(Also on a slightly different note, X and Y's real weakness is that after a vibrant and exciting journey there's just not much to do in the postgame. It would have really benefited from keeping Black and White 2's features like the White Treehollow challenge or the Pokemon World Tournament, which added a lot of longevity to your completed game)

I was really disappointed about that too. They sadly only tend to really release good post game stuff later on in the Generation be they updated versions (Yellow, Emerald, Platinum), sequels (Black 2 and White 2), or remakes (Fire Red/Leaf Green and Heart Gold/Soul Silver). The Looker Sidequests in the post game were really nice though. In fact I think the writing in that part of the game was better than the main storyline at times.

I only had one real issue with Pokemon X and Y: The route where the Pokemon are constantly burrowing underground to fight you, who are impossible to avoid and almost always have Arena Trap. That was just a horrible idea on Gamefreak's part.

I played Firered a couple of times. I would always catch and evolve some pokemon in the first half of the game, because Professor Oak's aides give you rewards for working on your pokedex. But at 60 species for the National Dex (and access to Islands 4-7 in the post-game), I stopped, and I had my team of six pokemon which I trained from the point I caught them to the end of the game. I never thought of how they could be trained and evolved around the point they were found.

+iBenjamin1000 -yah. I always had my starter, a water or fire pokemon (depending on my starter), a psychic type, an electric type, a ground type, and a pokemon that could use fly. If there was something that I thought was cool later, I'd ditch one of my more boring "friends" and pick it up, but my team was never constantly evolving. that might be a fun way to play, actually

An interesting perspective! I never really considered the relationship between evolution levels and progression through the story line. It's pretty obvious at the start of red & blue (and/or firered & leafgreen) with the dual bug lines, but I hadn't ever thought that that basic concept was extrapolated throughout the game. Thanks for sharing!

I'd say the restaurants are necessary in x and y since they are the best way to make money and lvl your pokemon besides the battle chateau, restaurant wow costs me 10000 to get in but when played well enough i get the balm mushrooms and sell them for 15000, give one of your pokemon the amulet coin and you get around 9000 back in money from the trainers you fight, thats well worth the effort if you ask me, also my pokemon around lvl 80 gain an average of 2 lvls in one sitting

Counter. Point. While you bring a up a 'three times longer main story', Pokemon X and Y are probably already some of the most painfully large games in the series, content-wise. I actually found out my used 3DS didn't have a SIM card in it precisely because X and Y won't even boot without one, and there's a reason for that. The games strains the 3DS to its limits. You could add more content, but it would likely have to be in postgame because so many assets are already in place. And that's not even going into the size of Kalos compared to previous regions. Kalos has way more intermediary towns between the first few gyms, way more events per stage in the journey, and a giant three-dimensional town in the center that doesn't control or play like any other part of the game world and really is large enough to get lost in. There's a taxicab service so you can find key locations in it. Put bluntly, X and Y are fighting space constraints already. There's also kind of a weird concept here with looking at X and Y as sloppy, or complaining about the length of time it takes to grind up pokemon for the pokedex. In previous generations- particularly R/B/Y (which FireRed is modeled on)- the goal of the game was to complete your pokedex. The professor gives you your pokedex and sends you off entirely because he wants you to fill it- the gyms are literally obstacles that keep you from progressing to the next area, and the pokemon league itself is just a rube-goldberg device to get access to Cerulean Cave to catch Mewtwo. The game was a streamlined track built around a single goal- and it also had the advantage of having only 150 monsters, and only needing to explore the game's core leveling mechanics (and forcing trade evolutions because pokemon was first built to encourage social play with link cables, etc.) X and Y, by contrast? You're told that the goal is what you make of it. Sycamore tells you to go research Mega-Evolution and the game makes that particularly fun by giving you shiny awesome powerful pokemon if you pursue it, but it's built more to be a really fun world to just run around in. The reason for the high number of pokemon species is to curb a massive problem from previous games, where walking into a patch of grass would infinitely generate the same three pokemon for six hours while trying to catch something particularly rare. Rare catches are still rare, but now you have some variety in what you encounter even in a single area, and it's very possible to almost build teams up from a single location's pokemon. The Exp. share and post-game leveling aren't an example of sloppy design, they're an example of the old mechanics simply no longer working in the kind of expansive world that Gamefreak was trying to build. Kalos is supposed to feel vibrant, and alive, and larger than any previous region by orders of magnitude. The game succeeds by giving it that feel and making the pokemon world feel less like a journey through a set of goalposts and more like an actual journey. To summarize, the game may be orders of magnitude harder if you're a Trevor-esque completionist (and the pokedex has been a completionist goal since third gen., let's be honest here) but it's probably the first one I can remember actively catering to a Shauna playstyle.

