Yeah, there is around 8 novels that cover the story of Woodbury and the governors rise and fall, and the town continues to thrive after him, and the story continues without him. I was actually impressed that The Vile Eye had read the novels, because it gives way more information into who Brian/Phillip is, and most people who analyze his character haven't read the novels. Something about the TV Governor you didn’t mention that I feel is important After he panicked and murdered Martinez, we see Philip crying to himself alone that night and immediately trying to sneak out of camp with his new family. He almost certainly does this to ESCAPE that temptation and keep himself from becoming the Governor again, but the road is totally blocked and forces him to go back. Furthermore, he TRIES to just stay on the sidelines, but Pete (the new leader) almost immediately suggests to Philip that he should help him lead since he has experience and charisma. That just proves Pete to be weak willed and that’s the final straw that forces him to kill him and take over to “protect his family” since he thinks Pete is weak and the camp is in danger (which of course is true in both cases). His outright attempt to run away from himself after having that slip up so he can save his new family and new life from who he once was is SUPER interesting to me and a missed opportunity to talk about here.
@Xeakerr5 ай бұрын
Yes I just wrote a comment about that too. That was a very Important scene for the character, weird that he forgot to mention that. It was really sad, like fate did not want him to go. And the way he looks in the car is saying the same. Martinez Camp was full of weak people, no one fit to be the leader, so in the end it falls to him again to be in charge.
@kristijan125 ай бұрын
Ok, but tell me this, why is Pete weak willed to be seeking council from someone who has a lot of experience? It is often said that wise leaders surround themselves with smart people whose council they can hear and decide what to do.
@quaidemckenzie61465 ай бұрын
@@kristijan12 I'd say Pete isn't weak for that. More that Brian doesn't believe that leadership is to be shared. A flaw of Brians not Petes.
@frankunbaphomet3206Ай бұрын
I remember the group he finds martinez back in had asked the governor TWICE for help leading the people. He definitely didnt want to be one after what happened but his ego is crazy large and just asking him to be helping as leader reminded him of how weak others are in his mind. He was perfectly fine being on the side up until martinez and the other guy asked him. Govenor clearly thinks there should be one leader. And if people ask him for help on that, hed rather take charge alone
@josephmatthews7698Ай бұрын
Its Brian's flaws not Pete that ends Pete's life. He's completely warped in his head what a leader should be and proves that by being such a terrible leader. A good leader is unafraid to seek counsel. It was Brian's warped ideals and ego that doomed not only himself but the innocents in Woodbury. Never trick yourself into thinking Brian was a capable leader. Sure he was charismatic and bold but these are not the only qualities of a good leader. It didn't take much to topple both of Brian's laughable house of cards he had created. All it took was one person asking questions to ruin everything. The Governor was an ironic title because he truly was one of the worst leaders in all of twd but the writers did an excellent job making him sympathetic. But don't confuse sympathy for competence.

Giving the T.V. version a possible redemption arc, even doomed as it is to failure because of his inner demons, was a smart move on the part of the writers. Dangle it in front of us, have us wondering if he'll have the fortitude to change for the better, then rip it all away so we understand why it was never going to happen. Some people just have done too much, like MacBeth, to turn away from the paths they've chosen. The Governor is one.

Something about Brian actively wanting to die at the hands of his brother after his niece dies is so powerful. Morbid, sad, and...weirdly kind of sweet. My favorite kind of horror. That even at the very end, as he goes numb from the beating and can barely think anymore, he just surrenders and lets himself die, clearly feeling he deserves it, and wants his brother to let out his pain.

Seriously, they’re so good, especially read by Fred Berman on audiobook. After the death of the Governor, where Robert Kirkman is no longer involved, the series really drops off in quality, but even the first couple that follow Lilly Caul afterward are still decent.

