Analyzing Roblox's Anti-UGC Movement

On paper, UGC sounds like the perfect program. Roblox's most talented creators can upload items that they think look good, and make them happy. But in practice, a large part of the Roblox community believes it has a few flaws. This week's video is a summary of every single one, valid or not, that I could find.
DISCLAIMER: I'm not a total UGC hater. I have some problems with the program, which I include in this video, but not every issue listed here is one I agree with.

i... can't get behind the idea of calling ugc creators "lazy" for having recolors. it's like calling clothing companies "lazy" for havin one shirt in multiple colors, except instead of a whole company it was only one single person who was like "what if someone likes this item but needs it in this color instead??" even if they make extra profit from it, it's not hurting anyone to have a different color available, it's just giving everyone more options. i like options

I don't even understand the argument that "they're making 10 times the profit that they would have made if they'd just released 1 mesh!!" Like???? Yeah??? That's how business works??? You make more money if you have more items available??? And why is it a bad thing for ugc creators to make more money?? Why don't you want them to make profit? Why is the fact that they made more than one option a problem to you?? Since when is more options + more profit for the artists behind those options shady? Wtf does he mean "it leaves a bad taste in your mouth"

Honestly I'm fairly certain that my avatar's outfit is 100% UGC, I just wear what I think looks good

Same, I'm a 2011er who just got back into the game last year after 5 years away and I love a lot of the UGC content to the point that I've switched almost entirely to UGC items on my current main, I feel so much more free the create an outfit the way I truly want to than I did as a kid stuck to tix items in the catalog although I do feel there is just way too much UGC content at this point On my original main though I do stick to just 2011-13 tix hats and stuff for the outfits

I really don't like most UGC items because it's influenced by the bad playerbase, as well as the other unanimous reasons. Therefore, I mostly wear Roblox-original items, but I occasionally wear one UGC item for one of my avatar costumes.

UGC lets you have stuff that Roblox wouldn't normally make, but you have to remember that this is the internet and bad apples are everywhere

yeah. i’ve had to sift thru lots and lots of slop, i’m an old player, my account being made in 2011, i really don’t like to change my avatar. so honestly i just really get accessories like tails and ears and a few other things, with me still using r6 and robloxian 2.0, i hate the highly realistic faces and “jelly” like faces that have been cropping up everywhere and basically slot them all into the “online dater” category, since there’s no way normal people would wear those freaky faces. so my avatar is basically what’d you find in 2013-14 mixed with some updated accessories. i hate HATE the slims and avatars with those freaky makeup realistic faces and stuff so whenever i see them in games i just insult them and they’re always like “if i’m ugly then what are you??” i’m not an online dater buddy, and actually look good 😂

To be fair, roblox is a studio of people making assets, ugc is just young adults and teenagers contesting to make the most profit out of items rather then valuing the quality of their products.

i really don't understand why people try to give flak to UGC creators for making 10 copies of the same asset with different textures because when you go to a store and buy a shirt, you don't dye the shirt to the color you want in the store they have 10 different colors of the same shirt and you pick the one you like the most it's the same thing with flag pins, why would you make 200 or so slightly different flag pin models just so each country can have it's own "unique" pin when you cane just re-use the same one for every flag? same thing with hairs, too, if they only made black but you wanted the same hair in blonde or pink you'd be screwed

Honestly most of the UGC hate tends to stem from issues of the Roblox community being awful rather than UGC itself. There are three main reasons I love UGC. Firstly, I love UGC because of the sheer limitless posibility it brought to Roblox avatars, which has allowed hairs for minority groups which previously hadn't had any of their hairstyles represented on Roblox. Secondly, I love watching traders get mad at their pixels getting devalued. Finally, I love watching trademarks get trashcanned by UGC creators; i am not a fan of trademarks. Yeah sure, there are A LOT of ugly items but those are relatively easy to avoid. You did bring up some good points in this video though, such as the death of sales and the STAR program. I do have my criticisms of UGC though, such as how it has contributed to Robloxs online dating plague.

Traders have been an integral part of the Roblox community since the trading system was introduced over a decade ago. I fail to see how the creation of close replicas of previously released limited items is beneficial to either the UGC community or the trading community. As a former trader who invested significant time in acquiring limited items, it is disheartening to see them become nearly obsolete. I don't oppose the concept of UGC, as long as it is implemented in a controlled environment, but Roblox aims to enable everyone to become a UGC creator, and that, frankly, concerns me.

one of my main gripes with ugc is the roblox artstyle is practically dead except for a handfull or two of ugc creators because people just take their artstyle and put it in roblox instead of mixing it with roblox or trying to make something new in the artstyle

Based. I think a lot of roblox users are very elitist and don't want other "less wealthy" players to have access to cool looking avatar items because it makes them feel less special. They want to be the only ones with the ability to look cool so they can feel rich and important. And it upsets them to see all the "peasants" who can only afford small amounts of robux at a time being able to make avatars that look just as awesome (if not more awesome) than their own, and at a fraction of the cost. I'm so sorry your ugly digital hat is no longer the coolest thing on the block, maybe you should find some other priorities.

I personally don't like ugc because I feel like when Roblox uploaded an item before ugc existed, it brought alot of hype, that doesn't happen anymore. I also think it's bad because if you for example buy an item, and the ugc creator does something bad irl, people might think you supports him because you just happen to own the item. I also don't like it because I feel like it's badly moderated. I also feel like knowing roblox uploaded the item makes it feel higher quality and that that UGC had no good reason to exist in the first place (in my opinion) just like rthro. But that's just my opinions about the matter. But I think you wrapped together the video pretty good, because the matters you brought up is why most people who disslike UGC disslikes it Good video overall. Deserves more views tbh

personally, i love ugc. it offers creativity and you can look pretty good without breaking the bank. lets be real here, most people arnt gonna want to put down a loan just for a hat in a lego game. i tend to favor avatars that actually look decant and not like someone just throw something on because it was expensive. i understand if you hate ugc for the playerbase, but if you hate ugc for the playerbase, you dont hate ugc, you hate the players. and thats a respectful opinion . i joined roblox in 2012, and although i have nostalgia for old roblox, that does not mean i prefer it

As someone who has been playing Roblox since 2008, I never understood the hatred for UGC. Baby me would have LOVED to be able to make my own hats, and I was excitedly awaiting the release of the UGC program ever since the first rumors started spreading about it.

The reason i dont like ugc is because the items on there are really low effort, and a lot of them are just made to grab as much money as possible since most of them just take inspiration from whatever is trendy at the time. People have been complaining for so long how bad Roblox is at making item recently and yet here they are, contributing to the problem. Also there are a lot of ugc items designed to be for trolls or to be disgusting and creepy but they are not done in a good way, they just look ugly. Its kinda like tf2 warpaints, people just make whatever the hell they want with complete disregard for the games artstyle.

im pretty sure ive mostly been buying ugc items now and not roblox made also i feel like early ugc wasnt as diverse and thus some people were not really interested in the ugcs available and i agree its easy to make certain types of ugc items just make one then just duplicate it and change the color or just download a model off the internet im sure atleast one person did it lastly for me i dont care about item descriptions but only care if its a good item

Complaining that UGC is bad because they items are cheaper and allow people with lower income (Or who don't want to spend as much money on a virtual game) to buy the accessories they want and create the kind of avatar they like without breaking the bank is peak rich-kid bullshit.