I have leaf green and love the game. But I beat the elite four, caught a legendary moltres (killed the other two birds, because I didn't think of saving before "talking" to them) and moved on to pearl. Now I restarted the game, and realized that there are new features on the pearl version I really take for granted. Switching Pokemon mid battle with knowledge of what your opponent is about to send out next? Unheard of! In pearl the opponent tells you who they're sending out next and you are given a chance to switch accordingly. There are two day cares. One takes only one Pokemon at a time, the other two. Breeding is unavailable until after beating the elite four! I think the leafgreen version feels harder. There are tougher mechanics, and leveling up feels tougher. There are hardly berries in the game at all, and there aren't many side ventures. Like the contests and pal park stuff. I like how there are fewer Pokemon though, and I like the leafgreen storyline better. In pearl the bad guys feel less threatening, they don't really do much... I'm comparing it to pearl because that's the only one I've beat on ds. The newest I have is black, but I really like heart gold. The mechanic of having your Pokemon follow you everywhere is one that I love, and really hoped it'd be an option in x and y. Anyway, just my two cents XD

also I didn't use the EXP share until the post game, I switched out my core team nine times (as in i started with six, changed those six, and changed three of those last six) and, while the game was challenging, it was CERTAINLY not painfully punishing due to that. Even with the EXP share off, so long as you're catching pokes that you find near your team's level as you progress through the game, it actually works pretty well.

I love that there are so many choices of Pokémon to raise in X/Y, heck with Super Training they even give you the option to raise them competitively from the very beginning! I feel all the choice they implemented really helped to keep longtime Pokémon players like me completely invested, and with a lot of things being completely optional also prevented them from alienating newer players. They struck a perfect balance imo.

I think part of why I've never burned out of Pokémon is that I always play with 6 Pokémon. And ONLY SIX FOR THE WHOLE GAME. That meant that while most Pokémon in a region are "oh yeah, that exists" there are 6 or 12 for every generation where I see them and I think "Damn straight".

I am really waiting until earlier locations also scale to current party levels/trainer experience. It's kind of happened in the games where you can have rematches against NPCs since they usually "trained up" their pokemon as well, but I wish wild pokemon would do the same as well.

For that matter... Doduo is a full 9 levels away from evolving on the route where it shows up... and it is not getting those within the route without grinding. Not trainer battles, not just catching them all. You have to grind for Exp.

Does anyone actually play Pokemon in the way you described at the beginning? Training a Pokemon from a lower level makes it stronger in the long run, which contradicts the idea that you should be training newly caught monsters as you encounter them. It's interesting that the game's designed like that when most people I know just blast through the story and worry about the Pokedex later.

The biggest difference between this and other pokemon games is that rather than encouraging you to catcht them all, it encourages you to catch the ones you like the best, develop a relationship with those pokemon, and so on. It's only competitive battlers that do that systematic stuff.

I would have to disagree with you on one major point: the amount of pokemon in one area being too high. I personally loved the fact that there were so many pokemon in one area. It gave me more of a reason to explore and see all of the available pokemon as well as being able to choose pokemon for my party from a much more diverse set. But I also don't use the same style of play that you do and don't really know that many people who do. It's interesting to see that you could catch all of the pokemon on a route and level them up then move on to others in the next route but I tend to find the right pokemon for a team and carefully train and collect the ones that I picked throughout the game rather then catching them all. But all in all, very entertaining video and it was nice to hear things from a different perspective.

4:57 um.... Digi, I do respect you a lot but... *NO*. Just...no XD actually the smallness of the region and the repetitiveness of the different areas are one of the very few problems of this game. A problem that was also present in gen 5, at least before B/W 2. The only thing that really stood out was the fable-like area in and around Laverre city. That aside, I'm kinda bugged at how they MUST always go though some sort of traditional checklist to include all possible ambiance variations they can (Beach? check. Forest? check. Big city? Check. Desert? check. Snowy town? Ehhh...yeah, I think we can squeeze that in as well.). As a result it all of comes off as some sort of dense collage... I mean it's ok to have the scenery vary throughout the journey, but it's not exactly a crime to have a region that still has a common theme to it that keeps it somewhat cohesive. Like Sinnoh, which was all kept centered around this one huge mountain, and therefore had the overall aspect of a cold, northern land. And Hoenn, which as a whole could be seen as one big tropical archipelago.