@opti60195 ай бұрын
@@UCannotDefeatMyShmeat If you’re talking about the books that continue with Lilly after the Governor dies, not really. Most of them take place in southern Georgia and northern Florida, opposite to where Rick and the gang went, so they never encounter really much of anything from the Comics, which was a shame. It kind of reminds of the Telltale’s The Walking Dead game, but with all of the bad and none of the redeeming qualities. The novels are predictable, lacking in depth, and kind of comical in their peril and violence, a lot of which the characters don’t really take the time to react to save for brief sessions of panic and mourning. For example, at one point there is a child who literally kills their own parent because said parent goes off the deep end and is about to kill Lilly, and the kid, likes, cries for a bit then it’s literally never mentioned again. I still found some enjoyment in all but the last two novels, though. Old Bob the medic stays as a character and is great, and there’s one really interesting overarching villain for a few of the books. And Fred Berman still does a great job.

I don't think he WANTED the leadership, he felt forced to it to secure the safety of his new family. In the end, he realizes what he is about to become and tries to escape. But walkers blocking the way, it is like fate does not want it.

@@vegitohaze2081 Damn, when you lay it out like that, ok good point. I never really thought he was "evil". More like a guy well suited for the new world that they now inhabit, and what Rick eventually becomes. But yeah, i guess you have a very good point

My wife and I watched every episode of AMCs Walking Dead on Sunday when it aired for six seasons… I hated(and therefore loved) The Governor as a character. Had I read the graphic novels or novelization before, I think I would’ve hated(truly hated) him. Thanks for the synopsis of the literary characters, it was really interesting to hear the original intention vs. my memories of one of my favorite series of all time

This is awesome. Rewatching the show, and I was watching and like damn the governor is an evil SOB, I wonder if there’s a video about him. And there isn’t so I’m like wow that’s surprising, but here we go. So many video opportunities in the walking dead universe….

Video Game Villain Suggestions: Analyzing Evil: Sephiroth (Final Fantasy 7) Analyzing Evil: Vergil (Devil May Cry) Analyzing Evil: Tohru Adachi (Persona 4) Analyzing Evil: Characters and Themes of Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne

Nocturne would be amazing though for Lucifer he should get his own Analyzing Evil video I think.
@wesleygriffiths87485 ай бұрын
@@nicholasbodo4327honestly, it’s debatable if Lucifer is even evil in that game, given that the Angels are arguably far, far worse. Chiaki and the Manikins, what YHVH did to Hijiri, pretty much dwarfs anything Lucifer actually does in the game.
@nicholasbodo43275 ай бұрын
@@wesleygriffiths8748 Lucifer does corrupt the protagonist into becoming the Demi-Fiend & it’s left ambiguous what his new world order will be after Demi-Fiend ends existence itself & there’s implication that SMT V might be a secret sequel to Nocturne.

@Lauriestrode19785 ай бұрын
The governor is a much better character and villain than Negan. Negan can atleast be reasoned with and he can change, as he did. Negans also more rational and level headed which can make him scarier but he still had a good side to him, but the governor was pure evil. After watching your video tho the governor is a truly damaged and broken man and feel bad for him, after your analysis, it becomes clear that the governor was forced into this through so much trauma and I can’t really call him outright evil. Great video analysis man!

Thank you vile I've been asking for years man amd this video did an awesome job comparing the show and comic I prefer the show version but I still really think his a good villian in the comics

At 50 seconds into the video, it shall be stated that the Governor was Far and Away the most interesting character in the television series 'the walking dead'! Neegan was good enough, up to a point. Thanks for discussing him.

Homelander’s a great villain ngl. He has the face of a movie star, the power of a god, the influence of a politician, and the mental state of an abused child
@MistahJay75 ай бұрын
Phillip didnt want the power again though. He killed Martinez cause he was doubting himself on wether can keep everyone safe especially cause he was talking about his new family that he found. "I dont want it damn it I DONT WANT IT I DONT WANT I I DONT WANT IT" He also did try to escape with the family knowing what was going to happen to him but couldnt and was stucklol

@laynedoyle16135 ай бұрын
Think you pretty much hit the nail on the head the only thing I would say is even after Martinez’s death I feel the Phillip was very much still trying to stray from the governor I say this because even when he was trying to take the prison he at least made and attempt to take it without killing and I 100% believe he would of let Hershel and Michonne live if Rick would of surrendered and although this character was already beyond redemption I believe Phillip died the minute he put down Megan and delivers his kill them all speech. Sorry if this is to nerdy I’m normally not fanatic for this sort of thing but this character has always stood out for me and the performance David brings is in my opinion well above the rest of the cast.
