer of every article of clothing on a person, even if it was just some generic no-name brand from Walmart or Target.

Look up the brains scans of clinical psychopaths. Not look up the brains scans of those with ASD. Almost identical in regards to lack of neural pruning. You are correct. And I’ve been trying to explain this to people FOR DECADES. True psychopathy is an ASD. Sociopathy is bitch bc their brains are OVERLY neurally pruned. By trauma. Psychopathy is born. As is ASD. And they’re super nearly identical.

yeah. He's been in a few stinkers but even in those I never felt like he was phoning it in. He definitely takes his work seriously. Apparently he was turned down for this one more than once but basically fought for it for months bordering on harassment till they gave him another shot at some point and he just killed it (no pun intended). There's a few other actors I could maybe imagine or that would at least be interesting, but there's something just so unyieldingly phony but also disturbing about his depiction that is just perfection. I've read some of the book but didn't get too far. Not sure I want to finish it really. I also like Willem Defoe's inclusion as well. Their weird little mindgames back and forth are pretty entertaining. There's a reason this movie has such a following now. It's just brilliantly done.