As someone who's got their own way of playing Pokemon (I'm breeding my fourth pokemon with a 5 31 IV spread) I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of subtlety they put into everything. I ended up trading away BOTH my everstone AND my Destiny Knot, and I thought I was fucked until I found out that there were ways to get BOTH of these things in excess. Things like this, as well as the small changes to how stuff works internally, sort of tell me that this game is actually really polished and..

Well, I think the new "gotta catch them all" is going to be extremely different with the new "pokemon box" feature when it is completely ready. Players will start keeping their favorite pokemon instead of starting over again and again. Even with older games where you could just trade over pokemon it generally required hours of work and 2 systems but now you can just keep your pokemon with you. Maybe it'll ensure players get closer with their teams when they've had the same 6 for 4-5 generations.

Pokemon X is great but definitely not as memorable as Platinum. Well, at least to me. It took me like two months to just beast all the gyms, and another three and like 20 tries to beat the Elite Four. I think the only way I did it was because my cousin traded me a level 100 Toxicroak. But in X, I beat the game in about a week or so. I can still remember most of the trainers and their team I couldn't get passed. I also loved the underground feature! Spent hours in there with friends building a base, whatever. I was younger then and I guess its like childhood (I'm 14, played Diamond/Pearl/Platinum when I was 8-7) and that's probably why those are my favorites.

I wanna be able to ride my Lairon. I want them to make it so that you can use any appropriately sized quadruped and ride around on it. Preferably alongside the return of pokemon following you around. I want a system wherein I can have my shiny Gardevoir follow me wherever I go. But if I need to go faster, I open my box, switch Scolipede into the front slot, turn around and talk to it, select "Yes" when it asks if you want to ride it, and then go off to the races on my giant millipede. ....... And I kind of want that to replace HMs. Make it so that you don't have to teach a pokemon a move to be able to swim, fly, dig, what have you. Where, instead, you just have to have that pokemon in your party, to a point where you can turn around and talk to it to achieve various effects. Such as talking to a Wartortle to go across water, A Flygon to fly or dig, a Scyther to maim trees, or what have you. And, specifically, have it so that the size matters. Wherein if a pokemon's too small to sit on the back of, you instead use them as a sort of kickboard, and if a pokemon's like a foot tall at its biggest you hold onto its talons when it's flying instead of sitting on its back. Which would still be ridiculous, but that's never going to go away.

I think the crap-ton of Pokemon catch-able in this game is actually pretty convenient. It makes it all the more possible to fill up your pokedex, y'know? Not to mention it makes the Kalos region feel that much more immersive and huge. It's like in a real life Pokemon world, I'd expect there to be tons of different Pokemon wherever you go :D

FYI Digi. The EXP Share also hurts the player. Specifically ones who want to EV Train. Cuz if a Pokemon gets experience they get the EVs from those Pokemon. So the EXP Share is also a bad thing for people playing competitively. Game Freak wanted to make X and Y a lot more competitively in terms of Pokemon and it showed through what they added. Making breeding easier, adding super training, etc. So while I agree that making the story easier is kinda bad with that said the other things you can do like play competitively, find mega stones for mega evos, catch all the pokes, etc. makes it all worth it.
@mjangelvortex
@mjangelvortex 10 жыл бұрын
The EXP Share can also help a person that EV trains. A person can EV train almost an entire team at once with Hoard Battles and the EXP Share on. It makes EV training a whole lot easier and faster once you get used to it. It's definately a lot faster than EV training one Pokemon at at time through wild battles or Super Training. It's saved me a lot of time actually. You just got to organize the parts in your party that you want to EV train in specific stats. For example, after breeding a lot of Jolly and Timid sweepers, hoard battle a bunch of Wingull to get Speed EVs from the EXP Share.

Oof. I definitely think I'm in the category of players who really sees things for their whole, and I thought this game was a whole lot of awkward. You made the point early on that the games were balanced around getting the pokedex, and that training Pokémon around the same gym would take around the same time. X and Y stabs this in the face. You can get a Bagon, which evolves into it's 3rd stage at Level 55, before beating the 2nd Gym. It was pretty cool at first, but by the time I got to the midgame Shelgon really dragged it's feet and became really difficult to train. Lots of the Pokedex is really poorly spaced as well. 150, or at least their preevos, can be caught before the 2nd Gym. This section of the game got me hyped for a lot of these kind of thick chunks in the campaign, but really fell flat when any time between the 3rd and 7th gym besides lumiose city felt super flat. (which I honestly still dislike because I lost my file to the save bug there early on) Also, I think a lot of the interesting interactions ingame are so small and quick that I can never really appreciate them. Take riding Pokémon, which honestly seemed super cool in the trailers. Skiddo gets you 2 items within about a minute, and Rhyhorn and Mamoswine are riddled with encounters, which hurt a lot after hearing about and never experiencing those badass Rhyhorn Races your mom is apparently good at. It's midnight so I should stop ranting about Pokémon.

One thing I think you should acknowledge, Digi, is that due to the volume of pokemon that now exist in comparison to the original 150, they've dropped the motto "gotta catch 'em all", simply because it is a much more difficult task to achieve than it was back in the day. So while your arguments about the game being centered around leveling up pokemon in order to catch them all, I feel like the majority of players nowadays don't even make that their goal anymore. They just enjoy the game.

I think some of the new features are great, however I'm still confused with this whole friend system. In past Pokemon games such as Black and White and Diamond and Pearl they added features and things to do in game with your friends besides battling, such as the cave system as well as the whole dream realm thing in Black and White. In this game I don't think there is anything like this from what I've seen. Also the whole passerby thing is confusing. That is all. (>*.*)>

Finally, someone who praises the game for what it is and doesn't hate on it for being so easy!

Well being easy was not the problem of these game it was in the end they felt unfinished that's all the story had great potential but in the end it was lacklustre and the game sometimes felt like genwunner fan service

I dont get why people hate the improved EXP share. It was such a waste of my time to train a full team because i could only use it on ONE pokemon out of 6 and doing the elite four over and over again just for one pokemon was a waste of my time. It makes making a full team with the best stats all level 100 so much better and funner because now you can work with all kinds of pokemon because making them perfect is easy and simple.

I'm still partial to Pokémon Yellow. lol I am curios though. Will this work with an Older DS? I'm not going to shell out for a 3DS so I can gripe about the Pokémon. One was shaped like a key ring for goodness sake. These people are running out of ideas. Well that kinda turned into a rant.

I wouldn't say Team Flare were dumb, but they certainly weren't as thought out as previous villains... I mean, coming after a game where the villains were essentially PETA propagandists with deeply hidden mal-intent but truely believed they were doing the right thing... That's hard to top. Although, I can't say they tried too hard with the whole "We're stylish therefore geneside"... a bit darker than the usual if you think about it...

True, but EV's are built directly by the game designers, whereas "gotta catch em all" is constructed by marketers looking to push an appeal that will give their game an edge over other games.

I disagree. EVs DO subtly encourage that playstyle, but there are plenty of things that encourage the playstyle he described, most notably being the commonality of pokemon of types that counter upcoming Gyms in the routes directly beforehand. And besides, playing through the game scrambles your EVs, you only get ~85 in each stat, which equates to about ~22 stat points *by level 100*. For comparison, having 10 more of a base stat makes about the same difference if *all your IVs are 0.*

Dear Princess Celestia, Today I found out I like the same exact things as Digi. That's it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go catch some more Luvdiscs on Route 12 to harvest heart scales to give to the move relearner to have my Pokemon relearn some moves to... Bye! ---Dash Ketchup

The sad thing about Team Flare is (I really don't think this is a spoiler because who their leader is becomes so blindingly obvious) Lysandre was actually a legitimate villain to me, someone I loved to hate. It's a shame that the entire rest of his team was such a bunch of bumbling jackasses that they were all easily rofl-stomped by not only their own ineptitude, but through a generation that broke the EXP Share item. XD

Honestly I quit playing U I a reason. There was just this disconnect the went on. I just got bored. It didn't give me that pokemon feeling that I got from previous games. It just didn't feel real to me.
